I'm thinking about buying a 3d printer, but my needs for eg replacement parts is minimal.
What about printing model kits? Is there any good source for them? I guess it could he possible to print the Pepakura kits from /po/, but what about "real" model kits, like anime, mecha, Warcraft, Warhammer, etc?
the output of a printer that you can afford will not be pleasing to the eye
>>1078120
In what price range are printers which produce acceptable results?
Also, I've read about the acetone method to smoothen 3d prints; won't that help?
Off topic question, but is it worth it to get cheap printer 2016 or just wait for some miracle printer? Also how expensive is the "basic" filament?
Sup /DIY/ so my computer monitor started fading-to-white/freezing over and I figured there were some busted capacitors - but looking at it everything looks pretty much untouched.
I can confirm that the DVI-D cable is fine since I bought another monitor recently and it displayed just fine which also accounts for the display drivers working correctly.
I've googled/reddited this beforehand but I don't get any direct answers to repairing it. - for reference I do have a soldering tool, wick, solder etc. all I figure I need to do is get a cap or other chip part and swap em.

ITT: Uncommon uses for the tool we all carry. The mighty Leatherman. Mod ideas also welcome.
Sounds simple but the back of the saw makes a fantastic ferrocerium rod striker.
I'm shocked at how many people don't realize the Wave and few others have a "hidden lanyard" ring.

I need ideas for a "futuristic" city project thing, kinda like in the picture (only more advanced). We are supposed to incorporate moving parts and stuff, things like fountains, wind turbines, spinning statues. Anything you'd like to suggest?

What would it take to make a kevlar morphsuit? Is kevlar even flexible enough to consider this?
>>1080870
Kevlar can be made thick or thin, single layer or multiple layers. The question is, what do you want it to protect you against? If we're talking rifle rounds, it's gonna be like wearing a brick wall. If you just want it to stop minor shrapnel, sure.
>>1080873
I'm thinking prevention for wolf bites, so I can be the alfa dog of my own wolf pack. Try to start domesticating certain animals that need physical dominance- foxes, small bears, etc. I would also like to experiment with layering up certain spots and bonding with resin, make a sort of custom full body armor suit. The questions is, how thin does it have to be to maintain flexibility, and what degree of protection does that provide?

You'd be better off with chainmail, no lie
I have a telescope that I want to mount a rifle scope on. Astronomy telescopes usually have a secondary telescope or something to get it pointed at what you want to look at, as the field of view of the main telescope is too narrow to just use that. The problem is, the finder sight that came with the telescope is dogshit.
I have a number of rifle scopes and sections of picatinny rail, so I was thinking of making something like pic related. Does anyone see any reason why this wouldn't work, or ideas how to do it better?
On the telescope mounting there are two points which I'd like to use as the mounting points, in the pic. One is a short section of threaded rod, and one is a hole, both with 1/4"-20 screw threads. I was thinking of getting a section of aluminium bar and cutting it into the shape of the red part in the picture. That would be held in place by a thumbscrew which would thread into the hole, and the blue bit which threads onto the threaded rod, which I already have. I could then bolt the rail section onto that.
I'd be using aluminium because it's softer than steel so should be easier to cut, as the only power tools I have are hand drills and a bench grinder. So I would grind the majority of the material away using the grinder, then finish it off using hand files.
>>1080699
I only see one question here. To answer it, it would be easier to use a CNC. To be honest, you could use wood, as you don't have the issue of recoil to deal with.
You could also just buy a somewhat thin steel, drill 4 holes, weld or screw or bent your assembly to the needed shape, and get going. Your aluminum will look like shit anyways, after cutting by hand.
My money is on creating a wood version, at least as a trial.
>>1080718
Sorry if I worded it poorly, I meant to ask if anyone could figure out a better way of mounting the rail. It would be easier if I could unscrew that threaded rod but it seems to be in there pretty tight and I don't want to break it.
And would bent sheet metal be rigid enough?
why do all that work when all you need is a piece of straight aluminum ( 1/2" wide x 1/8" thick x however long ) and some washers/nuts as spacers between the aluminum and rail. theres no need to do all that grinding
what can i use to improvise bottle caps for two bottles of vodka with no caps that i will carry in a luggage. the main thing should be that i need them to be 100% water-proof and not leak even a little bit
>>1080687
buy two more bottles of vodka and use their caps
>>1080687
Just jam an old rag in the top, I see people do that all the time.

