>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks. /hwg/ doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to very specific games, so this thread isn't tied to a game, or a genre, lets talk about fun wargames.

Any scale, any genre, any company, any minis. Skirmishers welcome. Rules designers welcome.

Mighty Armies, Dragon Rampant, Of Gods and Mortals, Frostgrave, Hordes of the Things, Songs of Blades and Heroes, Freebooter's Fate, Dark Age and anything that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread (gorkamundheim).

Strictly speaking we kind of already got the voodoo doctor.
Northstars 'Africa!' and Congo range might have some useful pieces to that end too.
And Foundry has a section of Pirates and Swashbucklers which also contains some really useful pieces to fit into the Archipelago setting and into the other figures of the Northstar range.

It was a longstanding tradition of Star Trek to make alien cultures and mysterious galactic phenomena represent issues which concerned the Americans of the time (or at least Gene Rodenberry). In particular, everyone knows the great Star Trek villain factions always seemed to stand for some real-world ideology, concept or philosophy which, taken to a ridiculous extreme, could be frightening (or at least, in the early days, to real-world countries which threatened America).

If Star Trek were to be invented nowadays, with the same principle but no previous background to adhere to, what alien civilizations and strange phenomena might the Federation encounter, and what real-world issues would they represent?

In my defense, this is to gather ideas for a game I intend to run using Traveller. It won't BE Star Trek but it'd be close enough in idea so I thought this experiment might fit. We all love Star Trek, might as well use it as a baseline.

Huh, turns out Micheal Straczynski looked into doing about the same thing a couple years back. He wanted to reimagine Star Trek completely as a "character driven hard science fiction" series. Interesting.

Something something sexuality, religion, bodily autonomy, racial tension, economic concerns, religious/ideological extremism, and uncertainity in the face of changing technology.

Frankly it's the one thing I despise about Star Trek how the humans are somehow above all of those things somehow. You can't convince me that someone won't try to lie, cheat, steal, and kill their way to a position they want or that people can't be petty assholes or that every human somehow falls in line without question. The last part gets me because so much could have been done with the Maki but instead they are made out to be misguided humans who had to be show the light of truth that is the Federation.

That and how under used the Borg are just making them stupid evil all encompassing force.

How would you fit the Jedi Order into your setting?

How would you stat the average Jedi?

Star Wars already has a perfectly good pnp game. I'd just use those stats.
>>
>>51537404
For standard D&D I just make them a monk subclass.
>>
In Legends of the Wulin the Jedi are already pretty close to the Heaven Sword Alliance.

And a friend of mine actually went through and made External Style stats for all the key Lightsaber Forms. 'External Style' being LotW parlance for your standard fighting style, as opposed to Internal styles which are more active techniques and special abilities.

Although the Star Wars RPG systems are good, I have always liked the idea of using LotW to run a force user only game of high flying space wuxia.

Originally from >>51500500. I'm storytiming this because I want to do it justice.

Before I get to the campaign itself, let me give you a quick rundown of the main characters involved.

First, there’s our leader, Ron. The best way to describe Ron is that he’s basically Gordon Ramsey (right down to being a chef), but a Burster, and he’s mostly leader by merit of being the first person to step forward and speak on behalf of the group.

Then there’s Fiona, who I’m pretty sure is a MARS build. She specializes in magic and psychic powers, but she’s also the closest thing we have to a healer/jack of all trades. The person playing Fiona is also quite a bit younger than the rest of the group, so she tends towards “random” behavior during plot advancement, but it’s never to a point where it’s disruptive.

Next there’s my character, Ingrid, another MARS character. Ingrid’s whole schtick is that she punches things, because I drew on anime and characters like Ragin’ Reggie Dempsey when I was building her. Nothing terribly remarkable about her at face value—she’s dumb as a brick, but has a very strong sense of justice and desperately wants to be a hero.

Finally, there’s Ghost. He’s a little weird because he’s the stealth guy, but he’s also a decently powerful Ley Line Walker and most of his combat abilities are centered around summoning. Ghost doesn’t show up until later, after James (who I discussed here >>51504157) got booted from the group, but he's worth mentioning.

Our tale begins in Eden, a town in Indiana that sits right in between Tolkeen and the Coalition’s territories. We’re all having a pretty normal day when a meeting gets called to discuss a supply caravan that hasn’t shown up on schedule. The people need those supplies since it’s getting pretty late in fall, so the towncouncil loads us up on an ATV and sends us to go look for them.

What happens next is summed up in James’s story, but to be brief, we find out that the Coalition has captured the caravaneers and taken them to a sort of frontline base they’ve established near Eden. This is strange and more than a little alarming, since up to this point there were Coalition troops moving through the area but nothing to suggest something this big, but right now we’re more concerned with saving the people they’ve taken prisoner. So we go to check out the base and not only is it crawling with soldiers, but they’ve got two guys in SAMAS suits (basically flying power armor) and an enormous mech patrolling the perimeter. Even worse, there’s very little cover between us and the camp’s walls, which are heavily reinforced so we can’t just blow them up and break in.

James, being the scout, does a little looking around while the rest of us try to come up with a plan, and he eventually spots a pack of these velociraptor-looking dinosaurs living in an outcropping not too far from the camp. Smarts check reveals that they’re “springtails,” which are mostly harmless if left alone but become highly aggressive if someone enters their territory. This is when Ron has an idea.
>>
>>51536659
The party waits until the dead of night to approach the camp. Ron breaks away from the rest of us about halfway down and starts blasting fire into the air to get the mech’s attention. It works like a charm, and now he has to run, which he does… right into the pack of springtails. With the mech distracted by the raptors trying to claw its legs off, Ingrid boosts Fiona and James up onto the top of the wall (it’s thick, but it’s not very high).

