A question to atheists. Most atheist hold an extremely materialistic view of the mind, that it's entire thought process is performed by the physical brain operating according to predictable, arguably deterministic mechanics. There is a pattern and order to thinking. We also know that the subconscious and instincts are inseperatly from the conscious mind and constantly exerting influence.

So why deny spirituality? Doctor Jung believed systems of spirituality and religion were essential to keeping the brain operating, to satisfy the subconscious's craving for symbols and myth. He also beleived when the mind is deprived of it's necessary diet of myths than it creates or seeks new ones. Since myth and spirtuality has been a part of the human condition for so many thousands of years is it really so hard to believe the brain would evolve to crave them. Religious artifacts are found among the earliest humans. What's so hard to believe that biological determinism has us respond to mother goddesses and animal spirits?

I personally think the public's increasing interest with fantasy and super hero media is related to the decline in spirituality.

I am genuinely curious as to how Catholics respond to Paul's letter to the Romans, specifically this section:

What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! 15 For he says to Moses,

“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,
and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”
16 It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy. 17 For Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” 18 Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.

I understand that Paul is not Christ, and therefore just because Paul says something, it's not necessarily 100 percent canonical... but surely one of the most influential christian writers ever should be taken at face value when he denounces faith through good works?

I respect the catholic church, even as a Lutheran, and I'm not trying to do 'smugman.jpg'. This is a genuine question, and I'd genuinely like to know what catholics on /his/ think.

Are the masses really being controlled by things such as movies, television, music,ect, or is this idea over exaggerated by people who project their self superiority on others as stupid sheep who cannot think for themselves. Is there really a hidden agenda being fed to the masses through, or is it just a expression of the times they where made in? Of course there can be both but it seems to me that it is blown out of proportion. Is there any evidence behind these theories?

>The Bosnian Indiana Jones has come into contact with a giant stone sphere. Like the famous movie counterpart, this large object is also bringing excitement along with it. The stone sphere discovered in mid-March, 2016 in Bosnia may be the largest of its kind in the world, however there is much debate if the feature is man-made or natural. The stone ball was discovered in a forest in Podubravlje and has a radius of between 1.2 – 1.5 meters (3.9-4.9 ft.) Preliminary tests suggest that it could weigh over 30 tons, making it the most massive stone sphere in Europe.

"The Starving Time" refers to a period in American history when folk hero John Smith (of Pocahontas fame) abandoned his post in Jamestown, VA to return to the British Isles- because he was the captain and he wanted to. Upon returning months later, he found his camp in turmoil. Without proper leadership his crew had failed to competently ration their foodstuffs and resorted to stealing from Indigenous tribes, which retaliated- so they ate dogs. When the dogs ran out, children were used for sustenance. The crew was becoming desparate when he finally returned, but it can be assumed they would have begun to cannibalize themselves to the last man.
This is exactly why we can't look to authority figures to solve our problems. We must learn to solve issues on our own terms, in our own way, lest we perpetuate the ignorance that runs rampant in society. If all the grocery stores were looted clean, could you grow your own crops? Could you competently defend these crops from wildlife and scavengers? How? Can you build a fence? Properly maintain and utilize a weapon of any kind- not just guns?
There are people out there who care about this kind of thing, and this is for them. If you don't care or don't think the citizens of Earth are susceptible to societal collapse, you're lying to yourself, blinded by pride. Only those who are open with themselves and their minds can truly be open and productive in any society.

Just thinking about being in one of these ships, stuck just standing there all day in the dark, skeleton thin, elbow-to-elbow with hundreds of naked prisoners, in that sweltering heat, surrounded by the dead, everyone yelling and crying... I dunno, it just creeps me out.
