Hey /an/, can you identify the breed of this doggo? Just took him from the shelter, they told me it's a cane corso/labrador hybrid, but it is registered as a pitbull. Sorry for the bad pics but it's all i have, don't want to bother him now that he's sleeping. I'm not that good with dog breeds so help is appreciated.

Shelters register 99% of their dogs pitbull mixes. By the look of the body and head shape, I'd say that dog has very little to no pit in him. Definitely has those lab ears and head though.
>>
Muscular for a lab mix but body shape other than that strike me as lab.

Thanks for the input, it actually was a vet that classified him as a pitbull, but the shelter guys (and almost all dog people i know) say that the vets in the area aren't really top shelf... Here's another pic

I am starting to regret getting a dog. It has led to arguments between me and other family members. Anyone else on /an/ feel like this?

I don't regret it, but I have had my arguments.

Usually it's
>no I don't care if your little mongoloid is allergic or afraid I'm not putting the dog outside or in the bedroom
>he's more a member of the family than you, and this is his house too
>if you don't like it leave, or better yet fuck off and die
>>
I spent a good two minutes looming at that picture wondering if that's my sister or not.

But no not really. At worst me and my three siblings fought over who the cat and dogs get to sleep with.
>>
>>2110017
I've fostered dogs that led to arguments and eventually having to bring the dog back. My suggestion is if it's young or a puppy, re-home it now because it will only get much harder to re-home when it's even one month older.

Why do people get cats as pets, /an/? Literally every cat owner I've encountered can't keep their house or personal belongings from WREAKING of cat piss.
I'll always get a small whiff of cat-stench from the cat-owning customers but then as soon as I enter into a customer's home--I immediately know they own cats without even needing to see one. It's absolutely awful and completely outside the universe of stench that one can "get used to"... except cat owners, something about their pseudo-masochism draws them to the fetid aroma.
Its gotten so bad in some people's houses that I've had to drop my work, just to go outside, and vomit. This has happened so much that I WILL NOT do any work in a house that I consider vomit-tier anymore and I have no problems telling customers exactly why.
>inb4 nuh-uh, fegget, awtitstick, j00, i into cats n my house dont smell.
To you it doesn't because you're mentally ill. You just can't hide it and I don't care how clean you think you are, cat-owners; your house smells like cat piss, so do you, and it's disgusting.

After a few years of being unhappy at the concept my boyfriend is finally letting me get a pet. No rodents, no cats, however. He hates them. Apartment also doesn't allow reptiles, my other option.

In particular, he wants me to get a shiba due to their personality (wanting something independant but not a cat), plus they're small, but I know the breed has its personality and I don't have much experience with dogs. He's stubborn at the thought of me getting any other kind of dog/puppy even from a shelter, when I really just need animal company, not a breed.

There's also the fact he keeps pushing back getting the dog to afford a shiba pup, which is making this all the more troublesome.

The fuck do I do?

Because he's got anime figures everywhere and saw how my amazing cat back home got turned into shit with my aunt's teaching.

I love her, but she'd hold my cat until she yowled then let her go, making her into this yowly little thing that didn't like contact instead of my quiet little cuddler.

Also not allowed by my apartment (just like my last option of rabbit), shit sucks. I'm even limited by dog breed to anything not "intimidating" (GSD, doberman, pits, etc)

perhaps you should get a new boyfriend instead of a new dog

“What type of snake is that?“

Can anyone help with some unconventional way to get a 2 lb chihuahua to stop peeing and shitting all over my house? I've tried what the vets say, I've tried what the pet stores say, I've looked online... next option is rehoming her and hoping a stranger has more luck with her than I did. She has been peeing and pooping on the floor since I got her last August. It's gotten worse instead of better. I've had several dogs and never had this problem. She also has a clean bill of health so that's not the issue.

How old?

You've done you're reading, so you know it could be damn near anything.

