Guys I have to make dessert for like 60 people. Any recommendations? It would have to be simple, economic and tasty without looking cheap.

This thread is for posting your favorite shows not necessarily about cooking rather shows or movies that are about food. Pic related is a great documentary about how Chinese food has been influenced by American culture.

>great documentary
That's a bit generous.
>>
>>7493631
All I got from that documentary was the Chinese think they invented fortune cookies and the actual inventor of General Tso's chicken is a Taiwanese guy who thinks the Burgerland version sucks.
>>
>pretty interesting documentary
>oh they have a recipe for chicken on the website
>specifically calls for non GMO ingredients
and just like they they have invalidated their entire platform

Can I ferment soda into alcohol?
19 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Awesome question and I reckon you can. Holy shit someone must try making soda wine.
>>
You probably could but it'd be a far from optimal environment for the yeast, so even if something happened I wouldn't expect any substantial level of alcohol to be obtained.

Shit, the main reason I'm doing this is so I can mix some Mountain dew and Dr pepper I won in a raffle to do mad shit with. Still, worth a shot.

What are other uses of dill except fish? In my country i can only think of traditional non-fish dish where it is a main ingredient (a kind of meat stew wth dill and vinegar). I've tried using it in other stuff it doesn't really fit in anything that i've made.

I put it on salads and potatoes.

Herb your chicken with it. Better yet, herb the chicken with dill, cut up some lemons and throw it all in the pressure cooker.

I really like the flavor of gochujang, but i have issues getting it to mix into things well because its so viscous.

Best way to thin it/mix it in without messing things up? Ive tried mixing it with a little bit of hot water but only works for some applications

Is this the sort of thing you'd want to use for a stir fry? There's this thai resturant near me that has a dish called chile paste noodles, and I want to try and make something similar. Sorry I can't answer your question.
>>
>>7493296
are you saying either or both. Cause that kind of makes me want to try both.

>>7493300
Yeah i use it in stir fries pretty often, take a good spoonful, mix with a little hot water and pour over.

What would be the difference between a slow cook in sous vide and slow cook in an oven at the same temperature
18 posts and 0 images submitted.
>>
>>7493079
Precise temperature control.
>>
The point of a sous vide is to bring food up to a uniform temperature throughout

In an oven, the convection heating would make that extremely slow, so you use higher temperatures to accelerate heat transfer and therefore create a heat gradient in the food
>>
>>7493084

Yep. Most ovens have horrible temperature stability, especially at low temperatures. The point of sous vide is accurate control of temperature in a range that's below most oven cooking.

How does /ck/ feel about hot dogs? Are they childish? Normally I eat pretty well but I just now made the most basic hot dog ever and it has a certain allure. Plain bun, Hebrew National dog I grilled on a panini press, plain yellow mustard, ketchup, and dill relish. It isn't mind blowing or something I'd want all the time but I'm a little surprised how good and fulfilling it actually is.

All you have to say.

I generally hate hot dogs.

I will eat Hebrew Nationals over decent quality brats.

I'm planning to buy a Himalayan salt block for my dad as a birthday gift. Is it actually a good cooking method? Do any of you have one? I'd like to hear some opinions.

>Is it actually a good cooking method?

Depends on what you mean, really. Can you cook on it? Sure. Is it anything special? No, not really. It's no different than cooking on a rock, thick metal plate, flat pan, or griddle except that it adds a tiny bit of salt to your food.

The eggs don't get all over and into everything, unlike the cold ingredients.
>guy comes in
>asks for no lettuce
>comes back and shits on everybody because there were a few flakes of lettuce in his taco
>his daughter is "allergic to lettuce"
there's lettuce in fucking everything because of how they have bins you're supposed to reach into, grab a pinch, and pull it out. there's lettuce in the cheese, cheese in the lettuce, onions in the tomato, etc, etc

Why is lengua considered cheap when i can only find it at like 10-15$ a pound?
Am i looking in the wrong places? ive checked a variety of markets and butchers and 10.99$ was the cheapest i found

it was cheap, now that eating organ meat and off cuts of meat are a meme the prices are up
>>
>>7492432
$10 a pound is cheap though, for meat that's fit for human consumption.

Anyone who eats CAFO shitmeat by choice ought to have his head examined. For prions.
>>
I remember when stuff like ox tail and beef shanks where dirt cheap, like, 2$ a lb max. Now everyone is all about "muh marrow bones" and "muh stews" so theyarked that shit up way more than its really worth.

Fuck I miss my ox tail and root vegetable stew and my braised beef shank

what are /ck/s specialties?

like, what are the dishes you've made so many times you've surely perfected your methods? the ones you know so well inside and out that you couldn't possibly fuck up if you tried, that you can bend to any situation or any flavor profile?

personally, my "specialties" are:
>cookies (any and every kind but especially good chewy cookies, fuck your crispy or cakey bullshit)
>bread pudding
>pie (especially the crust, family recipe)
>steak served whole as an entree
>salmon steaks or fillets
>tuna steaks, ahi a best
>sauteed asparagus, brussels sprouts, green beans (each has their own unique flavor profile)
>sweet potato (ESPECIALLY in casserole!)
>roasting a whole bird like turkey

also, I'm gonna list some things I wish I was better at, and maybe someone else can come save me with one of their specialties.
>chicken breast
>spinach, artichoke, beets
>shrimp
>pork

pic related: a beautiful rare tuna steak by moi.

You better not put marshmallows on your sweet potato.

fuck no I do not
that is children's shit
I can give you an amazing recipe for a sweet potato casserole that people will be hesitant to try and later beg you for the recipe after they've eaten the entire dish of it, if you're interested. I should enter that shit in a contest somewhere.
