Hey /diy, first time poster here, but do lurk often. Hope you can help/advise on pic related.

I hae torn-down an old, defunct Epson Stylus SX230 for parts (motors, COG 1 1/4" LCD) for use in other projects.

I would like to use just the scanner as I will be satisfying my printing needs with a cheaper to run monochrome laserjet (not multi-function) hence desire to make useable the scanner.
It was in full working order before teardown and has not been tinkered with at all. The flat ribbon cable is the only I/O and has 4 pins, BLANK, 15 pins arrangement.

How would you /diy ers go about getting this to work?

Maybe related by how useful the other components are re: scanner; maybe not...but as a side issue, how would you get said parts working and put to use? In particular, the LCD.

N.B: cannot find online free Service Manual for the printer nor Data Sheet on the GiantPlus 1140 LCD and other non-Epson components.

I can up images of them if needed. Thanks in advance guys.

Hey /diy/ :)
Looking for a practical method of cleaning these seashells - pic related. I want the one on the right to look like the one on the left - I assume its jadeness / discolouration is a result of some sort of chemical reaction with the salinity of the water - obviously its a bit scratched up, so it's not going to look EXACTLY like the one on the left, but I just want something to bring out the colour and disolve excess scrub.
I have tried using a file already and found it just disintegrates the shell completely. Looking for something a bit more efficient, willing to try many methods since I have many shells.
I'm looking for a method that balances cost and product quality, even at the expense of time (to a degree).
Any help would be very much appreciated!
At the moment my current plan is to soak them in hydrogen peroxide and scour them with steel wool, however, I don't know if this will work as good as I think it will.
Thoughts / Suggestions?

Woops, the picture was rotated for some reason, probably got to due with the import on my phone. Sorry about that. I want the one on the left to look like the one on the right. Thanks folks

before peroxide, soak in citric acid and baking soda in alternate sessions to get rid of anything that is caked on the surface, then peroxide, that will give you a good surface, but if it is rough by nature, there is no way you can make it like right without heavy sanding and polishing
>>
>>926846
I figured out when I was filing it down that the colouring is just on the outermost layer of shell, that is, too serious a file/sand/grind/scour will probably just remove the colour clean off. I really like the idea of polishing though, what material should I use?

Locksmiths of /diy/, how hard is it to pick a lock in real life outside of meme shows that do it five seconds? What is the most discrete way to destroy a lock?

Anywhere from 30 seconds to fuck it, I quit. Typically a locksmith will make a magic show out of it, errecting a curtain and everything. A nigger will just kick the door in. And anywhere requiring a door that a single nigger can't kick in will use locks that can't be simple picked in 15 minutes.

Hey guys. I'm thinking of starting my own cig making business. I started rolling my own cigs and I'm not bad at it. I'd like to keep them fairly clean like american spirits but still addictive to get customers hooked on them. What do you suggest? I realize vaping is kinda putting cigarette companies out of business but I'd still like to try

Recently watched Ex Machina, and it got me thinking. (fuck zuckerberg)

Thought about what it would take to control things in my home with only my voice. IE: "Lights". "Turn on the TV" "Lock the doors" "It's cold in here, turn up the heat"

What would be a good starting point?

I've used X10 technology to do stuff like that. you need a USB-X10 interface box, and X10 receivers in your lights, or the light switches, or sockets. however, it's a dying technology which is being replaced by something whose name i forget. see www.smarthome.com for examples.

So I want to get started on welding, should I buy the 150A thingy or the 250A thingy? Whats the practical difference? Also looking for advice and tips on general welding.

Inb4 welding classes
>>
>>915841

With the 150A one you can use electrodes up to 3,2mm. With the 250 one up to 4mm maybe 5 if they dont have a thick flux. It also depends on the type and brand what amperage they need to be run on. You will be more limited with the 150A, but if thats good enough for what you want to weld, then get the 150 one and save some money.

Are they DC or AC?. I prefer AC runs smoother, no arc-blow,

check the duty-cyle. The 250 will probably have a higher one. meaning you can weld for a longer period of time with a higher amperage. Without the machine overheating.

People from /diy/, i need your help. I just started stick welding, but when I try to strike an arc it just sparks sometimes and can't get a nice arc going. Anybody know what the problem could be?

On the picture you can see my welding machine. The maximum is 160 Amp's and it's made for 230 volt. The diameter can vary from 2 till 4 mm.

Might be a conduction issue

Make sure the connections are not isolated
>>
>>914923
Several factors can be at play here.
Are you on the right polarity?
What is the thickness of metal?
What type of metal are you trying to weld?
What electrodes are you using?

Some common mistakes. The usual, travel speed, angle and distance. Make sure you got those down pat.
>>
>>914923
partly it's because you suck, but mostly it's because your welder is the cheapest AC buzzbox that can be bought, these turds literally cannot keep a 6011 lit, and that's assuming you don't overheat it trying to arc up.

sucks to be you.

