how strong are shipping containers when they stand verticaly? how unstable would it be if you had two 40ft ones stacked on top of each other? because if it was relatively easy, you could make a super badass tower pretty cheap.

Hey /diy/. Need some help with a project. I have a small off grid solar system. No power on the property. A am a little strapped for cash, the problem i have is the battery is to large for the the solar array and its not getting a regular full charge. I ran a generator for 10 hours and used a dumb charger. It helped a lot and the battery has recovered somewhat. I can add another charge controller. The problem is thats fucking expensive. I need 120-130 amps going in an hour for 3 hours for a proper equalize stage. I cannot find a single source online of a high amp dumb charger thats that big. Highest i found was 55 amps i got at work and the shit burnt out in a day (returned it) and regulated chargers are designed for smaller standard cells like golf cart batteries and marine cells. The voltages are to low and they never fully charge let alone an equalize option. So i thought of an alternator. Same problem, they are regulated to low, but i found out i can use a rheostat and control the regulator, tricking it into thinking the voltage is lower than it is. Problem is I dont know a ton about them.
Will it still push out the current at 16 volts?
Is 16 volts hard on the alternator?
How do i control the amperage? I need constant current and constant voltage for a proper equalize. Thoughts?
Also most important, how large of an engine do i need to drive 120-130 amps? How large to that its not straining? I figure I will need a larger ALT since they don't put out a full rated amount till high speed. I don't want it screaming and hot.

bump, so far it looks like 100 amps is about what a 6.5 hp engine can drive. I'd like to drive it without making the engine scream though.

I want to user a junker car seat as an office chair. Plenty of guides and tutorials online, but none of them consider the center of mass of a car chair.

Should the mount be dead center of the car seat? Further back? I'd appreciate any input on this

>>
heh im doing the same chair

i would say, a little bit off center, close to the backrest, if you want to keep the hability to lean back a bit, if you dont want that and you want it point fixated, just use a plate and bolt it down on the middle

for my project, i am making the feet by myself with some angle iron, i want to make a standard 4 feet chair cause i want to make it "lazyboy" style, wich means, the hability to lean back...WAY back, and have a feet rest that also pops out as the backrest leans back

Are you going to install wheels on it?
Do you know how much your seat weighs?

yes i will, as soon i get another set, cause the ones i got are not mobile, they are fixed

as for the weight, the seat by itself doesnt weight much cause its totally stripped, no padding n shit, but, its also smaller than the one in your pic, my seat came out of a Fiat...BUT, i do have a larger seat like yours, first ill finish this smaller one to test and see what needs to be mod/change for the larger seat

So, is this a good idea to make as a plaything for children?

I wouldn't make anything a plaything for a kid underground a lot of crap that can happen if you don't know what you're doing and even just 1 thing went wrong.
>>
>>918850
No, not at all.

Instead get some culvert pipe and make a small underground bunker with it. Use lots of ventilation. Keep in mind that these are not water tight and will allow water into them. Spraying them with DIY truckbed liner spray on the outside is the best thing you can do to water proof them.
>>
No anon, the building of it doesn't involve and educate the children. Never just do something for a kid, try to involve them in the construction process, not only will it help their self esteem and actualization, but it will educate them and make them more self sufficient.

I suggest instead teaching them to dig viet cong styled hidey holes as well as how to construct man traps to get rid of anyone attempting to capture them.

Are there worse human beings on this earth than car mechanics and car dealers?

Seriously, I'm having so much trouble finding my first car due to everyone always trying to fucking scam me.

Fuck! Maybe you guys can help me, maybe not...fuck.

I'm poor, please halp.

there is an industry around this, but a lot of people don't even know about it. I think it's very strange.

They are called 'automobile locator services' or a 'car buying service'

Your bank or credit union might have someone they recommend. They will often pay the fees of the service if you get the loan with your bank.

I'm thinking about buying a house that's on a relatively steep slope. I'd like to make the front yard less steep by building up earth held in place by a retaining wall. Is that just crazy or is it feasible, especially with earth/sand/cement bags?
71 posts and 19 images submitted.
>>
>>916796
Retaining wall are best with poured concrete or stone/block/brick. Although, because they are ultra cheap, my state's road crews use wire fencing, gravel, and I-beams.

You really should use solid blocks/stones though.
>>
>>916801
so if done properly that could create a less steep slope that could be like a front yard?
>>
It is going to be $$$$$$

Often. You can find the cost of medium sized retaining wall coming close to and exceeding the cost of the house.

Need to fill this in somehow. The entire floor is fucked and needs to be replaced but the landlord is a cheap bastard. Really just need to fill this and many other holes in what looks like linoleum tile with shitty wood underneath flush with the rest of the floor. The area gets a lot of foot traffic so it will need to be durable.

Scrap up the damaged tiles and replace them. Self adhesive linoleum tiles are cheap. Cheaper still if you only need a few and ask the store for a box of leftovers on discount.

I'm wanting to make my spring form pan(similar to pictured) water tight as it leaks a bit when I use it in a water bath for my cheesecakes. So what would be a good thing to put on the removable spring bit that would make a good seal when its attached to the base and 'locked' in

aquariums use various products (silicones) that are safe for the fish. if its safe for them, its safe for you.

Only other way I can think of is drilling holes from the outside to meet up, then staking in a small ball bearing to seal the outside(as done for crankshaft oil passages), but I'm not sure if that'll get you what you need.

So I just saw these ( see image ) at my local Dollar Tree and bought four of them to be beaters. A dollar a piece seemed like a bargain for a cheap beater but I noticed the blades are not sharp at all. This also happens to be my first experience with owning a knife for every day carry and I'm wondering how to maintain the blades on them. They were dull right out of the box.

How do you sharpen your knives and keep the tools on your multi-tool working? If you were going to buy an expensive multi-tool which would you buy and why? I know these tools are not meant to replace a tool kit and I don't intend to use them that way but what sort of projects/in what situations would you use a multi-tool?

Very nice! I've heard wonderful things about Leatherman. I hope you enjoy it!

If you don't know when to use it, why buy 4?
Why buy 4 in the first place?
Anyhow, I only like to carry multitools on my keys, because I forget them everywhere. I use them when I don't need my toolbag to complete a repair at work. Mostly 2 Phillips to get to a control board.
Good for computers, as you only really need a screwdriver, pliers and a cutting edge.

As for what I'd buy, it doesn't matter. You'll be attracting the elitist faggits here in a few minutes who will tell you that unless you buy a hundred dollar leatherman, youre a worthless piece of shit. Personally, I buy whatever I see that hass what I need. I like lightweight ones that keep it to a minimum.
Protip: no one needs a fucking saw on a multitool. A serrated blade, maybe.

bought it from a flea market, the clock died, dont feel like throwing it away, should i send it to be repaired or should i turn it into a locket?
