Ok for a Christmas gift I decided to make a butcher block. I am just getting into woodworking, and this is my first project using hardwood.

Anyways, I got some hard maple and walnut;

Maple:
>1x - 3"x24"x.75"
>3x - 5"x48"x.75"

Walnut:
>1x - 3"x48"x.75"

I then came up with two different designs.

I ended up going with the lower option, here is the final plan sheet. I generated it using CBdesigner. In the plan, I was going to do 1.75" thick, however at the last minute I changed it to 1.625" and after all of the processing, 1.5".

I got it all cut down on a table saw, they are all ~.75"x.75". I say approx because it is a carpenter saw and even with extensive setup work it still wasnt perfect. Anyways, here is it all laid up prior to gluing.

Here it is glued. I am using Titebond 2, since is is water resistant and FDA approved for indirect food contact. All of my cauls are backed with painters tape so I dont end up having to chip them up.

Mistakes were made.
>I really needed 1 more pipeclamp, and one more set of cauls towards the left end. There was uneven pressure and some I ended up having to plane off a lot of wood to clean it up.
>I also was light on the glue. I got worried it would dry on me and I rushed it.

I was worried about the planer ripping up the glue so I first hit the high spots with a belt sander. I am a total amateur with it, and at the ends I let it pull down a little. It then went through the planer, and the edges were cleaned up on a joiner.

Next, I sliced it into 1.625" sections. Because of the glue starved joints I mentioned earlier, Several fell apart. I reglued and clamped them up (pic related)

Here it is all lined up. I fine tuned the order to make the gaps I made on the ends with the belt sander.

I finalized the order and glued. This time I made sure to use a TON of glue. It made one hell of a mess but whatever.

I used the dust collected from the belt sander and some glue to make some filler, but it came out darker than expected. Kind of a bummer but in any case it works.

Here it is sanded. I only did a fast rough sand with 80 grit on a random orbital sander. Mainly to level it. I tried using the planer but it sniped it pretty bad.

Next the edges were cleaned up on the table saw. Then, I went ahead and rounded over the edges. The bottom has a .125" and the top a .25". It was then sanded with 80, then 150, with the orbital sander; and finally with 240 by hand.

Poured down some mineral oil. Look how dark it makes the walnut. What a beautiful change.

And here it is after the first coat. I am going to do one or two more and then wrap it up. I am really cutting it close but I think I can have it done by friday.

Thanks for reading, let me know what you think.

10/10 work man. Was thinking about trying some butcher block, but you definitely set that bar in a high point.

Crazy clear pictures and write up as well. Would let OP fuck me without a condom/10

>>919478
Thank you. Everytime I look at it I only see the flaws.

Here's what's running through my head:
>edges not lined up with pattern
>not truly 12"x18"
>edge parts <.75"
>not all blocks are .75"x.75" from planing down the first board
>roundovers are not perfect
>chipout on one of the short ends on the walnut from the router
>tiny gaps on ends
>wood filler is a terrible match and has some big pores

lol I need to chill.

>>919482
Thank you.

>>919483
Woodworker and luthier here.

I agree with you, don't beat yourself up over the mistakes.

Yes, mistakes were made, it happens. And you had the right idea for the fix.

But, did you learn from the mistakes? From what I can tell it looks like you never fully planed out the dip in the end you made with the belt sander, that's why you had to make filler. You live and you learn, like you said this is your first project with hardwoods and you did damned well. Just a tip for next time, scribble all over that sumbitch with pencil before you send it through the planer, when the pencil is gone you're flat. Then check with a quality straight edge.

In the end, nice work man. Welcome to the fun world of woodworking!
>>
>>919483
Oh and as for the router... Super light passes man. Especially since you're routing end grain it should take about 4 passes to round the edge. Make a pass, lower the bit a little, then start over and repeat until you're at the depth you need to make the round over.
Using a routing table is a huge help as well.

Also titebond II sucks for making filler putty as it always comes out darker. I think titebond original is okay for that or any white wood glue. But, they aren't fda approved and all that.

Hope I'm being helpful and not coming off as pretentious or anything, I've had a few beers lol

Good Work OP!!!
>>
I'm sure hoping your mineral oil was Food-Safe, OP
>>
Very cool OP
>>
I have seen some butcher boards that are wrapped on the outer edge with metal of some sort. I saw stainless steel, but I feel like bronze would look nice with this.
Overall excellent work for your first time OP
>>
>>919459
This is awesome man. I assumed a typical diy thread of I want to do this, oh wait it's harder than I thought. It actually turned out nicely too. Some mistakes were made, but you moved forward in the right direction and made it work. You won't make those mistakes again I bet, that's the crucial part of trying anything.

Fantastic. Though what is that dark discoloration between segments on the left side? Is it natural grain or extra glue?

It was, I got it in the pharmacy at walmart. It's sold as 'Intestinal Lubricant'

>>919609
I actually wanted to do an edge with the small piece of maple, on the outside, and a thin strip of walnut on the inside; all edges joined with box joints. I gave up on that plan because I realized it was beyond me for this. I will be trying to learn how to make fancy joints soon. This plan is pic related.

>>919629
That would be the wood filler. It was like 90% maple and 10% walnut but it still ended up way too dark.
>>
>>919650
Ah I understand. Well have a Merry Christmas m8. You did a fine job. I made a chopping block back when I was a kid. Yours reminds me how much fun it would be to have a workshop again.
>>
>>919493
>>919494
I did use pencil markings to level it with the belt sander, but my issue is just with keeping it level. I didn't plane it all the way out. I wanted the pieces to by .75"x.75" on the top view, and had I finished planing off another .0625" it would have become very noticeable. Even now, the planed sides are off. I tried to hide it as much as possible but if you look hard its still noticeable.

As for the router, I used a router table. It was able to cut easily in one pass, but I went very slow. The chipout is from where I bumped it a little when I pivoted to the far side of the fence on the table.

As for the titebond 2, I figured that was the cause. I think there are other fda approved wood glues I'll look into other options next time around.

>Hope I'm being helpful and not coming off as pretentious or anything, I've had a few beers lol
Lol not at all, I appreciate the feedback. Merry Christmas.

obviously. /diy/ gifts are always better, especially when they aren't shit. merry christmas op
>>
>>919898
Damn, that looks awesome! Also, nice board ;)

But well done dude! These \diy\ gifts are always better than store bought ;) Happy holidays!
>>
>>919459
It's late now but for anyone looking for gifts do consider the personalised store-bought gifts.

I got a tie with matching handkerchief with my initials embroidered on it. Instantly much more appreciated (and now my favourite). I in turn gave my girlfriend a box she had seen that she liked but I engraved her name on the lid and my name and the occasion (Christmas '15) on the bottom.

As good solution for DIYers without large workshops.

what does that even mean.

His suggestion was rather than making a monogrammed jewelry box from scratch, buy a box from store or thrift shop and engrave yourself.
The qualitative difference of a diy gift is the small things that make it clear it was made for a particular person.
>>
>>921616
This! I'm not saying an engraved store bought box is better than a fully DIYd one. But if you don't have the tool it takes to make a nice box that engraving will still show that some extra thought and effort went into the gift (and it can be done with a Dremel instead of a shop with bandsaw, planer, etc. etc.).
