I have an aircraft alternator. Would it be stupid to try utilizing it on like a static bike to use it to charge anything?
>>1082137
What size is it? It'll probably be useless with anything less than 800 rpm (assuming it's similar to your pic)

Why the fuck do you think this would be good?
How many of you jerry rigged something with safety wire for a project? Let's hear them!
>>1081950
theres a briggs engine somewhere around here with a hole drilled through a connecting rod bolt and safety wired to another bolt on the oil splasher thing. i forgot why i did it
>>1081976
Perhaps you didn't want the bolt to the oil dump thing falling out?

oil sump*** my bad
I'm in the process of setting up multiple aeroponic grow systems. I want to use an arduino to monitor each reservoir for ppm level, ph level, temperature and control the pump timer. In turn making that data available on a website that I have access to.
I have basic programing skills and a good amount of experience working with circuitry/general electronic based fabricarion.
My quistion is if this is even possible and how difficult would it be to compile the code for each sensor and a single pump controller into the same arduino.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!
>>1081887
I've got my eyes on this one, I'm planning an automated garden in my garage with some similar concepts, it doesn't seem too intricate save for the relays to get my repurposed sump pumps and the dryer heater element to regulate water levels and air temperature
>>1081887
Drop arduino and use raspberry(or any equivalent) instead. It will save you a huge amount of time inventing things like tcp socket on arduino which is incredibly easy on raspi. It have 3.3V IO ports which you will never use all and is capable working with various SPI components which youll find libraries for (for example MC3008 8port adc). You may even use odroid which already have adc on board. Good luck...
>>1081887
holy shit anon, are you me ?
>bump
wiring is fairly easy bud, however I think that it'd be a bit difficult to setup a code with an arduino that can do that,
I strongly suggest you use the Blynk platform for its simplicity and that you use arduino with builtin wifi, it will save you a lot of time, since I have an arduino nano that I tried attaching to ESP8266 (basically wifi shield for arduino) and it was a pain in the ass.
my aeroroponics is basically just a styrofoam box with a 3$ 5v dc chinese pump from ebay, the arduino sleeps and wakes up every minute to spray for 6 seconds, uses very little power.
I don't plan on using sensors and shit since it's indoors and I'm still in experimental stage.
I suggest you get yourself some TIP120 or FQP30N06L instead of relays, saves energy and less likely to fail,

We give away BILLIONS of colors in foreign aid every year. We are giving just Israel 3.8 billion a year for the next 10 years.

>hire Americans to install along the border
That wasn't very hard...
Hey /diy/ have any of you ever built a rocket for a project or competition? If so, what was the process of creating one?
>>1079668
me and my brother made some shitty homemade rockets out of rocket candy cardboard and some bog
about one in twenty worked the rest just fizzed out we probably made 30 or so rockets all of different designs
the ones that did work were quite amazing though reaching close to a kilometer vertically
I got a 2 liter bottle, taped some cardboard wings on it and a little parachute. My teacher filled it with water and pumped air into it until it flew up. 9.8/10 would make again
Look up rocket candy.
Potassium Nitrate and Sugar make a great rocket propellant. Its essentially the DIY standard for rocket making. I recommend using thin walled PVC pipe (cpvc) or even thin copper/steel pipe.
My mixer stopped working, so i opened it up and found the gears are quite worn out (pic related). Now i romoved the parts and i want to replace it. I could either 3D print it, or order it from somewhere. My problem is, that i do not really know what I am looking for. What is the name of such a gear. And where could i obtain a printing file from?
It's a Phillips HR1570/71
That's the gear i am talking about
>>1078807
you're not printing that unless you make the file yourself. it's a worm wheel/spur gear combo likely made of acetal.
you're more likely to run into and pay less for a working one at a thrift store
>>1078810
This.
It's already around $40 just for a suitable material to print with. And that's not taking into account the hours you spend making the model and the tweaks you'll have to make to account for shrinkage

Using pic related means you don't have the right tool for the job.
Prove me wrong. Tell me something this is the perfect tool for without a purpose-made alternative.
And before someone says "gripping pipes"
Nope, for that there's this.
How about a tool for when you can't bring 3-4 different ones you dumb shit. Do you take your whole shop everywhere you go?
>>1076347
Hydraulic pipes. Like brakes on a car. Those buggers strip all too easily on an old rusty piece of shit. Then I use one of those. In general rusty bolts on cars. Stripping sucks.
Questions that don't deserve their own thread thread.
So, my neighbor cut down an old tree of his to make room for a fucking 10,000 lbs lift. Super fucking bad-ass, but besides the point.
He gave me the wood from the tree, and while I wanted to let it sit for a good long while in the shed so I could use it for firewood, my wife is insisting on using it for seating in the backyard. She said, "just seal it and set it out there."
>Okay, baby, you got it
So, how would I have to treat some stumps to sit in my backyard and endure Colorado weather?
pentacryl or just paint with latex paint and put a damn pillow on top so you dont get a taint splinter