i could do that if i remove the little plastic ring that reduces the volume of the flow of liquid, but i'd prefer to use something as a CAP
My keyboard got this dysfunction after two years : my "s" key doesn't work anymore I'll get more into details. It doesn't come from my end since every other key is ok, I'm not the type spill some juice of my keyboard, etc. Plus I've got a friend with the same problem. So if you ever want to be a portable computer : The asus R510L is cool and chill for casual work but the s key will mess up after some time.
I'm not used to do myself this kind of things but I need to fix this. What should I know about these things and how should I work ? I've already tried stupid shit like cleaning it and putting some folded sheet of paper but the space is made just right so the sheet of paper just slips from the sides and can't do good, maybe sticking the paper but I don't know about that yet.
What would be your advice ?

> inb4 azerty keyboard le fagget

Thanks for not answering /diy/ you virgin
Let me at least tell you how I fixed this :
> The plastic thing kinda like a pole in the center of the key
> Get the key out, look for the center of it and glue a little bit of glue on in
> stick a firm but thin layer of plastic under the inner side of the key
> the rubber part can now easily reach the s key and it goes deeper to touch the circuit when pushed
> the s is still rarely harder to push than any other key but it's working 9 times out 10, I figure it's a temporary solution
Any other plan would be nice
>>1080478
I would buy a new complete keyboard and replace it.

Im looking to build one of these im a carpenter by trade
I know id need a 1/3 hp motor and a potentiometer and ill make the rest of the pieces
Im wondering if any engineers have made anything like this before and tips for building
>>1079679
I assume you want to adjust motor speed.
You need an appropriate 3phase motor and a matching variable speed drive.
I have no idea what your picrelated is or what is its intended use, so it might be a good idea to describe what and how it does it in order to get better advice.
>>1079689
Would be simpler and easier to use a belt drive with stacked ratios to change speeds unless he needed on the fly changes.
>>1079679
>I have no idea what your picrelated is or what is its intended use
THIS
Google image search says it's a potter's wheel, but you should have just told us that.
I assume you need smoothly adjustable speed.
Harbor freight sells a "router speed control" for $20 that should do well for this.
How the fuck do you get motivated to make shit?
I have a garage full of tools and tons of time. I'm lacking ideas, but mostly motivation. Nothing can seem to get me to do anything.
A couple times a week I'll find a little motivation and literally sit in my garage in front of the workbench and just stare at the wall. Sometimes I'll organize shit. I just can't seem to make anything.

Welcome to the life of most men. No ideas, no money, not the right tools, no space, take your pick.
I force myself to make music one day a week, even if I have zero ideas or inspiration. Sometimes I sit there from 7pm to 4am, sometimes I give up at 10pm. It's never good, nothing I make is ever good, but I keep trying. Why? Who knows.
>>1078591
>How the fuck do you get motivated to make shit?
I go through phases.
If I find myself sitting in the garage with nothing to do, I will stay out of the garage for a month or two and do something else.
I never lack motivation, it just changes on what I feel motivated to do for a while.

Jeweler here. Working on a silver ring right now with some neodymium magnets incorporated into it. Once I'm done, I want to patina it but was wondering if the liver of sulfur would affect the magnets somehow.
Also general jewelry thread. Pic is of a pin I made for Dishonored.
>>1076672
I don't have much.
>>1076669
All I know is that Neodymium can react with moisture, while ferrite can't.
Why not use Ferrite?
>>1076678
Or if you do use Neodymium, seal the cups you put them in with some two part epoxy, that generally resists chemicals pretty well.
