Hello /diy/ I woke up the other day to see that 2 rows of tile on my kitchen floor have buckled and are raised up now. Two rows of 5 tiles and partial tiles against the dishwasher. Two full tiles and one partial have cracked as seen in pic related.

Is there a way I can just remove and replace the cracked ones and get the others to lay flat again? There is some shit on youtube about drilling holes in the grout and spraying some glue shit under the tiles but I don't know how I'd force them back flat on the floor again.

Any help is appreciated.

your dishwasher is leaking water and has caused the floor to lift up

How much of home electrical work do you actually need to call an electrician for?

Obviously for insurance and certification they should carry out everything except rewiring a plug, but it seems to me that things like replacing (existing) light switches and outlets (or in my case, installing a salt water chlorinator in my pool system) could be done by any moderately intelligent and pragmatic human.

Would they refuse to certify even a Grade A+ piece of work carried out by an enthusiastic home DIYer just because they missed out on the shekels? Seems like bullshit to me. Probably differs by country as well.

Don't quote me on anything, but in my locality:

1) Any work done just has to be INSPECTED and CERTIFIED by a trained electrician. You can do any and all electrical work by yourself, but you need to pay an electrician to come inspect it and sign off on it afterwards

2)
>Would they refuse to certify
Who is they? An electrician, no. An insurance agent or other beaurocrat? Definetly.
>>
>>920801
here, as the homeowner, you're allowed to do anything you want downstream of the panel. however, if you are getting renovations done that you have permits for, the electrical needs to be inspected before the permit can be closed.

iv only done my own electrical. running residential circuits is dead simple if you're not retarded.
>>

>How much of home electrical work do you actually need to call an electrician for?

Where I live you don't need to call anyone except an inspector who looks at the meter to make sure it is installed correctly before the electric company will hook up power. But, that is just if you want a meter and buy from the local power company. Nothing inside the home needs to be inspected.

I do all my own power needs unless it involves going into the crawl space. Then I pay someone else to do it because I can't be fucked to muck around down there anymore.

Hey /diy
Just in the process of buying my first house and wondered what home improvements you would recommend - whether for this house or not.
Things like cavity wall insulation, air extraction system, changing locks etc.
Pic is related, its a house for sale which is almost identical to mine but in better condition internally and with a conservatory.

Here's the link to it if you want to check it out: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-52237609.html

TL/DR What changes to your house would you make if you could? What would you recommend to a first time buyer?

>render
blasphemy. exposed brick pls.
aside from what you've already mentioned, trellis fencing and a gate as well as a basic alarm system wouldn't be a terrible investment. If you can get planning permission, put a steep roof on your garage and a mezzanine floor in there for almost double space. attic conversion mite b cool if there's enough head clearance. also make sure your boiler is in decent condition
>>
>>924272
Thanks for your reply
I'm not a fan of the render either but looking to target my limited resources on what counts, I would say that taking the render comes under aesthetics, unless you know of a good reason to be rid of it?
The whole garage likely needs to be replaced as it has white asbestos sheet roofing and is of prefab concrete construction which my surveyor thinks is likely to contain asbestos too - so can't put up shelves etc.
The house has an alarm thankfully, and the loft is mostly boarded but the roof has been re-tiled and they put new insulation in when they did it.
The boiler is old but is a combi, not the old tank type.
Would love to put some solar panels up at some point.
Any other ideas guys?

demo the front garden and pavement and do a proper one

demo the kitchen and re do it

external render has to go

wouldnt but a house with asbestos in it

Alright /diy/, settle an issue for me.

My mothers back veranda/patio is old and some boards have broken as people walk on them. I've put my foot through it, so has my mother and both my sisters. However a week or so before Christmas, my youngest sister fell through a board and servilely hurt her foot. So mum decided enough was enough and it was time to replace the broken boards

How ever given that she doesn't like spending money, she decided to do it her self/rope me into doing it. Also she doesn't want to replace all the boards, just the broken ones and the ones that looked/felt weak.
We were suppose to start yesterday, but I ended up telling her to go fuck herself.

This happened, or at least the events leading up to it happened, because I suggest that it would be better to mark all the boards she wanted to take off, measure them, then work out an order, so that we could then cut the replacement boards to length with minimal wastage. She however, wanted to just pull up the old boards and cut as she goes. Sounds like a pretty shitty reason to tell my mother to fuck off, but there were other reasons as well that I need not go into.

What I would like to know however, is which way is the better way of doing it. My way; measuring and cutting boards in a systematic way, to minimal wastage and get the most out of each board. Or her way; cut the boards as you need them and be left with off cuts that are too small be used, but big enough that they're an obvious waste?

