Where did the notion that Democracy is something to strive for come from?

Neither the Declaration of Independence nor the Constitution mention the word "democracy", not even once. The founding fathers always wanted a representative republic.

Daily reminder the only reason Mendel became a friar was because he was unable to financially support his educational aspirations and he realized if he became a clergy-member he could get free education.

>"[Mendel] became a friar because it enabled him to obtain an education without having to pay for it himself"

He was never a particularly religiously-inclined person, and in his capacity as priest mostly dedicated himself to the administration of the monastery and trying to obtain academic degrees/positions.

A bunch of Beys and Emirs who nominally were under the Ottomen but largely did their own thing.

Also they weren't "pirates." That's Euro-talk. They were actual state entities. You know how it was fair game for cunts to raid Africans and get some of them as slaves? Berber States applied that to Europeans as well

Frankly, Renaissance and Enlightenment Mediterranean piracy would make for a pretty sick setting for a game like Sid Meier's Pirates!

Empire is not a government system, although USSR was an empire. As far as monarchy goes, sort of. Soviet Union was indeed a case of traditional authority in a non-monarchic country.

How could the Allies fuck up so badly?
It's almost unimaginable how one-sided the Battle of France was when two sides were pretty much evenly matched on paper.

France was using WW1 technology and tactics. Simple.
>>
>>972330
France did want to entrench the northern border as well, but the Belgians began bitching about how it would isolate them from their ally France, which they ditched when it was to late to lengthen the Magionet line that much.
The Belgians should just have realized their fate is to get invaded either by Germans heading towards France or Frenchmen heading at Germany.
>WW1 technology
That's not true.
>>
>>972330
Maybe the tactics were erroneous for too much reliance on the WW1 experiences but the technology was most definitely not on the level of the previous war. Although they were still far behind the 1944/1945 levels, I'll give you that.

Part 4 The Golden Age

The unprecedented period of stability and economic growth spread throughout Gupta Empire its old Kushan and Saka foes in the north began to crumble and their facade of a united nation could only be maintained for so long as the collapsed Saka nation and the collapsing Kushan were suddenly beset by the erstwhile allied nomadic tribes that inhabited the north and west of their respective lands and this unrest led to a number of tribes to cause instability and conflict to rage throughout the borders of the Gupta Empire.

Raids began increasingly frequent as tribes began to migrate toward the propering lands of central india, into the heart of the Gupta Empire. Seeing the obvious danger that was the migration Emperor Chandragupta II Vikramaditya once more gathered his vast armies now numbered at half a million men and tens of thousands of horsemen with thousands of elephants set about to counter these raids.

What followed was a series of wars that saw the nomads and old kingdoms of the Saka completely disintegrate as the massive forces under Vikramaditya began to destroy the various bands of nomadic tribes that faced him, the primary reason for the defeat of the swift cavalry of the nomads may have been the effective use of foot archers defended by armoured infantry.

The archers are said to have outranged the enemy horse archers and raiders and were shot down before they could get in range, their cavalry was met with Guptas own horsemen armoured like the Kushan Noble they had fought, and hundreds of charging armoured elephants to boot simply shattered any hope of victory, the combined arms and tactics found in the ancient military manual named the Siva-Dhanur-Veda (Knowledge of Weapons) were followed during this period and produced enormously advantageous strategic results, local tribes and chieftans flocked to the Gupta banner and the borders of the Empire stretched further westward past the Indus and north toward Afghanistan...

This was soon followed by a general retreat by the nomadic forces and being the war hungry Emperor like his father Vikramaditya pursued them into their homelands.

According to one of his coutiers named as the infamous Kalidasa claims in his 4th century text the Raghu Vamsa that Vikramaditya had conquered some 21 kingdoms in this manner and set about northward and conquered the Kambojas, Parasikas, Huna tribes gathering in western and northern Amu Darya(Oxus) Valleys.

Another source called The Brihatkathamanjari( Bree-Hath-Kathaa-Munn-jaree) authored by Kshmendra(shea-men-drah) stated Charkavartin(Emperor) Vikramaditya had "unburdened the sacred earth of the Barbarians like the Sakas(Scythians), Mlecchas(Pagans), Kambojas(Steppe Nomads), Yavanas(Indo-Greeks), Tusharas(Tocharians), Parasikas(Indo Kushans), Hunas(yeuzhi), etc. by annihilating these sinful Mlecchas completely".

This led to a sort of Pax-Imperium situation were all the foes were defeated in the north and the south was secured by matrimonial and alliance while the east submitted to peace treaties and trade. The Gupta Empire flourished ever greater as scholars from china and further afield travelled to study Buddhism and Jain temples were being built as art and literature once more took precedence over warfare.

It was around this time 399-401 AD that Faxian, an ancient chinese buddhist scholar arrived in india and left the accounts of his journey to india which was previously mentioned >>967141 and according to him there was an absence of capital punishment, the lack of a poll-tax and land tax and people did not eat onions, garlic, meat, or wine.

Why has nobody ever refuted Nozick's critique of the income tax?

Oh of course: because he was right.

Those who earn the most money owe the least to society since they already give more than anybody else through their voluntary economic activity. Unemployed hippies and NEETs should be put into productive slavery before taxes are ever levied.

Those who earn the most money benefit most from the rule of law, and thus owe the most back for its existence.

>Those who earn the most money owe the least to society since they already give more than anybody else through their voluntary economic activity

Sorry to break up your hero-worship but people in charge of corporations are just as easily replaceable as people in charge of government. Should we make sure a POTUS always leaves office with at least a few tens of billions for his services? Don't be an idiot. This is pointless moralizing and has nothing to do with a discussion of rational economics.

Law is talked about so little on /his/. Let's change that.

a) Where are you studying?
b? Are you enjoying it?
c) What is your favourite area of law?
d) The area of law you have had the most trouble comprehending?
e) The area of law most commonly misunderstood by laymen?
f) Who is your favourite judge?

I have to go with my man, Lord Denning for the last one. Great legal mind; decided to be Master of the Roll instead of the more prestigious but less involved House of Lords. Here he harassed the judgments of the House of Lords, favouring more equitable and sensible law, which earned him the nickname "The People's Judge".

Are the poor not empowered by enforcement of a contract they entered into with a multinational company? The claimant/plaintiff developing a complex area of law might be rich and powerful -- for they are the parties who have the financial means to further their legal argument to the highest level -- but the law developed protects everyone.
