Hey /diy/,
let's pretend you had a rusty steel tile (as displayed) at home and you wanted to make it part of a lamp for your wall.
The thickness of the tile is 0.5mm, it's made of steel and I want it to have holes. I don't care about the shape of those holes, they just have to be there so the light can go through. How do I get these holes into my steel tile? I thought about using acid, but something faster and/or cheaper would be nice.
Any Ideas? Thanks in advance.

Lately my quite life has been fuck thanks to my neighbours little kid. I am not entirely sure if it is the new couple living right from me or the ones living under me or both. I am not sure if it is the walls being too thin or all the cracks. There are even two outlets, one of them unusable and fucked. This room, my current bedroom, supposedly was a kitchen once so the rooms of my neighbours should be their kitchens too. I don't have a lot of money and I am not expecting anything, but I am very stressed at this point. If I wasn't socially retarded I would have talked with them already to at least keep their kid away from the kitchen and see if there is anything visible on their wall, but the fact that I am not sure where it is coming from and that they just might not care is stopping me. Online I read about using heavy curtains and even egg cartons. That would be a lot of egg cartons and I am not sure how good of a plan it would be.

Hello /diy/
I am but a humble desert dwelling third worlder south of the USA.
I am looking to nigger rig me a deep cycle battery solar powered UPS for my shitty workstation as to deal with the usual summer KwH price hikes that swarm us here.
Googled around but all I could find was get shit from Harbor Freight (Doable, since I live near the border) that costs a shitton compared to my humble coin.
How could I go into building something not so costly from OEM parts I could get from Alibaba?
I know almost jackshit about converting AC to DC or whatever voltages a PC uses and to not have it get fried on me.
If it helps, it's a shitty Asus Essentio Series desktop with the A8 chip/7470 GPU, 12GB RAM and a 325W PSU.
Tripcoding just for this thread.
Any pointers, amigos?

I've read that people switch to laptops to drastically reduce power consumption. That said, you need to determine how much power your system will consume & how long you want to run it. Also need to determine how much sunlight & size of array you will need to be able to refill your batteries to cover your needs.
You'll need:
PV's (size to be determined)
Charge controller
Deep cycle batteries
Pure sine-wave inverter.
Quick and dirty way is to get some panels up, wire them to the charge controller (as short of runs possible to avoid line loss), to the batteries, and a sine-wave inverter of at least 500 watts output.
I tried to run a 1.2 GHz AMD Athlon system that used 275 W off a 300 W digital inverter connected to a single 12V RV deep cycle/starting battery and it started acting funny. Plus the inverter was hard pressed to keep up. The cooling fan ran full blast on it and it sounded like a blowdryer.
Those dual use batteries are a poor compromise, they do a poor job either way. But I got them from work as surplus so the price was right, and I only wanted to experiment before committing to a pair of Trojan 6V deep cycle golf cart batteries.
Ideal method:
Monocrystalline type PV
an MPPT type charge controller
The biggest deep cycle batteries you can afford with fusing (short ccts and battery fires are scary as fuck).
Pure sine-wave inverter with low voltage cutoff. (lv cutoff will help protect the batteries from being too deeply discharged).

Sunlight exposure isn't a problem, we rarely get overcast days so i would not need to switch to mains power as often (perhaps at night if I do need to keep working.)

Looking at building a tiny house.
My girlfriends parents have a pretty large area to put it on on their property.
My main question for you guys would be what to do about shifting.
Want to try and avoid having to walk to the main house to use the bathroom.
What options do I have?
I know my work had a small septic tank installed under an office portable and honey bucket came and emptied it every couple weeks but I can't find out how much that costs or if they would even do that for non commercial buildings.
Any ideas or thoughts?

A separate septic systemfor your tiny house would probably cost more than the house itself (assuming you use used wood like many other timy house builders use.) And would also possibly violate that zoning laws that require a certain square footage for a residence. (Might try to twll you thag the house is no longer mobile.)
Many tiny houses use a wood chip composting toilet, which sounds horrendous in such a small space.

Ever thought of using a bucket with a seat on the top. You could make a proper frame in the house to make it look tidy. Then have stuff to scoop on top of it to keep it clean. Empty as needed.
Try checking out Kirsten Dirksens you tube channel theres heaps of awesome ideas on there along with a few dud ones too.
A big important thing about a tiny house is to not burn too much coin on it or else it starts to defeat the purpose.

