You can not DIY a laser with that level of precision. You could easily make one that burns off small patches though. If you wanted. For some reason. That wasn't insane. I mean, you can do self surgery with a pocket knife too, doesn't mean it's a good idea.

You can not target the DNA without damaging the rest of the cell. That requires higher wavelengths then a laser produces, like Xrays or Gamma rays.

the transformer idea sucks. you'd be re-creating all the things that were wrong with E.T. ignition. if you're going that way you should rewind the stator.

and how is your CDI module gonna figure out the spark timing? even the chinese pitbike ignitions need a pulse coil input, are you going to weld a trigger blob onto your flywheel?

I am hoping to avoid rewinding the stator because it would require a lot of turns to get the voltage I need and as the old magnets aren't as powerful as they were 50 years ago, I can't be sure what voltage I will be getting out of it. With the transformer approach I can afford to experiment.
The trigger problem is easy to solve, the high voltage supply is not.

have you thought about a DC CDI like the ooracing shotgun? 12V and pulse coil in, spark out. £50. it would save a lot of fucking-about.

getting 12V from the stator is a matter of fitting a different regulator. typically the voltage coming out of the stator hovers around 30VAC and the reg/rec pulls it down to working voltage.

I often use wipe on gloss polyurethane, take your time and apply a ton of coats (like 10 or so) lightly sand with 600-800 grit every 3 coats just to remove any high spots or dust nibs.
That alone will get you a nice gloss, but for the best gloss let the poly cure for at least a week, then come back with some automotive wax and a buffer. That sumbitch will blind you when the light hits.

you see where it says Step Input. you put a pulse on there and it advances one step (equal to, let's say, 3.9 degrees) so, to control speed, you just put out more or fewer pulses. easy peasy.

You do need a "stepper" motor driver, or a motor driver board that can operate a stepper motor. There are also "brushless" (or BLDC) motors and DC motors, and those need different driver circuits.

If the motor is smaller and not put under much mechanical load, just any stepper motor driver will prolly work okay. If the motor is larger then you might want to get one that can put out some current. Can you show the motor or link to where you bought it?

If the motor is a nema 17 or a smaller nema 23, I tend to use a Sainsmart TB6560 1-axis driver.

The 3D printers just use little chip drivers (with no heatsinks) but these occasionally fail too. But Sainsmart has those also if you wanna.

Push sticks... I'm in that same boat with OP, pretty much don't use them until I need to push near the blade.

Steam softens the staves to a point of usability. Once they're soft you bend them into shape and let them cool & dry so they hold. Then you can use fine nails and banding to hold the furniture together.

does anyone know what exactly the difference in shape is for in these things?

Security systems aren't that close to electrical in my mind. It's low voltage and a lot of shit work running wires in shitty conditions. Industrial/commercial electrical is a lot more fun.

Fitter here. I'm a fitter and while I enjoy what I do, the upward mobility - especially while remaining in the field - is so much better for a sparky.

As a fitter though you can specialise in specific types of machinery, manufacturer specific and become an OEM installer/commissioning tech.

Installation teams for my family's security systems company are primarily low grade electricians. Because it is really just pulling wire and plugging in. The difficult part is neat and efficient installation which is where the electricians line pulling experience comes in.

Any programming is particularly basic and if there are unusual faults then one of the few actual technicians will break themselves away from their desk and do some field work for once if the system is not remotely accessible.

But definitely agree that Industrial and Commercial is significantly much more fun and also more lucrative when the work is available. Particularly if you are a heavy electrical contractor then you are involved in not just the electrical but can be responsible for organizing the whole installation, including directing excavators, cranes, concrete works and all kinds of shit.

It provokes you to more often solve problems and come up with (to an extent within code) your own solutions. Fitters seem to tend to primarily follow directions and schematics. I have a friend who is an electrical engineer but his companies bread and butter is generator installation but that alone has him traveling all over the western hemisphere and in many various fields (marine, industrial, commercial, residential, agricultural) and he doesn't just plug and play. He provides solutions.

I certainly hope they're as like-minded as you, and not the, admittedly, callous higher ups I picture them to be in my head. Though I have to reiterate, I am not the one doing this, my father is. I'm just trying to collect information to help.
