>live near dad's house
>he got a new pupper recently because he's stupid
>everyone who lives with him is too lazy to do anything with it
>whenever I visit it gets super excited, probably because I'm not old or unhealthy, and keeps trying to play with me
>have no idea what to do in that situation, it doesn't let me pet it, just hops around and barks and licks my hand and stuff

What do you even do when a dog wants to play like that? Chase it? Grab it? I always end up just sort of standing there awkwardly and then going about my business. Pic vaguely related.

Take your hand
Move it to your thigh
Slowly lean in towards the dog
And bark loudly
>>
>get on hands and knees
>charge and headbutt dog

It's really easy to mimic how dogs play with each other. He'll playbite your neck and you'll try to push him into a wall, it's great fun.

Just don't do it with a pitbull, they'll draw blood or ruin clothing.

How does /an/ feel about crate training?

my gf is getting her first dog on sunday and she wants to crate train it. We live in apartment in the city if that makes a difference. I grew up with pet dogs and my parents never crate trained any and they turned out fine, can anyone redpill me on this method?

>>
>>2111158

I don't crate train, and I'm not super keen on it. I don't really understand why people are so nuts about it. I like that the pet has a place it feels safe and can go to, but I don't really see how that is any different that training a dog to go to its bed.
>>
my dog is crate trained.. i used to use a crate regularly but not so much anymore since i have a bigger place with rooms and i'm home more.. i still think it's important for all dogs to be comfortable crated because they might end up in an emergency situation at the vet or a shelter where there aren't any other options

i also take my dog on my motorcycle and on occasional flights so he needs to feel comfy and secure in his 'bag'

i HATE when people abuse the crate though.. don't use it for punishment or as an alternative for socializing and interacting with your pet
>>
I consider crate training essential but many people abuse it. I work at a vet office and you can always tell when a boarder has never been in a crate before because they go apeshit, hurt themselves trying to escape, and stress out in a kenneling environment. So there is the perk of your dog being relaxed when confined for periods of time.

It's also super helpful for housebreaking a puppy or confining them overnight so when you're asleep you know they are safe.

I leave my dogs kennel open all day with her bed in there. If she gets sleepy or wants a break from the household she'll go in voluntarily. Otherwise I only put her in overnight for about 6-8hrs before letting her out in the morning when I wake up. It's very helpful for car situations as well.

Is it fair for cities or states to ban certain breeds?

My state has made it so cities can't ban certain breeds.

Yes. It's unfair to ban a lot of things because of a small percentage of people.

I think there should be background checks for certain breeds.

I'm currently watching:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eskkf7LIw5w

And I'm trying to wrack my head around what exactly could be done about the issue of overcrowding shelters.

Obviously, improving the public perception of strays would increase adoption rates, but that alone couldn't fix this issue, right?

These shelters are overflowing their capacity and having to put down dogs constantly, just to make space.

What exactly would help solve this issue?

I'd like to open an unorthodox shelter later in life and I'd think it would be interesting to have a cage-free shelter with an obvious segregation of social, need training, and sick dogs.

cracking down on BYBs

making it mandatory to pay (a small fee) for and pass a test and receive a license to own a pet

making it mandatory to pay (a large fee) for and pass a test, receive a license, have a letter of recommendation from a veterinarian

mandatory spaying and neutering if you wish to own a pet, with exceptions for only those who have a letter from a state-approved veterinarian

those found violating these laws must pay exorbitant fees; three strikes and they are banned from owning a pet.

I hear stairs are not good for dogs, which means I have a problem as you need to climb at least a 2 meter high stairs to even get into my house, and then you to get to the floor I spend most of my time you need to climb another set of stairs.

Now, is it true that stairs are really bad for a dog or can I get around it by being careful? I don't own a dog yet, but I have been thinking about getting one for a couple of years and have been learning about how to keep one, but if the stairs thing is true the only way I'd be able to keep one would be if I get a tiny one I can carry, or keep it outside at all times, which really isn't something I want to do.

