Hello this seemed like the best board to ask. Does anyone have any idea whether this would support a 20 gallon aquarium? It would just under 175lbs filled with water, gravel, and ornaments. There maybe another 10 - 20 lbs in the shelves themselves.

Considering it is almost fully solid pine, the only issue I would see would be the thinness of the legs (if somebody where to hit their shoe hard enough) which I could compensate for by placing some cross bracing on sides. Would that bracing even be necessary?

Does it come with a wood back or the cardboard?
If it is pressboard, ditch that and get a piece of 1/4 or so thick plywood glue and nail/screw that on the back instead.

Hey /diy/ done a google search for this shotgun like lighter I bought at a local gas station so I could have a smoke for later.
Unfortunately I tried to get this thing to work, but I don't know what I'm doing, and I'm hurting my fingers by attempting to get this fucking piece of shit to work...

If it uses a piezoelectric sparker is that not producing a spark? If it is gas fuelled then is gas issuing from the valve when you operate the mechanism? You'll be able to see escaping butane as a ripple in the air or smell it

Hi all,
I've recently gotten into a few projects that require the use of tools that I don't own, nor do I really have the proper space/safety equipment to set up (grinders, a welder, basic metalworking stuff). Would anyone here know if there is some sort of space that might have tools like this available for public renting/use? I've checked the local hackerspace (I live in Ottawa ,ON) but it caters mostly to electronics design rather than heavier stuff. I've also been using the machine shop at my university, but they're hesitant letting students use the welder and grinder, plus I'm working a 9 to 5 now, so I can't actually find time to use it. Buying the equipment to use myself is a no-go right now, as I've got no garage space, nor a lot of money .

I want to buy a book on vegetable/herb/fruit growing since its something I want to get into. Ideally it should be one huge tome full of everything I need but one introductory book + one advanced seems reasonable too.
I have tried googling some recommendations but have not found anything that I like, most books seem to be full of pictures but little useful information. Can anyone suggest anything?

I'm building shelves into a closet and wanted to find the studs. I found an old Stanley intellisensor 77-110 stud finder but it is not working so I opened it up and found the red and black wires were not connected. I tried to figure out where they go but no luck. Are there any electronic nerds out there to help me out? I have a soldering kit already
TLDR: where do I attach positive and negative wires?

Have you tried just a new battery? Flip the board over.

They look like they're for a speaker or more likely a buzzer - the bit that goes beep when you find a stud.
Check the casing, shit grade buzzers are usually glued or moulded into the plastic so that the wires rip off when someone pulls the thing open. Might be marked with polarity, probably wont be. Try it one way around then the other if it doesn't work.
Replace the battery.

What are some flooring options for a mobile home? I was thinking of laminate but I read online that because a mobile home never settles, it could become uneven and laminate could snap or break if you step on certain spots that may be humped or bowed in.
What about those laminate planks that mimic laminate/hardwood flooring? Anybody here have experience with mobile homes? I just bought one for $15K and it has some nasty carpet.

I have a bunch (like 50) LI-ION cells I tore out of defunct / damaged drill batteries (which I've been calling makita cells) and I'm wondering about testing them. I want to be able to graph their discharge cycle and record their true mAh.
First thought about this was have a constant current (or do I need a constant voltage?) load and use an arduino to record the voltage and time, and put it into a csv or something I could graph nicely

Does anyone know of a good, cheap battery discharge logger I can get off ebay (that preferably has usb for logs) ?

I'd go with the buying option. If I'm not mixing stuff with Li-Po, discharging this stuff yourself can be dangerous both to you and the battery. Go and buy something which has protection circuits built in, so that you can leave the thing to discharge and do whatever. I've seen many chargers/dischargers that warn you about leaving them unattended as they don't stop working by themselves and rather overcharge / overdischarge the cells.

Protection circuits can be bought from ebay or aliexpress.
I have a load of 18650s I've pulled from laptop batteries, if you're looking for a cheap and relaible battery tester I highly recommend the liitokala, I got one and it works fantastic.

To make a long story short, the bathroom floor in our house of 9 years is really fucked up and we need to replace it, my point of concern for now is on the toilet pipe ring (the dirty red ring, sorry i don't know much terminology) i need to know if this red ring around the pipe in the pic is still usable or if it would be smart to replace it.

I'm starting to paint devices that I will be using in moderate levels. That means this mouse and an Xbox One controller for my laptop(and in a month or two a computer case). I just want to know how many layers of clear coat should I use to improve durability(or whatever procedures should I do)?
The guys I see on videos on youtube just use one layer of clearcoat and I don't feel it will last long if I did only one. I also don't know how adding a bunch of layers would affect the paint job.
Thoughts?

How necessary is primer or that adhesion promoter if Im painting a plastic case ?
So far I have sandpaper rough enough to lightly "scratch" the gloss off, I have 800 grit and the paintI plan to use followed by clear coat.
Is this enough to do a good job on plastic or do I need that promoter/white paint primer with extra sheets of 1000-200 sandpaper?
Trying to keep this on a budget but I might end up using more than the twenty bucks used already...

I need to mount a gear to a motor with a D-shaft.
Where should I get gears like that for a reasonable price and low quantity? Most places I found want you to buy in bulk or want to charge $20 for a 0.5 inch diameter gear, which seems too high to me.

The only kinds of cheap mix & match gears are the tiny plastic injection-molded ones. All the others cost a lot of money--assuming you can even find someplace that will sell in small quantities.
If it is at all possible, switch your design to using cogs and roller chain. This is still a strong positive connection and is way cheaper than gears.

Litter boxes, cat facilities areas thread?
-how many cats share the box?
-What kind of box do you use?
-size?
-what kind of litter do you prefer?
-how often do you scoop the poop?
-how often do you completely replace the litter?
-what do you do to keep odors down? (aside from the obvious "keep it scooped out")
I'll start: When I first got my cat, I noticed she'd pee over the side of the box (it was a smaller box, not very deep) so after some research I decided to make a box that forced her to get IN the box (rather than "hover" on the edge of it). This has stopped the erratic peeing 100%! Also since the sides are tall, she's got something to scratch instead of ruining my walls!
I've tried many kinds of litter but my favorites are Arm& Hammer and Tidy cats (clumping). I've settled on the Tidy cats that comes in the 35lb bucket because it seems to provide the best bang for the buck. Clumps well, cost efficient, not terrible smelling.
I've got two cats, they have separate boxes. The box pictured is probably 18x30 inches (and quite deep). I usually fill it 3-4 inches of littler and scoop every 2-3 days.
the 2nd cat has a much smaller box and it tends to get soiled much quicker. I'm not sure if it's because there's 1/3 of the amount of litter or if it's something else. Although I use the same litter in his box, his pee doesn't clump near as well as hers does. I would mention that the cats have very similar diets.
Anyone else want to share their routine? What works, what doesn't?

I bought two pairs of boots online: One is supposed to be a 9W and the other one a 10. I'm normally a 9.5, they didn't have that size in stock.
The 10 is definitely too large, I can feel my foot move around too much. The 9W fits perfectly except when I walk in it the top part/welt starts creasing and digs into the top of my foot. Its a bit annoying when it does it, I can feel it on top of my foot every time the shoe flexes.
Should I try to stretch out the 9Ws until the vamp "flexes" more or opens up? Like I said the problem is that the vamp creases and digs into the top of my foot, almost at the base of my toes.
I never had either of those problems on my Red Wings 3507 in 9.5 (Red Wings store said I was a 9W or 9.5).
