What made Judaism so unique as a religion? They have plenty in common with contemporary religions, sure (animal sacrifice, sacred priesthood, ornate worship, etc.), but I mean in the extremely unique factors. Such as absolute animosity toward worship of any god but YHWH and absolute animosity toward his depiction. Even more strange, when religion was generally just a set of folk beliefs and realized in a few rituals, Judaism was not based on folk rituals, it was highly centralized with just *one* temple for the whole nation. Even more unusual, it was heavily involved in everyday life, your entire life was supposed to be centered around the religion and meditating on its guidelines for living life (this is more common in Asian religions, but certainly not among contemporary semetic or European religions). It's incredibly formal and theologically distinct (by the former, I mean very formal codes for everyday life, and by the latter, I mean explicitly saying the universe was created by a *god* and not always existing or coming out of chaos of its own accord, and that this god is beyond all the universe, and that the things of the universe like starts and earth and sea and sun are just objects that were created).

It's been theorized that Judaism came from an older pantheistic religion, and they broke off. It might be that the older religion just wound up crumbling to.

What does /his/ think of welfare? Is it needed? Does it promote laziness and dependence? Should it be scrapped?

I was reading a news article earlier today about two teenagers who receive welfare here (Australia) and were happy to not work, but are apparently at risk of getting their benefits cut off now as result of government intervention. Whilst this is a poor example, at the same time, welfare does have it uses in helping people through difficult times.

So, what does /his/ think?

I've seen this spouted a few times, and I'm going to give my perspective. "Judaism" today mostly just means "Phariseeism," so yes, Christianity is at odds with Jews if by that you mean Pharisees. But there is no racial issue, it's not a form of racism.

You can see the Orthodox understanding here and why we have issues with Phariseeism, but not Jews as a race (start at 39 minutes)
http://orthodoxbiblestudy.info/st-john-chrysostom-anti-semite/

We aren't going to change our Liturgy just because the ADL urges us to, even if Catholics have:
http://archive.adl.org/presrele/chjew_31/5069_31.html#.V-C3p_krJmM

>Even more inadmissible, from my point of view, is the correction of liturgical texts in line with contemporary norms. Relatively recently the Roman Catholic Church decided to remove the so-called 'antisemitic' texts from the service of Holy Friday.

Constantine, shut up or at least put your trip back on so we can filter you. Your obvious Orthodox shilling is as stupid as ever.

Your daily reminder that the historical Jesus almost certainly WAS a Pharisee, and that the "Pharisees" of the New Testament hold an awful lot of Sadducee beliefs, which of course your pocket "experts" like Paul completely fail to catch up on, demonstrating that misunderstanding of the religion it supposedly stems from was lacking pretty much from Day 1, and that God apparently never thought to inform his church (or himself) about these things.

why didn't nationalist Spain join the axis during world war 2?
14 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1717019
Because they were film-flammy in 1940 which was the only year that the Axis actually looked likely to win.

By 1941 it was clear that if they joined in the side of the Axis they'd just get their shit kicked in too. Besides they were still recovering from the Civil War
>>

Also, there was no real gains to hope for, because they had just fought a hard earned victory to hold on to their tiny fucking colony.

i don't get why people rate da vinci higher than Michelangelo. or even Raphael for that matter
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1716969
Michalangelo wouldn't stop fooling around, and Raphael was an asshole.
>>
there was another thread yesterday with the ranking raphael > michelangelo > da vinci which is 100% accurate. not sure where i would put donatello -- probably between michelangelo and da vinci

it probably depends on how many works by each artist a person can name
>>
Da Vinci's not the superior man, but he's definitely the most renown, seeing that his work is the easiest to identify.

>mona lisa
>the last supper
>vitruvian man
>numerous sketches depicting mechanical contraptions, anatomical diagrams, and breathtaking artwork

Michelangelo may have painted a number of influential pieces, but unless you bother to do any research, most people don't readily associate him with his creations. "David" is known as just "the statue of the guy with the small penis" to a lot of people, for example, and the same can be said for the rest of those men.

Also, Da Vinci was largely seen as a polymath whose artistic abilities were one of many. His contemporaries are seen as artists first, and everything else second, so they're not viewed as impressive.

Why was slavery ever allowed? Wasn't it obvious that it was a violation of the Constitution?
31 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
They didn't consider blacks to be people, so no
>>
Well we had slaves before the constitution was written so like a lot of things it got grandfathered in. The thing is, slavery was opposed on a moral stance far more than a legal one.
>>
Southern plantation owners considered it a sort of romanticised neo feudalism, and argued they treated their slaves better than the industrialists in the north treated their sweatshop employees.

What is enlightenment?
22 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
You know how no matter how introspective and self-evaluative you are, there's always a little bit beyond your grasp that you wont admit you find detestable about yourself? Enlightenment is finding that bit, admitting it to yourself, and fixing it.
>>
>>1716695
fuck that, enlightenment is peace in understanding, and accepting what you can`t. not necessarily implying you stop trying
>>
Realizing that there is nothing to realize. Usually this realization is preceded by a long wild goose chase involving trying a million different things to end your suffering and finally you can start living the life you've always dreamed of.

Eventually (hopefully) you will realize that you're going to die, like everything. You'll realize that you're one with the universe, and not in some spiritual new-age way. You'll realize it's just a physical reality. You're part of the universe like the cells are part of your body. The distinction between you and everything else doesn't need to be made. You'll realize many more profound truths on the way, and it will amuse you, and it will be fun to think about. You'll learn a lot, and eventually you'll get back to where you started, and that's enlightenment.