Fiona immediately jumps down and starts raising hell, throwing icicles everywhere and generally surprising the fuck out of the guys currently patrolling the area. James is taking aim at one of the SAMAS suits, both of which are currently unmanned for the night.

Thanks to our previous efforts at gathering intel, we know two things about these suits: that there are only two of them in this whole camp, and that the ammo drums mounted on their backs are highly explosive. James hits one dead center and rolls so high that he turns half the camp into a crater, vaporizing both the suits and most of the enemies in the process.

Amidst all the chaos, Ingrid climbs over the wall and casually punches open the door to the enclosure where the prisoners are being kept. By the time she’s finished freeing them and hoisted the one who’s been rendered insensate from torture onto her back, Fiona and James have cleaned house. Ron shows up at the camp’s gates driving the ATV and tells everyone to get in—apparently the mech is done fighting its way through the springtails and is headed this way. We narrowly escape getting mowed down by the thing and head back to Eden.

There are a couple other things in this campaign worth mentioning, but it's a pretty long read. Anyone interested?

alright so here's the situation i'm faced with (and i don't usually come here unless i need help badly as a new-er DM)

a player wants to make something like a half-fiend (not 100% the sit but you know. player confidentials) and a half other thing where they get a BUNCH of racial bonuses.. and the player has already asked for a bunch of items out of the DMG and other D&D editions... how can i, as the dm, make this so it doesn't happen...

ps: still a shy DM for some things not having come across certain issues.

You say no, unless all the other players have similar requests, in which case consider saying yes, and running a stupid overpowered anime campaign.

(also note that as long as you are playing by the rules, like 90% of templates and monster races are fucking trash tier and are going to do more harm to the character than good).
>>
I am playing mostly by the rules as much as i know how. the players all kinda have a -as long as it's playable and ask the DM so i can say yay or nay- i said okay to the character and told them if they abuse the bonuses and stuff that i reserve the right to "put on shelf"
>>
>>51535157
Sounds cool, but 3.5 is a complicated system that's easy to get wrong. For example, half the people I know use Level Adjustment for monstrous races wrong; they are usually far more than enough to offset the benefits.

So, is the player, with LA counted, still in the good level range? Are the magic items he's asking for according to WBL? Are the other players also similarly kitted? Do his thematics clash with the game you are trying to run?

Anyone have any experience with players who constantly port characters from old games into every new one they join, or the kinds of players who make loads of random characters without even having games for them?

I'm not sure why either of these seem like red flags to me but they do, especially the latter of the two. Any thoughts? If you're one of these kinds of players, why do you feel like doing that? Is it laziness, an attachment to a specific character you don't want to let go of, boredom, what?

IMO it's not really a problem unless the characters are bad pic related. Some people really enjoy making characters and some don't like leaving their roleplay comfort zone; the point is to have fun so neither of these are inherently bad.
>>
>>51533767
I do the latter a bunch, mostly when I look at character art threads because I think up characters to the pictures that strike my interest.
>>
>>51533767
I have a treasured story about that. Not from a game I was in, but a game a friend was in at our college gaming group.

Girl had a super special half-merfolk bard character she liked. Or maybe it was a regular merfolk, whatever.

Point was, she tried to port this PC between every game. Including ones not appropriate to it. And had some detailed backstory about her boyfriend and being a princess or whatever the fuck It doesn't matter. The point is, she's putting her speshul waifu in everything.
She joins a first level game. Makes a half merfolk bard because that's the closest she can get to her character with this GM (who didn't let her make the 5th level character she *assures* them it all is).

In one of the first few sessions- possibly even the first- they encounter a river. Half-merfolk bard goes, "Oh, don't worry, it'll be no trouble at all!" moves to enter the river. Realizes she doesn't actually have a positive strength modifier. Rolls like, 4 on swim.

Begins to get washed down river, drowning.

The rest of the PCs, at least one of whom is moderately martial and another of which has rope, just stand there and watch her. They *could* risk their lives swimming for her. Trying to save her. From her own decision to wander out into the center of a river.

But...

I mean, really...

It's been like, six or seven years, but that one always stood out to me as basically being as perfect as you could hope for; there was no practical way to improve on the series of events.

How to I make a spooky as shit dream sequence?

Let me explain what's going on. A few month ago, the party defeated their first major boss, a mayor who was also a wizard and secretly the leader of a cult. Rather than killing him, the decided to cut out his eyes (because he tried to cut out the face's eyes), cut off his hands (because he successfully cut off one of the necromancer's hands), and cut his tongue (so he couldn't cast spells). At which point, the face said something along the lines of, "he's useless now. He's not a threat." Then he looked across the table and idly challenged me to have him make a return, and promptly forgot about it.

But I haven't.

So while the party's been off hunting werewolves and such, the mayor has been brewing a spell. My plan is to use (read: fiat) Pathfinder's occult rules to suck them into a veiled mindscape, so that they don't even know they're in a mindscape. My plan is start have it start very mundane (such as, it's a foggy day), and slowly get more and more bizarre and surreal (you open the door and find yourself on the ceiling).

So how do I spook the shit out of them?
18 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
>So how do I spook the shit out of them?
You can't spook them unless they're in the mood to be spooked.
That's a general rule of spooking, but your medium leaves very little to work with. So it's extra apparent.

What I'd do, is routinely ask them for Will saves.
Maybe ask for a whole bunch of Will saves in a row, once they start asking about it.
Passing the Will saves is meaningless. When they do, tell them something feels off.

And just... keep asking for saves. For the whole session.
It won't spook them, but it'll get under their skin.

The advantage is obvious: they protect your shoulders. A lot of modern body armor covers the shoulders. There's no reason to have pauldrons so big they hinder your peripheral vision like in WoW or Warhammer, but those are inteltionally stylized cartoons.