First thing to do is wipe every inch of the floor and steam clean the carpets with an enzymatic cleaner, otherwise he will think it's fine because it smells like it already. You read this, I'm use.

Now what you didn't read:
Second is to use negative reinforcement. Vets and hippies say the only way to is to shower them with treats when they go outside - and that's good, but unless you can pick the dog up mid-stream (which makes a terrible mess, btw), they won't understand that going inside is bad. And using that redirection means you have to be Johnny-on-the-spot all day and be ready to grab him. If you're in a recliner? Too late. Don't bother. You'll never get to him mid-stream.

See, that's a problem with that method. They say if you don't catch it within 5 seconds, to just walk away because hope is lost. I call bullshit. I've housebroken 3 dogs, and all of them could make a connection between the spot they peed on and them getting scolded hours after the fact.

Know what I mean? If a dog only knows that going outside is good, it's not stopping him from going inside if he's stubborn or just doesn't want a treat.

I usually make a bunch of ruckus (yelling "DID YOU DO THIS?! x5) while holding the dog NEXT to the puddle (not in it, huge difference) and generally roughhousing him, but not in a way that hurts.

So now they now outside is good, AND inside is bad. Not just undesirable, but fucking bad. BAD DOG!

If you're dog is already housebroken and just being an asshole, it should only take about 5 times before he knocks that shit off.
>>
>>2108596
This guy knows what's up.

There's also to be something said for rubbing their nose in it if you catch them in the act and scold them.

Dogs don't like shit in their face any more than people do so i've used this to train no less than 5 dogs.

Mostly though I don't have to resort to that unless they are being openly defiant.
>>
Did you rescue this dog or get it as a puppy? What sort of training and socialization have you done with her so far? So you have a routine or irregular schedule? Is it just you handling the dog or are there other people? Its hard to recommend any specific technique without any other background on the situation.

Most difficult dog I've housebroken was a miniature dachshund who are notorious for being stubborn. The key for her was crate training and making a routine that I stuck with, and it still probably took almost a year to be fully housebroken.

Hey /an/.

I'm wondering how many of you have an animal related job, and if you actually make a living off of it?

I'm in a shitty place wondering what the hell to do with life. Because, my whole life has revolved around animals. Ever since my first memories of 3-4, I've loved helping animals and learning as much about them as possible. I breed reptiles, and rats currently. And I've helped with provincial projects reintroducing and breeding endangered species. But that was purely volunteer.

But there are no careers that haven't been raped, and are too plenty of too make a living from, or require substantial debt to crawl from after.
My ultimate goal is to help animals who are actually in need, or breeding programs. Ever since I was a kid barely out of diapers I was always in awe at rescue shows, but those are purely volunteer as well.

I've worked my many years at minimal, and I'm starting to really hate that I haven't done anything substantial with my life or career.

Get a good, professional, business job and then just volunteer on the weekends.

Doing anything in veterinary medicine or 'helping animals' is soul crushing.
>>
>>2108108
This. Also if animals are your passion, it's not something you want to make a career out of, because you will come to hate it. It sucks all the joy out of it in the long run and is not worth it. I made my living in the horse industry for 10 years and it nearly completely destroyed my passion for these animals and desire to be anywhere near a barn. Thankfully I got out before it was too late.

I dunno, I'm trying to be a marine biologist since I have a passion for the ocean. I've still seen marine biologists that are still really passionate about the ocean and their fish after years in the hobby.

Is it okay to ask this here, or should I take this to /adv/ or something?

Basically:
>neighbors are idiots with aggressive dogs
>no fences or anything, not tied up, etc
>their biggest dog has bit at least one kid in neighborhood, and bit neighbor's cat, who required surgery for this
>neighbors called animal control regarding attack on cat
>animal control doesn't give a shit, tells them to call them again if the dog bites their toddler or something

What do I do? These people clearly don't have the common sense to fence their dog up or something, and we can't have the dog attacking more children, cats, and other dogs...
