Were the Mongols the most overpowered people in history?

Also Mongols thread.

Mongol OPness was matched by the stupidity of their enemies. Genghis Khan invaded Iran and Anatolia almost by mistake.

It does amaze me how organised their army was though. It could be argued that their military system was what influenced the later European one, through the Ottoman system in the 1500s.

That, and also blind chance. When the Mongols won so many battles, they naturally struck fear into potential enemies who thought the Mongols were invincible (the same thing happened with their descendant, Timur).

They also employed very dirty and unconventional tactics. Upon encountering a Georgian army, for instance, they carried a cross. The Georgians correspondingly thought they were the army of Prester John, and in their naivete were slaughtered. They also did shit like diverting rivers to flood forts and towns near streams.

We were talking about highly developed civilisations they were attacking, after all, who had highly developed ideas of what warfare and treatment was 'right'. The Mongols, as complete barbarians, could manipulate that.

They could also gain the support of marginalised minority groups, since they had religious 'tolerance' which was in practice only realpolitik.

If you want some very good primary sources on Mongolian tactics and culture, you can read Plano de Carpini's 'History of the Mongols' and William of Rubruck's personal account of his narrative to Karakorum. Both were highly articulate and perceptive Franciscans who traveled to the Mongols for different reasons, and allow us to explain a lot about how the Mongols conquered and why they did so.

Another point is also the provess of an individual warrior.

A mongolian warrior used a horse and bow from pre-teen years and used them every day to actually sustain his way of life. Being mounted archers was literally their way of life.

Meanwhile, an average chinese or middle eastern soldier was a peasant who probably only held a spear for his first time mere months/weeks before a battle.

Honestly, who was the best US president, solely looking at what their accomplishments during the presidency?

How does Obama stand up to the rest of them?

Ike.

Nixon was better than he's rated as, his actions in international relations were some of the best any president ever managed. But yeah Watergate kind of fucked it all up and rightly so.

I'm sure like me, many of you have families who laugh or outright mock you for enjoying history and learning about the past. For example, this just happened to me

>Sitting in lounge reading a book about Nazi Germany
>Father walks in
>Starts questioning me
>''Son, why are you reading about things that already happened?''
>look him in the eyes, tell him that people who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it
>he laughs and says ''Oh, are you reading about how Hitler couldn't get a girlfriend to try and avoid his mistakes? It isnt working'' then laughs again
>literally too stupid to realise Hitler had a girlfriend
>shits out a smug grin and walks off

This is how things are for me pretty much every day. If I try to watch a historical documentary on television for example I am made to instantly turn it off because they don't want to watch it.

It seems like a real problem to me. My family have no historical knowledge. The last time we got Indian food I tried to make my sister laugh by playing rule Britannia on my laptop and taking her food away as a joke about the famines during the British Empire and nobody laughed. I don't understand why people are so willingly ignorant of history. It is fucking disgusting.

Your family's a bunch of plebs, disregard them, acquire knowledge.

>playing rule Britannia on my laptop and taking her food away as a joke about the famines during the British Empire
10/10 banter
>>
>How do we stop people dismissing history as 'worthless'?
We don't. We trick them into repeating it for personal gain.

Serious question. My girlfriend got in an argument with me, saying that the church's existence has been an overall net negative. I think that isn't quite right, but she cites that the church made people pay to go to heaven, has hindered, and still hinders the progression of science and technology, and uses its wealth to collect artwork and build fancy cathedrals. How would you argue against this?

Please be nice.

We're quite lucky a bunch of silly christian monks decided to try and save all they did during the dark ages. At least someone was thinking about the future, and not just grabbing as much Roman land as possible.

Not a book, but extremely useful: http://www.southeastasianarchaeology.com/

It's mostly just a list of news pieces, but you can find some really useful stuff on there, like links to websites.

Sorry I can't recommend any books though.

Do you want any specific information or are you just looking for inspiration?

Hidden or just put away? They cant display everything. So if they had large skeletons on display for a hundred years, they might put them away to make room for something else.
