Who told this guy he should have that haircut?
>>

Definitely Finnish, they'll probably never fully recover from the Hyperwar.
>>
The Greeks of today are barely Plato's Greeks. Mesopotamians have a good excuse, being overrun by Mongols and then dominated by Turks. Koreans were never formerly glorious.

So it's clearly the Latins or Egyptians. Egypt has fallen lower on an absolute scale, but there is clearly a greater gap between the greatness of Rome and the greatness of Italy than there is of the greatness of Egypt now and 2000 years ago.

So, Rome/Latins.

What can /his/ tell me about this man? Was it true that he was a Neocon? I never got the sense that he ever arrived at a solid political, or even philosophical position apart from "esotericism is pretty neat niggas"

Your instinct I agree with, having read most of Strauss's published writings, but also the transcripts of his lectures. My suspicion is that he's a Platonic skeptic, i.e., he thinks knowledge of the whole is improbable if not impossible, and that the fundamental questions are more knowable than the solutions and answers. This also means that politics is a bracketed subject, with respect to the question "What should be done?", since all that's maybe evident are the worst abuses and dangers.

Neo-con? No, though a few of his students probably were. The bigger influence on the neo-cons was Albert Wohlstetter, who also worked at Chicago, and while both of these men taught Paul Wolfowitz, it's the latter who really captured his attention and helped mold him.

The "Straussians" don't really agree with each other about how to take Strauss, besides that he's enigmatic, that his emphasis on close reading is important, and that the issues he pointed to (e.g., the Theological-Political Problem) are somehow the most basic issues of philosophy. Beyond that, no one can agree on whether, for example, he wrote esoterically himself or not.

Some entertaining polemics by his students aimed at Shadia Drury and Anne Norton on their books associating Strauss with Neo-Conservatism:

Are Heidegger and Strauss the most beautiful (in a tragic, pitiful sense) instances of cognitive dissonance philosophy, in response to Nietzsche?

I have a few questions about Christianity. Who were the wives of Adam & Eve's sons, Cain, Abel and Seth? Were the sibling marriages allowed back then or I'm dumb?

Adam and Eve had about 50 children in the end, they were genetically perfect so the usual danger of inbreeding wasn't there. Sibling relations were allowed out of necessity

It doesn't really matter since Genesis isn't supposed to be a literal historical account

Abuse as in taking advantage of them economically and giving them no rights or voice in a legal setting.

I'm glad that you like.Answer my question now!

This isn't my area of expertise, so I would appreciate some insight? I know about the colonial independence struggles, but it seems to me that the decline of it happened well before that, and I'd like to know what precipitated that.

They invested all their gold into pretty buildings and wars instead of building up their own production, getting an economy as diverse as the one of Russia.

So, they just sort of sat on their empire instead of using it to get ahead of the other European powers?
>>

The Dutch Rebelling caused a lot of their colonies to rebel and they also blew far too much money in that war. They lost a war with the French who took a lot of their colonies too. Their empire was too outstretched to maintain on the limited funds that they had. France and UK overtook them.

congratulations! you drew the short straw and now you're being conscripted into World War II to fight for your country.

your family are very proud. all you have to do is fill out a simple form to select which area of the armed forces you prefer. they currently need recruits for several different and fulfilling positions. it's casually mentioned in the fine print that if you refuse to complete the paperwork you'll be shot in the town square the following morning.

do you choose:
>army (paratrooper)
>army (tank corps)
>marines (flamethrower infantry)
>navy (submarine crew)
>air force (bomber crew)

Can we talk about these fucking things for a minute.

They were built around 2600 BCE. Most people just look at that and think "Yeah that's a really fucking old date, like with Cleopatra and shit".

No, 2600BCE is so long ago that it's barely half a millennia after the dawn of civilisation. The life of Jesus is not even HALF WAY between the current date and when the pyramids were built. Modern humans hadn't even reached the America's and these things were already built. They are Earth-shatteringly old.

So why did they make them? In Europe and in most of the world, people were just hunter-gatherers with no signs of civilisation. But in the desert, a group of people almost 5000 years ago decided to pile some rocks together.

WHy did they do it?

When the Nile floods it leaves clods of slit. When a seed is simply placed in these clods of silt it grows very well. This is how agriculture initially worked on the Nile and this is how they saw the source of all life. All life came from similar mounds of silt. When they wanted someone to go to the afterlife they created mounds to bury them in, to let the afterlife bloom.

The pharaohs supposedly were supposed to become gods upon death. Once gods they could help the people of Egypt, mainly by controlling the Nile's flooding so it didn't kill thousands of people. The great pyramids of Giza were therefore really really stupid attempts at damming the Nile.

It kind of makes me proud though that the Pyramids weren't simply monuments to the selfishness of singular men created by slaves but were instead the result of communities banning together to make the world a better place for themselves.