>>
It's not advisable for a puppy who is genetically prone to hip dysplasia to use stairs frequently.

I don't think there's any real problem with young or adult dogs that are done growing, though.
>>
My dads dog (Cockapoo) loves stairs. Runs up and down them all day for no particular reason.
>>
>>2110890
Well I see my brother's dog do stairs easily as well, but I am afraid it still hurts it.

>>2110889
Do you know if this affects bigger breeds more? Boerboels are my favourite breed. Do you think if I take it slow with them up and down the stairs I could keep it from affecting them?

I live in Nashville, TN and this morning I found this tiny brown garden snake in my house. Very rarely do I find insects and vermin indoors so I was quite surprised. I coaxed it into a cardboard box and let it outside in the backyard.

Now I'm curious what kind of snake it was. I did a bunch of searching and the two likely candidates are a eastern corn snake or a milk snake, but the markings don't look quite right. The snake was about the thickness of a pencil and about 12 inches long.

Can anyone help me identify it?

Not deadly, looks like a corn snake almost
>>
>>2110828
Thanks, I figured it was harmless since it was so small and didn't look like a copperhead or cottonmouth. At first it wasn't moving and I thought it might be dead, so I poked its tail with my finger and it moved suddenly. I have two cats in the house and didn't want them sniffing around at it though, so I scooped it up and dumped it in the grass.
>>
Nearly impossible to tell between a milk snake, corn snake, or ratsnake at that age unless you have a local expert on that particular genetic strain.

Basically, since milk snakes are a bit more rare and cornsnakes are just a red ratsnakes. I say it's a rat snake until proven otherwise.

I've got a 3-4 month old kitten who I'm not sure is ill. Her gums are a bit pale, as pictured, and she gags out of nowhere followed by shivering. And yet, she eats and drinks well, her eyes and nose are clear, she's playful, and her breathing seems to be normal. She isn't at all lethargic. What do?

1) wait it out and see what happens
2) take it to a vet
2.1) if you can't afford a vet right now then ask about payment plans

What should I use to brush my puppy's undercoat? She's a 9 months old golden retriever.

I've been using one of these combination brushes that's slicker on a side and bristle on the other, not much hair come on either, but she's still shedding all over the house even though I brush her 2~3 times a week.

http://www.furminator.com/Products.aspx

I've heard personally from a friend that her furminator is a godsend. Takes care of shedding, makes her pup's coat super smooth, feels amazing.

Only thing is, she warned that when this product first came out, people used this tool so much they didn't realize that it would bald their pets. It has a small blade within the prongs that takes care of the shedding undercoat, so you have to be careful to not overuse it, otherwise your dog will end up with a little bald spot.
>>
>>2110762
FYI she's a golden retriever.

You can brush and brush and brush and they'll still shed.

Yeah, I saw this, and that a bunch did cut hairs.
I've also seen a bunch that look like small rakes and have retractable pins that do not look like they cut hairs. How well do these work?

One of my canary eggs started hatching today, but it's been hours and the baby still haven't gotten out of the shell.

I can't imagine manually opening an egg that's already cracking open would be the end of the world. Just expect to get your fingers wet in bird fetus goop.
>>
>>2110747
Is the humidity high enough? Is it being incubated artificially or by a parent? Hatch time is when humidity MUST be high enough or the sticky membrane inside the egg will dry out after the shell cracks and glue the baby into the shell.

Guys, my cat got reaaaly fat all of a sudden and she has been fixed. Is she going to die?
27 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Take her to the vet and find out twat.
>>
1. Take to vet and rule out medical issue
2. Switch to canned or raw food only
3. Don't free feed, leave food out for 20 min then pickup, split daily allowance into 3 meals
4. Have 2 solid play sessions a day, preferably before meals. Cat should be panting by the end
>>
Are you sure she got fixed? Could the person you got her from or a shady vet have lied to you?
