I'm going to get dog and my main contender is a border terrier. Any anons with experience with them with some knowledge to impart? Good choice or no?
Context live in the highlands of Scotland so it's a pretty weather appropriate breed I think.

I know some people who have them. My thoughts are based purely on those specific dogs.

They go absolutely batshit when they see people coming up the walk to the house. Once you're inside and they check you out they are very friendly and happy dogs. They love playing and bring toys over all the time.

Seems like you are really interested in their functional coat. Imo it's their worst feature by far. It's coarse and wiry, almost sticky to the touch. It's a shame because the dogs are friendly but I try to avoid touching them. Sitting on the couch with them is like snuggling a wet dog scented trash can lid.

>inb4 the owners don't groom right

The owners groom them frequently, but almost any outdoor exposure in our humid area turns them into stink factories.

I guess you could groom frequently enough to mitigate this, but with the coarse hair they will never feel soft or inviting to the touch. It's certainly up to your personal preference but not my cup of tea breedwise.
>>
If only there were some MAGICAL website that you could enter questions and topics into and it'd give you dozens of existing articles. If only there were dozens of dog websites dedicated to describing different breeds. And we can only PRAY that breed-specific websites with information on the dog you want will exist in the distant future.
It's just a fantasy though; there's no way any of those things exist.
>>
It is a good dog. I think you should get it.

What can I plant in the place of grass that won't get destroyed by chickens? My yard has pretty weak grass and dry sandy soil, so the chickens have turned everything in their enclosure to loose dirt. I'm moving them to a larger area and I'd like to plant grass or something similar that is hardy enough not to get fucked up. The area is about 1500 sq feet.

trees qualify as plants AFAIK

I don't think trees are gonna work as a replacement for grass.
>>
you have to rotate the areas they have access to so they can destroy one while another recovers

I have two cats that are now 20 and I'm 18. They've been in the family since before I was born and they have always been my best friends since I moved around a lot. Tiger helped me learn how to walk and Mr Black cat always protected me while I slept, I was a paranoid child and often woke up screaming. They were always there for me and constantly stayed by my side. When they hit their older years it my turn to take care of them and they were grateful. I just moved across the country and left them with my father. Now they'll wonder why I never came back. They'll constantly expect me to walk through that door and I never will. They'll wonder what they did wrong and why I left.
I just wanted to get this off my chest, I'm so sorry guys I love you forever.
They'll most likely die before I can get back to new york. My dad told me tiger can't walk and black cat is getting skinnier. They'll die lonely. I hope you guys can forgive me I'm so sorry.

I'm sorry. I felt so bad going off to college without my cats or my horse. When I finally could afford an apartment and moved out of the dorms, the first thing I did, I got my cats. Couldn't take the horse with me which I regretted every day until the poor old guy had to be put down (wasn't holding his weight no matter how many calories we fed him).

They forgive you, it's okay.

What is a weed that can
a. Kill Grass
b. Spread fast, and
c. Grow fast
The place I work said to not walk in our grass. They want the grass to grow, as it is newly placed. I want to grow a weed there that will spread and kill the grass with it. (a) is the most important.

any clinical psychologist can tell you the easiest way to kill grass is by not being such a fucking nutjob and toxic worker you piece of shit
>>
>>2114199
>i want to fuck up the hard labor of numerous blue-collar workers just so I can go "um, technically i'm stepping on the weeds"
Try making your own synthetic weeds in the garage.
Just get a fistful of dandelion seeds and put them in ten gallons of bleach. Then wait ten minutes and pour in ten gallons of ammonia. This will supercharge the weeds and make them wreck any pesky grass. Good luck!

Hello /an/, /k/ here.

I come here in the hopes that you can help me prevent my roommate from murdering my other roommate's cat in a fit of rage. He has been angry with the cat, the cat doesn't like that, so the cat pisses in odd places (including on his things, including his shoes and printer).

Some backstory: Last October, one of my roommates (A) rescued a kitten (female) and we agreed that he could keep her in our apartment. She's been good up until recently, when she went into heat. Rm A hasn't had the cat fixed yet because she was so young when we picked her up, and because he's poor and couldn't afford it around Christmastime. He's since set up an appointment to have her fixed. Roommate B on the other hand has anger problems that he refuses to see a doctor/take medicine for, and presumably the cat didn't do his exact bidding at some point like a dog would, so he yelled at the cat. The cat pissed in his shoes.

This has set off a vicious cycle and Rm A and I are afraid that Rm B will hurt the cat. She pissed in his printer (he left it on the floor in the living room, Idk) and he threw such a legendary shitfit that our mutual friends are avoiding him. Today, the cat hid his contacts and peed in the bathtub, and he went nuclear, screaming at the cat, the whole nine yards.

My question is, how do I fix this issue? I have some money that I would be willing to throw at the problem, because I like the cat and I don't want her to be harmed (she helped me through my brother's suicide last year, on top of me just generally liking animals I guess). She has an appointment to be fixed, and I've heard that there are cleaning products that will remove the urine and discouraging the cat from urinating in the same place. My lease doesn't go up until August, and I would like to keep everything together until I can leave his psycho ass.

Well your roommate is doing the right thing by getting her fixed so that should help and a good cleaning should fix. Your other roommate needs to either see a doctor or leave because he is clearly dangerous to not only the cat but possibly you or the cat owner.

