Dear /diy/

I have a 5W, 18V, .28 mah solar panel and I want to convert the voltage to around 5v, and increase the amperage to at least .5mah. How could I do this?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
if you can into schematics and datasheets, look up this regulator chip, or similar: AP34063

otherwise, ready made circuits can be found by googling. one easy way is to use a Blackberry car adapter (charger) with takes in 10-25V and puts out 5V. $3 at the thrift store. other brands may work, but are not specifically rated for 25V.
>>
>>928027
It's not 'milliampere-hours', it's just milliamps, and it's not '0.28mA', that would be 280 *microamps*, it's 280 *milliamps*, or 0.28A.

Now, then.. what you need is a step-down (or 'buck') switching power supply. Since you need 5V (not 'around' 5V, it's *5V*) you can get a module that does this off-the-shelf -- which in your case is a good thing, since I don't have much faith at this point in your being able to actually construct one.
>>
>>928027
..oh, and since you're confused about it: 'milliampere-hours' is a unit of measure you'd use for a *battery*, not a solar panel of any kind; it's a unit of measure with regards to *storage capacity*.

Yes we can, if you show us your plans and tell us about your skills and available materails

google "bookshelf", "cool shelf", "crazy bookshelf" or whatever. Pick a few designs, think about them, adapt them. Then present them to us. After that we can help you iron out potential problems.

Pic related sir. That design is cool with me.

a bookshelf is the simplest thing anyone can make. go to your local big-box store, look for shelving wood, it looks like the pic, and is typically 8-14 inches wide, by 8 feet long. the front side is covered in veneer so it looks good. you need 2 pieces for the sides, say 1'x5' and 5 pieces for the shelves, 1'x2'. for each shelf, drill 2 holes thru the side pieces, and drive 2-in screws thru the middle of the shelves, after drilling pilot holes. when you stand it up, it'll be all wiggly, so you need to add a cross-brace in the back to make it solid as fuck.

I went to a vacation a month ago and when I came back, I find my pillowcase and end up like this.
The dark spots you notice are happened to be molds from the moisture from my room.
I tried soaking it with chlorine for a few days, and after that, nothing seem to take effect.
Any help to get rid of the stains?

Vinegar should kill it, but you'd need to wait for it to essentially die and crumble out of the fibers (assuming they have not been permanently marred by the mold) before the discolouration goes away. I'd try hitting it with vinegar, letting it sit for an hour or so, then a few days out in the sun followed by a wash.

Or, ya know, a new pillowcase from goodwill for 20c..
>>
>>927822
I like my case because it's custom-made, and it pays double because of the stitching.
I'll try anything as long as these bastards are gone. I can try hydrogen peroxide mixed with hot saltwater and chlorine and go for the overkill.
How long will I leave on the basin for it to disappear instead of an hour, overnight?
>>
>>927823
Yeah, if you can. I was going to suggest an overnight soak but didn't know how much [chemical] you had on hand, but if you're keen to and have enough to soak it completely, give it a shot.

So I have this spool of 12 ga pure copper, very high quality speaker wire that I purchased more than a decade ago, back when copper was pretty cheap.

Can I use two pairs of these wires, encase them in some sort of sheathing, and terminate them with a plug and socket myself? The only thing holding me back are possible code violations and how insurance might react if there's a fire somewhere in the house. Though I'm sure that if I were to make this, it would be as perfectly safe as any other extension cord you can buy. I just want to stay by the book, just in case there's a retarded rule against using this sort of insulation in this speaker wire as an a/c mains cable or something.

USA btw.
>>
>how insurance might react
Don't worry anon, because you'll be dead.

Have you ever felt old speaker wire after it's been sitting on the floor of a living room for a decade? I wouldn't trust that shit.
>>
insurancefriend here.

Depending on your carrier, you'll likely be covered as most policies cover general stupidity.

Enjoy it going on your claims history that a homeowner generally makes poor decisions like using speaker wire instead of wire designed to carry 120volts.
>your permanent record!
Yeah thats what it is, and its how actuaries set rates to insure your historically dumb ass.

Then, if you ever sold the place you'd have to upgrade it to code if it were installed to the house.

tl;dr don't be a dumbass, use speaker wire for speakers, and extension cords for extensions.

Carpentry is what framers do. Furniture isn't made by carpenters. You might argue that any kind of woodworking is under the umbrella of carpentry but we would argue that you are a cunt and need to shut your whore mouth.

Well, what do you have available? What are your skills? Whats the budget? Can you give us ANY fucking info bro?

>Also not sure the best way to fit the legs on the curved surface
Depends on the materials.

>Any advice would be appreciated
You can start with reading the fucking sticky. You can then make a post that isn't retarded. Then we might help you. Sage cause I ain't gonna bump this.
>>
>>927478
Working down the sticky;

>ask google
I couldn't find anything on google for getting a shape in such a deep piece. Was looking under the presumption of using wood, and with no one local able to do this if there was a better way of doing this before going down that route.

>list resources
I am asking trying to find the optimal way to do this regardless of resources time etc., I was thinking wood would be best but as you said getting the shape depends on the material, if a certain wood or something else is best I would like to know. Regarding skills, if I don't have them I can find someone that does, but its best to approach with an idea in mind hence I am here trying to find the best way, before finding the people for it.