>>
>>922717
besides what >>922722 said about you being an autistic spazz over a deck, you'll need to do a bit of both.

you should be taking measurements to begin with to know how many boards you're going to need, what kind of lumber to buy, how you'll be transporting them and how you'll be fastening them. however having a bit of leftover isnt a big deal if you all can find a use for some remnants of the boards, its better to have too much than too little for a project and theres nothing wrong with having some extra wood laying around.

Can you DIY cellulose insulation in walls like this with the standard rental unit or do you need a special blower?

>>
Bats are better for walls.
>>
>>921649
Yeah, the blown stuff will just settle over time and in a few years the top half of your room will be essentially uninsulated. Blown is for horizontal applications like attic floors.
>>
>>921651
>>921649
Actually in this application the cellulose is mixed with water which makes it stick to the walls and then dries hard so it doesn't settle. But yes, it's a specialized blower so as far as I know it's not DIY.

I have a side by side fridge in garage that's acting up. The refrigerator side isn't working right... it's drifted up to 60F in the compartment. The freezer side is fine.

I've dialed up the cooling setting on the fridge side and gotten that side down to 40F (was set at 4/7, now 7/7).

Something's obviously wrong with it, but I don't know enough about how these units work. The cooling / compressor's functional, or it wouldn't cool at all. Thoughts on what I should look at appreciated.

So I annihilated a screw while replacing a light fitting. How the hell do I remove this thing?

I've searched Google and have tried the following (in this order):
rubber band for grip
slightly drilling into head with thin bit for grip
thick wad of electrical tape for grip
wrapping twine around head and yanking.

Looks to me like a square drive bit might grab it.

Left handed drill could also work if you have one.

Failing those, it would be awkward but use a hacksaw to cut across the head and use a flat blade screwdriver.

I got a rpi2b for Christmas and I am deploying it as a file, web, mail server.
The problem is that there are no nice cases avalible with room for a 120mm fan.
(I have a 120mm fan spinning on top of the open case for now)

So my idea is to build a case, I came to ask what sort of wood, what tools, how to finish it, if anyone has done this before.

I have basic woodwork class experience and think with some guidance I could come up with a decent first project.

pic related is sort of what I'm going for. still some touches to add.

>>
Why do you need the fan in the first place?
> file, web, mail server
None of these are processor heavy.
>>
>>923111

The RPi2 generates little enough heat that you can handle it with a heatsink at max load for extended periods of time.

The whole system maxes out at 4 watts- for comparison, modern smartphones such as the iPhone 5 series discharge around 2 watts in operation. Those aren't even air cooled, and typically operate inside a protective case.

You don't need a fan, and probably don't even need a heatsink. If you're really concerned, you can buy appropriately sized heatsinks for spare change.

Hey plumber people:

Is there any reason at all for a bathtub water trap to have a completely open pipe sticking out of the top of it?

Water dripped down into the downstairs hallway after a housemate's visiting parent took a bath. I'm pretty sure there's a clog in the trap and the excess pressure from the bath draining sent right out the top of the pipe.

Dear /diy/kes,

My home is being extensively remodeled (adding a 2nd story) and the old structure with T&G sheathing had some apparent water issues noticeable after being gutted.
There are no obvious indications of mold issues but are there any suitable products/coatings to apply to clean/kill/prevent mold growth to old wood sheathing now, before we close everything up again with possible added benefit of potentially preventing mold growth if there are any water intrusions in the future?

I would just house wrap than siding. There are products like killz but if you don't have mold you should not have to worry.

Maybe wipe down with bleach let dry and paint with kilz drylok or something

Also if possible figure what happened the first time and make sure it doesn't happen agian. Seriously id watch my contractor like a hound if it was me. But this is more of I've had to fix too much bullshit at my job that our subs

I was thinking about painting over with Killz as well on some old spots on the old T&G siding but thought there were better products suited for this, thanks!

House was built in the 1940s and had leaky pipes removed in the late 1970s (been in the family) so I just wanted to cover all my bases while it's opened up.

I'm looking to start up my own company but I've been trying to find engineers that create camera and they are very hard to find.

I've been suggested to go to camera companies such as Canon or Nixon and ask but why would they give me their engineers?

Any other suggestions?

I'm pretty sure you have to remove the driveshaft first, which probably means unbolting the steering and suspension knuckles so you can swing that out some to make room to pull the driveshaft out. As is, enjoy your trip to the wrecking yard to find replacements for the parts you've completely destroyed in your ham-fisted attempt to dismantle this.

Sup, /diy/nos
I have a car problem and although I just checked out /o/ for the first time, there was nothing specific about whether asking dumb questions about auto repair was allowed or if you're just supposed to use the board to masturbate to amazing cars. I know nothing about cars but its pretty obvious some jackass popped the hood and ripped... something out. Even though I plan on making repairs myself, If this isn't a /diy/ thing, that's cool and sorry for wasting your time. Direct me to the right board and I'll annoy them. I can post more pics of... whatever is relevant.