Hey /diy/, so I got rid of my 110 stick welder a while ago (century 70) and upgraded to a mig welder. Problem is it's that I can't practice very much becuase the price of flux core wire. So I devised this. Since the tip is always electrically hot, I decided to clamp it to the work piece and stick a rod in the ground clamp, thus making the polarity positive on the electrode side. It works pretty well with 3/16 6013. But I now have a bigger goal. I looked at a guide to make this particular welder dc, and ordered the part( black finned this with wires) to make it dc. Now to my question, would it be possible to make this a dc tig welder as well? I have a bottle of 100 argon and can get a tig whip for cheap.
Tldr; I need help with a ghetto multi process welder.

Hey /diy/
I have a few questions and I'd appreciate some help on these:

I recently bought some InstaMorph and another brand of polymorph Plastic along with a Dremel rotary tool.
End goal is shaping a rough prototype for my idea.

What are the best materials/tools for prototyping in the early stages?
I want to eventually just print off of 3d printers but for now I need to get the first design to size.

I was thinking of shaping out wood to the pieces I need then molding the plastic but that seems like so much work.

ANy help on working on hardware/electrical/arduino, etc would be helpful

Buddy it's all depends on what you're making.
If you're making a housing for a device that's as big as a TV or a microwave, you can go with wood, since its secure long lasting relatively light.
If you're making something the size of a cell phone wood would be bulky. maybe use aluminium sheets if you know how to shape them. these are somewhat sturdier and look more solid but are a bitch to put together if you cant weld.
If your set on plastics, use a polyester resin and fiberglass and cut it to shape with a dremel for your thin case if it's just a case and not functional parts.
Can't help you much if you're vague as fuck

I didn't want to be too specific and have people bag on me.
I want to eventually make a bluetooth solar interior lighting system w/ app for entertainment lighting.
I plan on using those new flat LED styling lighting.
I'm keen on plastics because I want to be able to remold and remodel new designs if the first doesn't work.

I've never worked with fiberglass or any resins before, what tools would I need?
I also plan on making my own cosplay gear this year so I'm building a small area on the side of my house for projects.

So I am thinking of following this guide for making latex balloons which seems easy and is detailed enough except for one fucking thing.
What kind of fucking latex I need.

Seriously it just says liquid latex (a pre vulcanized mix) and I cant seem to find it on any online store, or anywhere really. Even asking the question in any search engine seems to not give a concise answer.

Is this a conspiracy? Or am I just retarded?

oh and this is the guide I am looking at if anyone wants to point out flaws/problems with it.

I have a pair of very strong torsion springs that I could probably only get 1 turn out of, they are about 1" diameter.
I also have a "rope" (for the sake of simplicity) that I need to move 3 feet with a little bit of spring assist.
Is there any simple way to turn high torque low movement action into high movement low torque action when dealing with springs?

What I am thinking of doing is in essence a miniature garage door, but I think garage door torsion springs spool a lot more times than once, don't they?

>>
>>927088
Put the spring on a rod that will be secured at both ends. Secure one end of the spring to something solid to keep it from rotating, and secure the other to a wheel that turns on the rod. Size the wheel such that it gives you the torque and movement that you want. Secure the rope to the wheel.
>>
I've only seen industrial doors being worked on . But if you look at your garage door spring you'll see it has paint on it probably in a corkscrew fashion. Before its tensioned that paint is in a single straight line along the entire coil. They'd count their quarter turns and usually it be around 40 or more. So roughly 10 or more full rotations.

Just something I picked up driving the gdoor guy around on an order selector. But we're also talking like 30x30 doors.

>TFW one of the springs snaps when you're driving through the door and door comes crashing down on top of the forklift cage. Make it rain tempered glass.

Hi, a weird question:

I don't even know if this is even doable, but I live on the first floor of a big building, and I want to put up a one way mirror glass ceiling in a kind-of-backyard room that I have on the back.

My question, is if there is some kind of glass that mirrors the view form upside, but still let's enough sunlight to sunbathe, if wanted to.

Thank you, and I'm sorry if I made it difficult to understand, english is not my first language.

You could try mirror window tint
>>
>>927083
polarized film. Mirror film might reflect too much light.
Short answer: no. not cheaply at least.
>>
>>927094
also keep in mind that for these the privacy will exist only for the darker side of the glass. If it;s night and the inside is illuminated better than outside, it will be hard to see out from the room but easy to look into the room.

Hello there.
So i'm working on an autonomous hexapod and I need a gps, an ultrasound or a camera and some module to ensure communication between the hexapod and the laptop.
I'm working using and arduino. I'd really appreciate your suggestions on the matter.
The cost plays a major role but I won't go too cheap

The robot is small you can fit it in a box of 10X10X10 cm
for the distance I would say about 70 to 80 meters.

What kind of communication? Telemetry? Video? Commands? What interface are you using to connect to Arduino and laptop currently? Also what terrain? You could achieve everything with a simple 2.4GHz WIFI or RF link.