>our other roommate needs to either see a doctor or leave because he is clearly dangerous to not only the cat but possibly you or the cat owner.
This. I'd kick out the other roommate in a heartbeat. Anger issues are absolutely not something worth dealing with if the person won't get help.

If he won't leave, take a video and call the cops/landlord next time he really blows up and say you fear for your and your animals safety.

A blacklight will help you pinpoint the exact location of any cat urine. Works great. Wait till dark, shut off the light, use blacklight. Cat urine will fluoresce under blacklight. You'll need an extension cord probably, to search everywhere. Buy some Nature's Miracle. Get the spray bottle and get the jug refill. Saturate any cat urine with Nature's Miracle and allow it to air dry completely. Works great on cat pee. When I first met my now-husband, fifteen years ago, he had a Siamese cat who hated me on sight. Took her a couple of years to warm up to me (jealousy issues) and in those couple of years she did pee on my leather coat, my shoes, my backpack, my pillow, "my" side of the bed... Nature's Miracle was a lifesaver.

the CDC study you're referring to is full of holes, and I'm pretty sure they even stated on there that BSL would be inefficient to stop or even significantly reduce dog bites, and that a dog of any breed can exhibit aggressive behavior

Which would be harder to do when hunting purely for food?
Pulling the trigger to kill an animal
Or
Butchering the animal

I think I could kill an animal with the intention of harvesting its meat to feed my family and honouring its existence by not letting any of it going to waste, but my only hang-up would be butchering it.

I always have a sense of sadness at killing a large game animal but thats out of respect and any hunter thats not a psycho will tell you the same thing.

My neighbor has two pit bulls. They are kept outside in the back yard 24 hours a day. I've never seen (well, heard, as we're separated by pic related) the neighbor interact with them beyond the occasional yell to stop barking. When he got dog number two a few months ago, the pooch cried all day and night for weeks. I was tempted to call animal control just to check on them. But I moved here only a year ago to the warm Southwest, from the often cold Midwest, and I figured that keeping dogs outside was just a part of the culture here that I didn't understand.

Today that changed. From inside my house I suddenly heard horrible, LOUD noises of the dogs fighting. My husband and I ran out to our back yard, stood on a bench, and peered over the fence into the neighbors' yard. One dog had the other pinned on its back, biting at everything, while the pinned one remained still. We yelled and tried to get the aggressor's attention to break it up, but he was deaf to us. Of course the owner wasn't home to do anything, he rarely is. After a minute or two, the attack was over, and the pinned dog continued to lay still. He eventually got up five minutes later, with blood visible on his face.

I called animal control and gave them the neighbor's address. The officer was very kind but explained that animal control was not legally allowed to go in the neighbor's yard. Even if an animal is abandoned in a yard when the owners move, all they can do is toss food and water over the fence for 10 days, when the law finally lets them intervene. Ten days! All they can do is swing by the house tomorrow and talk to my neighbor if he's there. If they have shelter and water in the yard, then there's nothing illegal going on.

Did I overreact? Did I not do enough? I desperately wanted to help the injured dog, but if ANIMAL
CONTROL would have been considered trespassers on the property then I sure as hell would have. The officer also explained that dogs are considered property in my county. So if I were to whisk the dog away to get him medical treatment, I would be a theif as well as a trespasser. I highly doubt the neighbor will care that his dog is injured, might not even notice. I don't want the pooch to be in pain, get an infection, lose an eye, on top of his already obvious loneliness (the aforementioned crying for weeks). I doubt the neighbor will be home when animal control swings by there tomorrow, and they already told me they can't go into the yard without permission. The fuck do I do, /an/?
>>
You didn't over react and unfortunately you can't really do anything further. Even if you were to steal the dogs, they would just get more.
>>
Call animal control and say the yard next to you has pitbulls that are fighting constantly and you're worried for your own safety.

Nah I have a house with a yard, and since there's a basset rescue in my area I can judge on personality too.
Do they bay less or more than bloodhounds? I know they do what's called grumping when they're upset, do bloodhounds do that too?

I want to get a kelpie but I've read they are very dominant dogs. How do I make sure that they perceive me as the "alpha"? What must done I don't want a dog stepping all over me kek

I've got a border collie/kelpie mix. Training helped a lot but she will still do her own thing on occasion. Great dog, otherwise. Not super affectionate but a great friend nonetheless. Wish we had a farm so she could do her herding thing, when shes bored she digs and destroys stuff.
>>
you got a farm, nigga?

otherwise you should just adopt some poor bastard who needs a good home for like 20$ at the local shithole shelter.
>>
>>2113000
I don't really consider them dominant. Smart and energetic yeah, a dominant one would probably depend on the individual and where they were in the litter. I have a girl and she's more headstrong then her brother which is normal with bitches.

In general, don't be a pussy or a push over. Train it to stay before coming for food. Train it to let go of a toy during tug of war and get them to sit to get it back. Teach it to heel.

Definitely get it desexed, for a myriad of other reasons as well. Especially if it's a male.

Hardest with my kelpie was solid recall at the park. You'll never outrun one so getting it to listen to you is a must. Also reconsider a different breed or a kelpie X from the pound if you don't have time to spend on a working line kelpie because it will destroy your garden, furniture, jump the 6ft fence and fuck off if bored if left outside alone a lot. Yeah they're nice looking dogs but they were bred to herd all day.
