What are the best farm animals to own as pets? no birds or goats. ty ty

Pigs.
Cats and dogs.
>>2116942
My friend moved to the country and got a pig. It's a 350lb wrecking ball that doesn't care one bit about being friendly, in fact it's an asshole. Maybe not all pigs are that bad, but this one sucks.
If you have a 6ft fence for your dogs and neighbours kid kicks a soccer ball over the fence and your dogs pop the ball. Would you feel obligated to replace the ball?
What? No.
It would be a nice gesture.
Are you the creepy old man in the neighborhood that no one ever sees and all the kids are scared of?
Would I feel obligated?
no
I'd still probably do it if the kids werent little shit heads though.

Recently ordered some black soldier fly larvae to be used in composting. I've researched them and have become fascinated in using them to convert organic materials into a food source.
Anyone else do this type of stuff? I also have some red wigglers to create some high quality compost and tea. Looking for some other species to do useful things with.
>>2116866
Here are some of the juvenile larvae that are at a life stage able to be fed to livestock like fish, reptiles, chickens, etc.
>>2116869
And the red wiggler worms that i'll soon have for my composting. they produce high quality microbe fertilizer and "worm tea"
So a few weeks ago i noticed one of my hens was limping. I picked her up, and there weren't any apparent injuries. She wasn't bothered when I moved both of her legs around, and the next day she was walking normally. When i came home today I noticed she was limping again, still no apparent injuries, and she still wasn't bothered when I examined her legs. What could be wrong with her? The limp isn't as bad as it was last time, but it's noticeable. I don't want to be ignoring a major health issue. I've been giving them a varied diet of standard feed, and lots of different edible plants. She's the only one who's been limping
It looks like it's her left leg she isn't putting weight on.
Take it to a vet.

If growing up watching cartoons taught me anything, then there's a thorn in her foot. Pull it out and she'll instantly become your best friend.
I found this bird while walking and i thought it might be a pigeon but it's a bit smaller than a pigeon and it looks different than the pigeons in this area. It was pretty chill and when i walked up to it, it didn't fly away but i think something was wrong with its beak so it might have just been malnourished.

Looks like a mourning dove
I always thought they were morning doves. Instead of mourning. The more you know!
I keep seeing these blue birds with an orange belly. Birds scare the shit out of me, but these ones are really pretty. What kind are they?
>>2116722
Probably a bluebird, either Eastern or Western.
You gotta post where you saw it, because range is a huge factor
>>2116727
I live in MA so it was probably Eastern, right?
>>2116733
If it's a bluebird, it's an Eastern. Michigan is in its breeding range, and its that time of year.
It's tricky to tell from the picture, but is this your bird?

There was once a time when having an "AKC" pet meant something. People came to expect a certain level of quality and sophistication associated with the acronym 'AKC.' An AKC puppy still carries a much higher price tag (at 30%) over a dog without AKC registration ... now they allow mixed breeds to be registered, charge stupid amounts of money for made-in-china merchandise, and spam your email with with shit from their 'partners'.
What happened to you, AKC? You used to be cool. Now you're just another shameless web merchant.
Somewhat related
A purebred Burmese Mountain dog, only 5 months old, came into the local shelter the other day. It had actual pedigree papers and AKC registration, and because it's a shelter the most they could charge for it was like $150. I'm very worried someone will adopt it and turn it over for a couple grand, because around here that's what that kind of dog is worth. At least it will be fixed.
But yeah AKC no longer equates to a good breeder. In fact, in some cases I would say it may be better having a dog that isn't up to snuff with the AKC guidelines, or a breeder that refuses to register their dogs with the AKC over conflicting views in breeding practices. As far as I know, as long as your dog is a pure bred, it can be registered with the AKC (no requirements as far as fitting the standard goes), so I guess it wouldn't necessarily hurt. Right now I think the AKC is still better than the Canadian and Westminister unfortunately. In the end they are all pretty shitty.
>why is the organization made for giving people a false sense of superiority from their pets doing this??
money, like always

