Can I build a LASER to destroy one skin cell?

How about just the DNA in a cell?

It's important.

Thinking about skin cancer.
>>
You can not DIY a laser with that level of precision. You could easily make one that burns off small patches though. If you wanted. For some reason. That wasn't insane. I mean, you can do self surgery with a pocket knife too, doesn't mean it's a good idea.

You can not target the DNA without damaging the rest of the cell. That requires higher wavelengths then a laser produces, like Xrays or Gamma rays.

Thread thickness is dependent on the needle, not the machine. So get a needle that can handle thicker thread.

I have an old motorcycle which I would like to fit with a modern CDI ignition. The ignition would be of the type typically fitted to dirt bikes and which require a high voltage AC source. They have a permanent magnet alternator with a separate high voltage stator for the ignition in addition to a 12V stator. My bike has a permanent magnet alternator which contains two 6V stators wired in parallel.
I am wondering if it is possible to use a transformer to provide a ~300V source from the stock alternator to power the CDI. I could dedicate one of the stators to the ignition if necessary. Is providing the high voltage supply as simple as this or am I missing something? Is there any specific type of transformer or characteristics/features I would need?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>old motorcycle
be more specific for fuck's sake

the transformer idea sucks. you'd be re-creating all the things that were wrong with E.T. ignition. if you're going that way you should rewind the stator.

and how is your CDI module gonna figure out the spark timing? even the chinese pitbike ignitions need a pulse coil input, are you going to weld a trigger blob onto your flywheel?
>>
>>926732
It's a 1965 Ducati 250.
I am hoping to avoid rewinding the stator because it would require a lot of turns to get the voltage I need and as the old magnets aren't as powerful as they were 50 years ago, I can't be sure what voltage I will be getting out of it. With the transformer approach I can afford to experiment.
The trigger problem is easy to solve, the high voltage supply is not.
>>
>>926755
costs about ten bux to get a flywheel remagnetised.

have you thought about a DC CDI like the ooracing shotgun? 12V and pulse coil in, spark out. £50. it would save a lot of fucking-about.

getting 12V from the stator is a matter of fitting a different regulator. typically the voltage coming out of the stator hovers around 30VAC and the reg/rec pulls it down to working voltage.

I'm painting several wooden boxes with oil paints and I've been trying to figure out what the best kind of varnish is to use. I want a glossy look like the wooden cutouts in the pic I posted, how do I achieve this look?
9 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I often use wipe on gloss polyurethane, take your time and apply a ton of coats (like 10 or so) lightly sand with 600-800 grit every 3 coats just to remove any high spots or dust nibs.
That alone will get you a nice gloss, but for the best gloss let the poly cure for at least a week, then come back with some automotive wax and a buffer. That sumbitch will blind you when the light hits.

Is gloss polyurethane safe to use on oil paints though?

Hi diynosaurs, i'm actually working on a project that requires the use of a stepper motor, in particular i need to control the speed of the motor using an arduino uno. I've read that stepper motors need a dedicated driver to work and i was wondering if i need a particular driver or just the cheapest-random one. I do already have the motor and can provide the name if needed (i didn't find specifications of the exact model though). I was looking forward the easy stepper motor driver, but i'm not sure if that allows me to control the speed by the code on the arduino.
Sorry for my english, it's not my native language, thanks everyone for the help

>>
you see where it says Step Input. you put a pulse on there and it advances one step (equal to, let's say, 3.9 degrees) so, to control speed, you just put out more or fewer pulses. easy peasy.

You do need a "stepper" motor driver, or a motor driver board that can operate a stepper motor. There are also "brushless" (or BLDC) motors and DC motors, and those need different driver circuits.

If the motor is smaller and not put under much mechanical load, just any stepper motor driver will prolly work okay. If the motor is larger then you might want to get one that can put out some current. Can you show the motor or link to where you bought it?

If the motor is a nema 17 or a smaller nema 23, I tend to use a Sainsmart TB6560 1-axis driver.

The 3D printers just use little chip drivers (with no heatsinks) but these occasionally fail too. But Sainsmart has those also if you wanna.

I almost never wear hearing or eye protection. I just hate them since they muddle my senses and make me feel less safe, even though I know better. I just can't be bothered.

The only exception is when I'm grinding metal or when the operation I'm performing is throwing dust or other material directly into the face. Then the safety glasses go on.

When ripping wood I don't use a push stick unless the cut requires my hand get within two or so inches of the blade. Never had an incident. I took those worthless safety pawls off the table saw, because they obstruct my view of the cut being made. I leave the riving knife on, because I know that actually is important for preventing kickback, and it is no inconvenience to leave it be.

I utilize the step above the one indicated to be the last safe step if need be.

What shop safety commandments do you break on a regular basis?

Get better PPE if it gets in your way.

My safety glasses are scuffed to fuck, because they came from a dollar store. Better glasses wouldn't scuff.

I always wear safety glasses, used to it from my army days. I've got a nice pair of ICE crossbows that I don't even realize I'm wearing anymore. Came home from the shop the other night and forgot I was wearing them. The wife's staring at me across the dinner table like I have a dick on my forehead.