>>1076062
Might want to just set em in your shed and wait till next year to start the project. Especially if the tree was still alive when it was cut down
Heyo, /diy/ first time visitor. I've been looking at pic related, and the first thing that came to mind was how feasible it would be to create and sell them at the flea market for a quick buck or several. Or maybe the mall, who knows.
Anyway, I've looked up some basic how-to on dealing with epoxy and setting things, but I find anything about the fog effects, and can't think of how it's done personally. Trying to search about fog or smoke effects in resin brings up weed.
Pic related, to the left.

Thread I bumped off the board, sorry.
>>1074500
maybe it is just another colored resin, in this case white, ''brushed'' through with something thin, perhaps a needle maybe
>>1074500
I thought about getting into doing this resin stuff. Looks pretty cool, and your pic makes me want to do it even more now because I love wood working. Combo of the two would be pretty cool I think.
Anyways, I did some quick research on your behalf OP, and as usual it took a matter of two minutes to find relevant information.
You want to mix alcohol ink into your initial resin batch, and like >>1074504 said, you're going to use a tooth pick or needle to achieve your swirl effect.

I've been struggling to make right angles with my dad's 40 year old radial arm saw for a long time. I hate to think I have to spend a grand on a table saw to do simple things with any precision at all.
How crucial is the equipment in making shit correct? Is it really so impractical to try with sub-professional equipment?
Shitty tools will yield shitty work. Similarly if you're unskilled and too incompetent to google "how to square a RAS" you will produce shitty work undoubtedly.
You don't need a power tool, you just need A tool you can use competently.
>>1083891
Is it a Craftsman radial arm saw? They were made by Emerson and are generally considered to be poor machines when it comes to maintaining accuracy. On the plus side, they were recalled for safety problems and you can get $100 if you live in the USA and ship them the carriage. You might be able to buy a decent used saw for that. http://www.radialarmsawrecall.com/
DeWalt and Delta made good radial arm saws. They hold their zeros well when calibrated properly. You can find how to do this in the manual. They also can be had for next to nothing. Post your local Craig's List and I will have a look and see if their are any good radial arm saws or table saws in your area.
Picture related. Real DeWalt tools were blue or green.
Radial arm saws never stay in square. Get a good compound sliding miter saw if you want more precision.
Get a table saw and an Incra miter gauge if perfection is required.
Hello, artisans. Let's build a NEET winter helm! : >
So, let me rephrase it in more detail. To begin with, we don't need it to be sturdy like those helms designed to save your life in an accident, this makes the project much more accessible. And we can make a frame with thick wires, which will allow one to restore his creation after possible incidents (eg an alfa on campus/work can try to copulate your helmet with his swollen from blows head bone). On the other hand there are a number of interesting tasks that challenge the venture. Firstly, the defeat of fogging and freezing of the glass is usually made possible with sealed gas layer between the inner and outer glass, however it somehow brings a tall entry barrier into our amazing helmcraft. Secondly, it is not very clear even how to have a normal breathing deflector, or your dear OP is too unfamiliar with the necessary skills for this.
Why am I doing this? Somehow current weather at my places freezes my skull. And in January I will probably have my teeth freeze against my cheeks. Also, my lashes used to freeze together less frequently, now this happens critically often. And putting on glasses and be wrapped in scarves like a Mujahid is not an option, because it interferes with breathing in the sense that it hits the immune system, no kidding, really I have to breathe all this cold air right through the nose.
Maybe I'm not the only one with such circumstances or at least I'll find some practical advice here. Let the thread flow!
P.S.: I'll back up nice stuff to neethelm at tumblr, so I don't think I have an excuse for a tripcode.

k, right, even at -20 °F there can be relevant clothes, but consider the following
>in January I will probably have my teeth freeze against my cheeks
>my lashes used to freeze together less frequently, now this happens critically often
That's more like a job for a snowmobile helmet.
>>1083801
Balaclavas are a thing, but rib-knit ones might get you in trouble depending on your location. And they don't save you from real cold.