For metalworking lathes you can get accessories called 'expanding mandrels'.
With those you could drill the hole through the beads, mount them on the mandrel and then cut on the outside surface... but I don't know if wood lathes have the same kinds of head stocks?
None I've seen did; they only had headstocks meant for grabbing pieces of wood.
I do metal tho, I dunno much about wood machines.
If you search for "wood bead machine" on google, there seem to be a number of small CNC ones that pop up in the results, aimed at the DIY crowd.

I agree with the belt sander, or a disc sander.
If you could find someone with a bandsaw that has a proper fence it would work too.
The cheapest and most accurate way would to just flat sand them.
Get sand paper, and a really hard flat surface. You could get a cheap sanding block too. Attach the sandpaper and just go back and forth till you get the bad heel flat.
Then you measure how much material you took off, and then sand the other heel down to size.
It may take a decent amount of time, but you are going to destroy them with an angle grinder.

Hey /diy/, so I just bought a house that I'll be moving into next month and was wondering if there are any good handyman books out there I can buy for home maintenance/repair/upgrades that I can do myself?
I'm not entirely inexperienced with hands on labor, I went to vocational high-school for carpentry, and have worked various landscaping and manual labor jobs in my youth. I've also amassed quite the number of tools in my time as my family and friends discount auto mechanic and repairman, so I'm pretty well equipped to carry out most work. But seeing as this will be my own home I'd rather not half-ass anything so having some good reference material on hand that doesn't treat the reader like some stay at home wife would be nice to have.
The house is a four bedroom ranch. It needs some paint/trim/carpet and flooring work to be done. The basement is also pretty shitty at the moment, nothing more than storage and washer/dryer. The backyard is also pretty large so I have some garden/patio/firepit ideas going on.
Do you guys have any good recommendations on some literature I can pick up that would suit this situation? Anything on home and garden stuff or more creative home upgrades would be cool.

I just finished restring and leaning this Tektroninx 502A, Im still waiting for 3 tubes that it has missing before I can turn it on for the first time after cleaning it,before it just made a dot, so the HV was there and it gaved some life but had missing 3 tubes and a transistor, now I dont think I will found a identical transistor so I will have to substitute it probably ,but its in the power supply so I ques it shouldn't be that complex
the missing transistor is a 2n214, with wat could I substitute it ??
Im planing on using this scope on vintage tube amp buiilds and stuff ...

If you're building amps, you wont really have much occasion to use it. I only have to fire up my scope to track down parasitic oscillations. Do the filter caps while you're in there replacing the transistor. Cool piece of equipment you have there.

I am repairing the crt tube, I mean the socket is lose so I removed it and there were 3 broken pins on it, any idea how to re-attach them back ?

I'm working on a side hobby involving streaming/recording and voice acting. Every room in my house is shoddy for soundproofing, so I can easily hear my family and they can hear me. I don't want to interrupt them, but I also don't want to hear them in my background noise if I'm recording or if I'm on a stream (normally I'd use Audacity but it's still noticeable sometimes).
I'm moving out in roughly 3 months, so I'd just like advice on any audio proofing materials I should look for that I can at least bring with me, in case the same problem occurs. Any ideas/products I should look at, roughly in the $50-$150 range?
Extra info, if it even matters: the space I am using is in my basement, and it is just concrete and drywall; it is also less than 7 feet vertically, around 13 feet in length, and above where I'm recording is hardwood flooring.

Lol. You might get some dampening but nothing spectacular. In order to be completely silent and vibretion proof, you need to create a floating room, where you have pockets of emptiness and soundproofing insulation surrounding the whole room so the noise that dips past your dry wall, sound proofing rubber, and another layer of drywall. Dry-rubber-dry-soundproof foam. For the floor you need to create a subfloor and insulate that. Qyality plywood and a layer of sound proofing rubber, then comes in the empty, your making a 6 inch gap of nothingness between the floor your sitting on and the subfloor. So you have a room floating in between a room with insulation. Then you foam it, bass traps. Or use egg cartons.lel

And if you can't. Get seinhesier hd598's. Theyre amazing for the price, sub 150. You get great low ends and high ends, very flat response. They WILL be underpowered if you don't hook them up to am external power source, i use an audio interface, my buddy uses logitech speakers that he can control vol and bass with. That's honestly your best bet to get the best mixes and be blast tunes you're making at high volumes without disturbing anyone. Good luck