Ear defenders... Well, I wear over the ear headphones and jam out while I work, that counts I guess lol my bearings fucked from the military anyway.

Push sticks... I'm in that same boat with OP, pretty much don't use them until I need to push near the blade.
>>
I almost went blind because I had this same attitude.

I wear glasses constantly now because I can't see if I don't.

When i was a child my parents had a rocking chair which was completely made of bent stakes (willow i guess). it was comfy as fuck.

does anybody have experience making them? should i just start bending some stakes and knotting them together with wire or is there some secret magic i should consider before experimenting?

it looked kinda like the one in the pic but the rocking feet or how they are called were also bent stakes.

Steam softens the staves to a point of usability. Once they're soft you bend them into shape and let them cool & dry so they hold. Then you can use fine nails and banding to hold the furniture together.

I recently applied for two apprenticeships, one as a fitter and the other as an electrician. My Dad said that if I got the electrical trade once I was skilled that I should look to pursue more training in elevator repair or security system installation/maintenance because they had a lot of money.

I didn't get the electrical apprenticeship but I did get offered the one as a fitter. I want to know are there any kind of "specialized" fields in fitting like in electrical work that I will (later in my career) be able to benefit from moving into?

Security systems aren't that close to electrical in my mind. It's low voltage and a lot of shit work running wires in shitty conditions. Industrial/commercial electrical is a lot more fun.
>>
Fitter here. I'm a fitter and while I enjoy what I do, the upward mobility - especially while remaining in the field - is so much better for a sparky.

As a fitter though you can specialise in specific types of machinery, manufacturer specific and become an OEM installer/commissioning tech.
>>
>>921625

Installation teams for my family's security systems company are primarily low grade electricians. Because it is really just pulling wire and plugging in. The difficult part is neat and efficient installation which is where the electricians line pulling experience comes in.

Any programming is particularly basic and if there are unusual faults then one of the few actual technicians will break themselves away from their desk and do some field work for once if the system is not remotely accessible.

But definitely agree that Industrial and Commercial is significantly much more fun and also more lucrative when the work is available. Particularly if you are a heavy electrical contractor then you are involved in not just the electrical but can be responsible for organizing the whole installation, including directing excavators, cranes, concrete works and all kinds of shit.

It provokes you to more often solve problems and come up with (to an extent within code) your own solutions. Fitters seem to tend to primarily follow directions and schematics. I have a friend who is an electrical engineer but his companies bread and butter is generator installation but that alone has him traveling all over the western hemisphere and in many various fields (marine, industrial, commercial, residential, agricultural) and he doesn't just plug and play. He provides solutions.

Can we have this one?
Tools that doesn't cost as much as your kidneys on the black market, even tho they are good for hobby/day to day usage.

For example a good Fluke Multimeter costs 200$+, while you can get a so-so one from China for 50$.

Pic related - my multimeter bought from ebay for 40$
Good, fast reaction time on diode check, "hold" button just holds the current value on the screen (kind of pointless imo).
Doesn't have min-max which kind of suck.
Test leads are rated for CAT III for 1000V (20A)/CAT IV 600V (20A) and look like a good quality one (soft insulation, nice to touch probes, etc.) I wouldn't use it on more than 240V tho.
Comes with probes, leads with crocodile clips and thermal probe all in a decent zipper bag.
As you can see from images, chip on board IC, glass fuses, etc.
Powered by 2 AA batteries, event tho on the back it says it uses a 9V battery. I guess it cannot be made in China if there's no Easter eggs here and there.

Overall, serves me well for the meme low voltage shit i do at home.

If there's interest in the thread i can post more of my cheap gear.

It's y first time here. My father and I are renovating our upper and lower porches in accordance to the preservation board of our city. We're not that well off, so he has to do it himself, and I try to help, but I don't know a lick about this.

From what he tells me though, the people are trying to run a game on him. For instance, though he got permission to continue with the project, the board was 'displeased' because he didn't come to them for the okay, despite the fact that we would lose the house if he didn't, and if they said no.

Like I said, I don't know anything about this. I'm just going to try to help him draw up sketches and plans with my limited artistic abilities. Do any of you have tips for home improvement, or dealing with city officials and the like?

Apologies if this is the wrong board for this; he's intent on searching for the information himself, I am just trying to do what little I can and ask around, as he doesn't have any time to spare for it.

>>
>the board was displeased
sounds more like they were displeased because if you did it incorrectly you would have wasted your time, and if you present your project to them beforehand you will know if what you're doing is acceptable. So I would be displeased too, if I was on that committee given I have a conscious and wouldn't want someone to lose their house for a frivolous reason.
>>
>>926622
Thank you for your the comment. It's my understanding that they were displeased because, though he got the go ahead, he didn't meet with them with plans and such. Which I can understand.

I certainly hope they're as like-minded as you, and not the, admittedly, callous higher ups I picture them to be in my head. Though I have to reiterate, I am not the one doing this, my father is. I'm just trying to collect information to help.

Building officials are usually power hungry twats. I am an engineer, so they have no real power over me other than delaying my client's project. None the less, bend over backwards for them and make them feel important.
