Why doesn't Apple license macOS to other PC manufacturers? They could have more marketshare than Microsoft with Windows since it's a much better OS.

Why don't they do it? Why force people to make Hackintoshes?
12 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
because they would have to support a broader range of hardware, which would reduce the development rate of the os and effectively make it non competitive against microsoft
>>
>>59526617
would ruin the "everything works"-philosophy from pre-intel-times.
>>
Because macOS requires strict hardware,
and with marketshare you are mainly looking at medium to small level businesses (over 80% of the economy) who depend on mixing old and new hardware where they can or buying cheap as shit to minimize amortization.
Cheaper than Apple would allow them, and more easy to repair than Apple would allow them.

There's probably only 1 way that would work though, and it's if all business suddenly took up virtualization from a standardized mainframe (supported by Apple) in the building as the main computer driver, thus sending OS instances to employee monitors. Tough luck on that though.

Why aren't all new rips encoded in VP9? It's free as in FOSS and it's hardware accelerated on most devices.

It's a viable alternative to h265.

Why the fuck are rips always in x264 or x265? I've never seen a rip of a decent show or film in VP9 but there is no reason why people shouldn't use it.
27 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
x264 and x265 is free as in FOSS as well. Patent law means jack shit for end users.
>>
Because they compress better and are more widely supported by sites and companies that create videos that people actually care about.
>>
>>59526589
VP9 is basically dead. It's okay to use in the meantime but AV1 a FOSS codec with actual industry backing is coming soon.

I know /g is shilling thinkpads, and they look great, but browsing and checking 2nd hand stores, elitebooks seem to have a better bang for the buck (although the seem less well built)
I also prefer fully matte screens, and newer Thinkpads tend, imho, to be on the glossier side of the matte spectrum.
R Thinkpads an overpriced meme, or are they worth it?
Thoughts, /g? (before i take the plunge)

Hey /g/

I'm currently using the trial version of RubyMine and I love it, it's very complete and have a lot of functionalities.
It doesn't just support Ruby (so Ruby on Rails) but also javascript backend (Node) and front-end frameworks and libraries (React, Angular (JS & 2/4). It's nice for webdev.

But it's 200€ a year. So i'm searching a new one.

What ide are you using for webdev? why?

It's not an IDE but I use Visual Studio Code. It has a ton of plugins so you can make it do whatever you need to.

>>59526560
I second this.
>>
>>59526145

can anyone explain what the fuck is going on in this pic? this is web development...?