If you have any control over the situation, you should try to get the shelter to turn the dog over to a strict rescue. There are ways that you can track the adoption of a dog through the microchip and there are some rescues that will keep track of the dog that way, and if they see you rehomed the dog they will come after you.
Of course, if you don't modify the chip info after the rehoming, they won't know, but who would pay a few grand for a dog and not make sure the microchip info is accurate in case they get loose?
However, burmese mountain dogs aren't really used for illegal purposes, like fighting, and if someone is willing to pay a few grand, hopefully they also have a pretty decent home. Maybe some douchebag will make some money on the situation, but I doubt the dog will end up neglected and tied to a tree, ya know?
Hi anons. 4 days ago I purchased a little puppy 4 mts old. Today as I was doing her daily exercise outside i saw it run under the porch. I went under to check why it would leave in such a hurry since it usually wants to play 24/7. When I went under porch, I saw her chewing her bone but also saw a coolant bottle. It was open and had a puddle of coolant next to it on the cement. The puddle was very green and it did not catch the puppy's attention. I tried looking around for a chewn bottle cap but could not find any. I have no idea how the bottle was opened. It had 0 chew marks. IDK what to do idk if the puppy drank some. She has been outside for 4 days with LOTS of energy. I know its fatal but I can't confirm whether she drank. ==((( I put some coolant on my fingers and put it around her nose to sniff but she did not try licking my hand. IDK if she drank any :(. I know its 100% fatal.
Go to a fucking vet.
>>2116246
Just return it to the store and get a new bottle. Tell them that's how it was when you bought. Works every time.
As far as the dead dog goes, you could try returning it too, but they kind of frown upon that I've found.
Why do so many people have cats and dogs when most people can't even take care of a fish or hamster? They can't bother to buy a 5 gallon tank and filtration system for a fish, and if they do have these things they have a bunch of fish crowded in it instead of the one or two fish that should be kept in a 5 gallon tank, and putting hamsters in hamster tubes and not providing the 10" or so of burrowing space hamsters need, and these are just basic necessities for these pets that the vast majority of owners fail to provide
People don't regularly empty their cats litter boxes, and instead of playing with them or walking them they just let them outside to be a pest to everyone in their neighborhood and probably get hit by a car
People don't properly train their dogs, causing them behavioral problems and also fail to play with and walk them as often as they need. Most people free feed them cheap and shitty kibble too instead of food that's actually good for them
Why are most pet owners so shit?

>Why do so many people have cats and dogs when most people can't even take care of a fish or hamster?
I own cats, dogs, a hamster and fish.
the fish are by far the most difficult of those four to care for.
just sayin.
also, if you think a 5g tank is good for any fish you're somewhat misinformed.
>>2116198
theres nothing wrong with a 5g for a betta
>>2116202
there's also nothing particularly right about it.
9 months old black husky, black eyes. Would you say she was a full breed?
Also she was a small puppy
>>2116100
"husky" isn't a breed.
Sibarian husky is what I think you mean. I'm not an expert but she seems to be to me. But I'm sure some other of the guys on here could tell you for sure.

ITT we post fun and surprising facts about animals
I'll start
Despite its large size, an elephant's brain is roughly the size of a grain of sand.
Not unless the grain of sand is verylargeand weighs 11 to 13 pounds (5 to 6 kilograms)! Contrary to popular belief, theelephant's brainis not small. In fact, it is the largestbrainof any land mammal. It looks like a humanbrain, highly folded and convoluted with distinctive lobes.
>>2115414
A grain of sand, by definition, can not be that large.
>>2115413
wow OP, just like your penis then
Hey guys, I have no pets but I always loved dogs.
When I go out to run, I usually spend a few seconds letting dogs lick my hand. They usually let me massage them too. Today I was touching a dog (pic related, the one of the white fringe), and he performed the order "shake hands".
Is this normal for a stranger?
>>2115399
.... When in France, a dog didn't respond to my calls or platitudes then in realised I was in France. It liked being spoken to in French ya see, ou a la bon chien, etc. He went nuts.... Completely unrelated story
>>2115399
.... Anyhow yep this is normal as long as the dog has been trained to be friendly and to not be threatened if you invade it's space. I know of a man who would beat up his dog with a golly wog doll to make it attack black people. Obviously he was a racist, and not my friend.
>>2115399
Its natural for dogs to paw at people especially through a gap in the fence its not really shaking hands.
My dog however would sit staring through you 2 metres away from the fence carefully calculating the threat. Your warning would be low growling and a bark that sounds like muffled coughing. If he is barking loudly he is simply telling me there is someone here and they are no threat.
