I've been playing drums for 15 years, guitar for 12, piano for 8 and I've messed around with lots of other instruments.

Anon, what you're describing comes with A. Time, and B.Musical theory knowledge, more so the former than the ladder. Keep practicing your scales, keep noodling, keep learning songs by ear. Eventually when you hear something you'll recognize that as a pattern, shape or arpeggio you've learned and you'll be able to replicate it, reaaaally far down the road from now.

Music theory teaches you the relationship between notes and the how and why of the changes within styles. Most music follows a conventional theme and as a result you eventually learn to recognise what the next notes or chords have to be in order for it to follow convention. You stop seeing all of the notes and you start seeing only the ones which make sense and you put yourself in the shoes of the composer and make the choices you believe they would have made based on your experience with their music and the genre. You also stop seeing every option as what position must I play in and develop an intuitive sense of higher or lower and based on where you start the tonality and the likely key you just do it. You predict the minor section and eventual resolution to the major section. You know the solo is noodles in the relative minor. You realise that it is basically a faster no woman no cry or something.

i went through a depression with mutulation of myself as well as a couple of attempts.

The thing i noticed which really helped me is to keep myself busy with daily things. Every tiny step helped me to regain faith and confidence to take a bigger step.

I don't think that i can honestly say that i'm <cured> but i feel less worse than how i used to feel.

Another tip; go outside and enjoy every piece of nature you have. If you don't trust yourself because of suicidal thoughts, feeling not well), skip the outside part and make a as much as possible comfortable place for yourself.

Try to listen to music or reading a book. Helping yourself to distract could help alot

Yeah man I went to uni, got a degree in mathematics, then decided to go work on a farm. It's been four years and I really like this work. I might go back to academia because I have developed a lot of skill in mathematics and put a lot of hard work into it, but there's never a rush. I'm leaning a lot about myself and others along the way. What's important is that you feel like you're growing and developing as a person and that you're making a contribution to the society around you. Not everyone takes the same roads, and not all roads are meant for everyone.

It's not like you aren't allowed to return to university at a later time. A lot of professors comment that the older students are often the best ones because they are more disciplined and directed in their studies.