>pictures
The attached should give a good idea of what I am going for?

For your points

>shape and material
"not sure how get the shape nor the material to do this", again trying to be optimal

>advice
I did read the sticky, maybe I didn't clarify resources but thats it. And thats because I am trying to find out what I need, and am then going to get it

So again, any help at all would be useful, coming from if you were doing this, how would you go about it.

so help me with these braces. I am retarded and dont own a drop saw, only a circular saw. also, I have chisels and a mitre guage and ruler things but I always get like a degree off and shit doesnt mate properly. so i am struggling to make timber braces. can I prevent the legs from sliding apart using steel cable? I'd rather not build some epic system of levers around this. its the legs of a loft bed frame. I am trying to keep it as minimalist as possible. if all else fails I will just disguise the bracing at the back with book shelves.

is there something more simple I am missing? I looked into sets of steel ring braces for this but they cost about 300$ so fuck that. I also investigated using kerfed arches but tension made them suck balls and snap.

Traditionally you'd use rods, joined in the middle of the 'X'.

As you've observed, flexible cables are not much use in compression.

If it absolutely has to be cables, then a wooden brace across the back would make the member a full box, and then the only movement you'd have to worry about is where the legs stay parallel and move away from square. Cables can help now, because whichever direction this happens in, one of them will be in tension.
>>
>>926798
the other option is to make the shape trapezoidal, so the angle fights compression, and use cables to keep them from spreading.

Hey guys, hope you can give me some advice.

I got this old Dremel tool from my deceased grandad. So I don't have a manual or anything. I use it for a lot of stuff and love it, but lately it's started to give off a high pitched whine using it. It sounds like it just needs to be lubricated.

Do any of you know where i can squirt some of the lube into? I don't want to ruin this thing if i can avoid it.

Don't oil it. Use thick grease like lithium bearing grease. You can get it from bike stores for 1$. That said, get it on the armatures or brushes and you're fucked. There's probably a bearing kit or it could be failed electrical. What kind of whine?

Hello mod masters

I'm going camping for 2 weeks but plan to do some computer work so I decided to bring my laptop along. there's going to be a lot of sun so I can use my solar charger to charge my laptop in between points, but I also need to use a 3 terabyte hard drive.

And herein lies my problem. Normal 1tb hard drives can draw off the laptops battery power via USB cable but the 3tb cannot do that entirely. I've checked the voltage on the drives and they require 12volts to function. However, I'm pretty sure its not that easy as simply hooking up a 12v portable source. I'm pretty sure something like a car battery would be out of the question lol

Any trick or tool I can use to make a 3tb hard drive function from a portable power source?

How is it normally powered? Plug into the wall?
>>
3TB for camping seems a bit excessive, unless you're doing some major league video editing. usually I take out my HDD and use a Linux distro on a 16G thumb-drive, along with a few gigs of pron, and that keeps me occupied for a couple of weeks.

Hello /diy/. I rarely go here so I'll keep it straight; the key to my parents' bedroom snapped in half and is stuck in the keyhole, and we've been looking for a way to get the key out. I have a property that i had to evict a long time tenant from (lied about not smoking in the house).

so what is the best course of action to de-smoke my house?

i've already figured

>wash walls/ceilings with TSP
>use kilz primer and paint
>replace all carpeting
>clean HVAC system
>replace all wood (molding/doors/frames)

anything im missing?

>long time tennant
why not let them keep living there then? they seemed to be paying rent and already fucked up the place. seems like it would have been cheaper to just let them stew.

just wipe down everything enough to paint/seal over it again. why would you need to replace doors and moulding because they smoked in the house? that shit can be painted.

your HVAC system should have had a filter dingus. did you not install the right filter?

also what the hell were they smoking to make the walls that brown? ive been in houses where the tennants/owners have smoked for 20 years inside and the walls dont go that color. meth lab maybe?

and the house isnt fucked up yet, but i'll be goddamned if im just gonna let it ride because lazy

>just wipe down everything enough to paint/seal over it again. why would you need to replace doors and moulding because they smoked in the house? that shit can be painted.

well i wanted to replace them anyway but wood soaks up nicotine like no one's business.

>your HVAC system should have had a filter dingus. did you not install the right filter?

yes. MERV 8 filters were used and provided to the tenant. but smoke permeates everything.
i hear a bit of butt-mad. I guess smoker detected.
>also what the hell were they smoking to make the walls that brown? ive been in houses where the tennants/owners have smoked for 20 years inside and the walls dont go that color. meth lab maybe?

My God... Those walls. They had to be smoking a absolute ton to do that.

I'm so glad I don't smoke.

Also if you ever get smoking tenants again. Require they use a air purifier rated to HVAC 13 or higher. 8 will not filter it out.

We used to have a wall mounted calendar, nice looking as we designed and printed it ourself. Very inconvenient to arrange whole family's every coming and going.
I bought an used 10€ chonk tablet and made a calendar out of that. Now it's synced. Ripped out the battery just for safety. And it has Spotify and onenote so that's even more convenient. This project assumed family....

I don't know what this thing you are offering is.
