I bought a Dust Deputy not too long ago to use with my tuckpoint grinder when I repointed my basement. It worked ok, but it seems like the fine particles were making it to the vacuum filter and I had to shake it out two or three times while repointing because I noticed less was being sucked up due to the clogged filter. Something similar happened when I used it to suck up drywall dust. I know these two substances aren't really what the Dust Deputy was meant to suck up, but it has worked pretty well otherwise. Is there a way that I could put a "water filter" between the vacuum and the dust deputy to potentially capture more of these particles without severely degrading the cfm performance? I was thinking something basic, like another 5 gallon bucket with a pvc inlet tube going down to ~3 inches from the bottom of the bucket and the outlet (leading to the vacuum) at the lid, and filling the bucket up about halfway or so with water. My only concern would be a larger suction would be generated and the water would be sucked out of the bucket in whole or in part. Also, I would probably need something to diffuse the air moving into the water so it's not a large glob of air rushing through. Any ideas?

So guys I have a project in mind but it involves some steel cutting. Problem: I don't have any power tools (torch cutter, plasma cutter, angle grinder, etc.). Is there a simple way to cut steel without these instruments?
>Pic not related those aren't the plates

short answer:no

long answer: yes, with very very heavy manual labour for a couple years.

rent tools or don't ask dumb questions.
>>
>>925442
Yes, you can cut steel with a Hacksaw.

It will take a very, very long time, a lot of sweat and a bunch of Hacksaw blades if you have any significant amount of steel to cut through.

Rent/buy a cheap angle grinder FFS. The only way a Hacksaw comes out cheaper is if your time is 100% worthless.

Question:
Drive 30 minutes round trip and pay £18 for metal £1.04 fuel cost

or to save £5.50 on price

Drive 2 hours round trip and pay £12.47 for parts £2.80 fuel cost

It's exactly the same part, the closer company buy it from the larger company further away.

£3.74 more but save one and a half hours of my life on the boring fucking motorway.

Also I'm making a welding bench, any advice?

Yes it is.
I don't know where you got the £2.50 from but yes, i've sooner do nothing and pay £2.50 than drive for an hour, even though i'm a taxi driver.

Not to mention wear on the vehicle. This is a penny wise, pound foolish way of thinking. If you really want to save money move to an apartment that's $100 cheaper a month, save $1,200 annual. Quit worrying about $5 is retarded.

ITT- the ultimate trailerable catamaran!

Please help me with suggestions, drawings, etc.

I live in a landlocked state, but the sea calls to me. So I figured I'd try to design a catamaran.

I'd like help, pls!

My biggest question right now, is can it be a flat bottom? All the designs for trailerable catamarans I've seen have rounded, contoured bottoms.

I've got plenty questions, I'll get into those later.

Here are towing regulations in all 50 states.

You'll notice in my OP picture, the rectangle at the bottom is 40 squares long and 13 squares high. That represents the maximum side profile I have to work with. The square at the top left is the maximum frontal profile. Each square is one foot.

At the bottom left is a line 13 high beside an L shaped line that's 7 high and 3 across the bottom. That's how big my doors are to the backyard and I put those there for scale.

Here's one of the better trailerable catamaran layouts I've seen. I've got a couple I use for inspiration.

The main problems to me are the hulls are too short. I'd want standing headroom for almost the entire length of the hulls.

Any tips on saving on electric?

>HVAC was replaced in 2014
>keep most lights off when I'm not in the room

What else?
36 posts and 4 images submitted.

well it all depends
where do you live?
somewhere hot? ac is expensive, blow up a paddling pool infront of your sofa to steep your feet in to keep you cool
somewhere cold? wear a jumper. if your heating is even electric.

insulate your house. double glazing, blinds, heavy curtains. curtains over doors. how many rooms/floors? heat/cool a smaller area, live in a bedroom if necessary. keep other doors closed to help insulate from the outside

what electric do you use?
lights? switch to cfl/led when you need to. keep your house tidy so you can walk around in the dark. get a miners lamp helmet with a handcrank.
adjust your sleeping hours to use daylight efficiently. hibernate during the winter.

tv? get a much smaller one or read a book, listen to radio.

computer? use computers at a library to do your internetting. get a jazz mag instead of watching porn online.

electric oven? get a gas oven. eat microwave meals instead. or cold food i.e. sandwices and shit. cook food outside on a bbq using scrap wood. chop up pallets for wood if you dont mind lung cancer

electric shower? get a gas shower
lay a hosepipe outside under a sheet of glass and learn the navy shower technique to save
water.

want to spend to save? solar cells on a south (depending on location) facing roof. watch out for snow. keep them clean, sell electricity to grid.
farm? wind turbine. easy to diy too plenty of tutorials.
live near a river? build a water turbine. environmental police will fuck your shit up if they find you however.

around here if you have an electric car you get free parking and free recharge in the city while your car is parked, so buy an electric car and fill the back with extra batteries, charge them for free during the day then run your house via inverter by night.

all depends how far you want to take it.
>>
>>923469
Fuck. I guess your right, thanks though for the info

electricity is cheap, after the big saving things like adjusting thermostat and turning down water heater. your time is better spent making more money than saving on electricity

Okay, the goal is to use this auto led bar for an aquarium moon light (preferably with a dimmer).

