I ended up going with the lower option, here is the final plan sheet. I generated it using CBdesigner. In the plan, I was going to do 1.75" thick, however at the last minute I changed it to 1.625" and after all of the processing, 1.5".

I got it all cut down on a table saw, they are all ~.75"x.75". I say approx because it is a carpenter saw and even with extensive setup work it still wasnt perfect. Anyways, here is it all laid up prior to gluing.

Chain and come-along are your friends.

Cut as low to the ground as possible to avoid having Mr. Tree hop the base and cleave your leg off.

It's just a basic PCB. There are several ways to make them, but you could google "toner transfer" and "photographic method pcb" for the starters.

It's a regular copper clad board and it looks like the circuit was drawn on with a permanent marker then etched and then tinned to make it silver.

Markers are shit and rarely work well, I've had much better results with toner transfer.

Is the - (or GND) of your battery connected to the GND on your Arduino?

Check if you used the same GND with the arduino and the power-supply in the switched circuit.
Have you connected Drain, Source and Gate correctly?

chromed-looking armor on plastic is always a pain. Chrome paint usually can't do any better than shiny, even with a massive amount of prep and work, and it enhances every single possible flaw and structural wrinkle. Working from perfect vac casts the best bet might be vacuum metalizing or chroming, maybe skinning the parts in some kind of mylar-like material and bonding it smoothly.

A few years back when I played with making songs, I used Cakewalk Home Studio and it had everything for recording mixing down separate tracks of audio and MIDI.
You could use audio loops with it but it was not real easy to do.

If you want to make techno/loop music, then there is programs targeted at that--Fruityloops (now FL Studio) is a bigger one.

Plus there is freeware/Linux programs too. But they are usually pretty shit compared to the ones you pay for.

As I saw it, PCs are great for mixing down but aren't real good at the actual "recording" part. You can easily spend $2000+ trying to build a PC that has the input ports you want, runs totally silent AND has no lag issues when recording.
Nowadays you can just go spend $300-$400 and get a portable multitrack recorder (flash or hard drive-based) and it is way easier to use, is portable, comes with phantom power XLR ports and has no noise or lag problems at all. You just gotta copy the recorded files onto your PC for mixing down and adding effects.

So I'm seeing a couple of really good instruction sets for building your own printer, but I'm wondering how the quality is to something made professionally.

All of the test prints I've seen have very obvious imperfections. This isn't a huge problem because I figure you could always go and sand stuff down a bit, but I also wonder how strong the material is in comparison to traditionally manufactured plastic.

A 3d printer would be very convenient for making custom robotics parts but I want to make sure that it will hold up to a certain level of quality and stability.
Are diy 3d printers good enough?
Are 3d printers in general enough to create relatively solid plastics?
Should I just look somewhere else?

Every plastic part in the picture you posted was 3d printed and they can withstand the forces required of a 4-axis robot (the printer). If printed on the printer in the picture, you can DIY something similar; I have an all leadscrew reprap.

Boiler and turbine maintenance is not very DIY. There's too much knowledge and tooling to half ass it, and shit explodes big.

Maybe make a coal slurry and feed it to a diesel engine tuned for it.

How are you gonna source coal? Solar and wind are good for OTG because it's always shining down or blowing through.

Like another anon said it might not be cost effective or easy to source coal. Might be better with a sterling engine that will run off any kind of fuel. Bio, wood, coal, charcoal etc. Probably not very efficient though.

Could always pull out a diesel engine from a car or truck and repurpose it as a diesel generator.

From the ones I've handled, yes. You would need some kind of rack arrangement that would move up and down, and then the actuator just does the lifting.

loudness depends. The motors only run when they are moving. None of them move very fast.

The smallest and cheapest ones they sell are usually takeouts or surplus from car power seat actuators, or car power window actuators.

These things are just a geared down DC motor that drives a worm drive that extends and retracts a rack unit.
They also have a limit or reed switch at each end of it's stroke to disconnect the supply to the motor.
Also bear in mind that you reverse the direction by the polarity of the DC voltage applied to the motor.