I did some calculations but I likely fucked up somewhere. The bar needs 12V DC and a maximum of 1A. I'm in America, so the outlet I'll be using is 120V AC.

getting the psu from amazon will be much easier than building one from scratch (also probably safer, if you don't cheap out)

it's got 4 connections, so my guess is that it's a pushbutton, similar to this, except the push-in part is recessed. if you press in the center, you might feel a click.

So I'm building a table for /tg/ shit, and I want to put a projector inside to project whatever I need to show onto the table's surface. Then, of course, i'd put a layer of clear material over that to protect the projection surface.

The question is, what kind of material is best suited for this sort of projection? Is plexiglass or plastic better for protective covering? Would the projector take too much space?
29 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
That's actually a pretty dank idea. You would need to shell out quite a bit for a decent projector tho, and especially important will be finding one that will focus at such a short distance (ie floor to surface of table). Plexiglass might be a good protective surface, but you'll need something semi-opaque for the projection to show up on, like a white sheet of some kind.
A (perhaps cheaper) alternative would be to put a big flatscreen into the table, but both have challanges
>>
I'd probably use a 4:3 flatpanel bolted under plexiglass in a way that it won't be load-bearing as to protect the screen itself. Any projector that can focus in that short of a distance is gonna set you back quite a bit.
>>
I actually work with projectors and surfaces on a daily basis, and I believe you could use anything white to project on as long as the room is dark enough. The covering for it would be best if it were very clean glass, but reflections are going to suck. You'd be better off just using a durable white surface that has a low-gloss finish. Maybe particle board of some type. If your ceiling is not at least 6 to 8 feet away then you may have trouble getting it to be a big enough image. But if it's closer then it will look better, so do some research on that matter and worry less about the table.

Pic not extremely related.

Has anyone got an idea for me of where I can find a jar-like container suitable for the following needs:
1. Not delicate (not like glass).
2. As near these measurements, but not lower than: 45mm opening, 150mm depth.
3. Strong sealing lid - so that the thin oil (Paraffin) I intend keep in it won't seep out.
4. Preferably transparent.

coke bottle? a little to deep?
old vasaleen tub, tooth paste tube if you clean it out well enough, not transparent though, you can buy plastic viles and plastic test tubes from ebay for dirt cheap, they have screw on lids... probably get 20 for like $10?
>>
>>925435
thanks for the comment; but those both sound too small, certainly the coke bottle. you might have mis-read the minimal measurements.

imagine a large jar (like those for pasta sauce or coffee grains); but with a very good sealing lid and not made of glass.
>>
Lava Lamp bottle.

Look for a stronger glass ( thicker borosilicate glass)

Or use plastic

How to keep cast iron work tops rust free without much maintenance, and without imparting a greasy feel to it? I do a lot of /diy/ stuff on top of my table saw, it being the flattest and sturdiest surface I have. But even leaving a palm print on it tarnishes it.

Johnson paste wax - felt amazing to the touch, but barely any protection, tarnishing occurs within a few days and any moisture on the top would surely result in surface rust

WD-40/light penetrating oils - significantly improved protection, oily residue

I will not try a heavier oil or grease, because obviously despite being the best rust protectant, the surface has to be at least sort of clean to the touch. So basically, rust protection and 'feel' seem like inverse properties. Are there any substance that bucks this trend? Or perhaps, is there a good hard-coat that could be applied to bare cast iron to keep it dry to the touch, yet durable enough to work on and totally rust proofed?

The setup requires a timer to complete the circuit and turn on the enlarger lamp. I don't have a timer. The timer plugs into the back of the power supply.

I only took a basic electrical engineering course in college so I don't know much about this. I'd like to avoid having to buy a timer. Could I use a spare electrical cord, plug it in the back of the power supply, and cut the other end off, connecting the positive and negative wires?

OH wow guy, I just bought a Zenith BnW enlarger for my girlfriend.
She wants to build a dark room so I'm hoping to surprize her. A late new year sort of present.
However didn't get a timer with the unit. Its a simple little unit with a incandescent bulb in the top that just plugs in to a wall outlet.
I figured id just make an Arduino controlled timer with a relay switch and a timer.
But I haven't given it much thought yet.
I kinda figured i'd use a couple of buttons one prolongs exposures buy like x sec another one shortens it by x. 2 more buttons define the incrament, and a third button starts the exposure.
But I'm thinking if I should use an led display, might fuck up exposures :/

The patio looks like a pretty dark corner. The dark color of the wood adds to that. You might want to change that.
Also the column, floor and everything else looks dirty. Clean that and/or buy new patio furniture. Add plants or grow spices or stuff.
