V4 so far:

SHOOTING:
- Shooting - either MG or Main Gun
- Shooting at Aircraft - similar to TY
- 8 inches for AA safe zone
- Like in TY - LoS to Aircraft can never be blocked
- terrain like in TY - either tall or short
- 2 inches from the edge of terrain you can see normally outside but you are concealed
- teams in upper floors of buildings see teams outside in buildings not concealed, even in short terrain
- No HE is now +1 to shoot against infantry and guns
- After shooting on Aircraft in enemy turn, apart from no def fire and shooting and assaulting turn after, you may NOT be GtG until the end of enemy's next turn
- When you rotate to hit, you can rotate the turret OR rotate the whole tank 90 degrees
- shooting through smoke is only +1 to hit
- your hits must be assigned to the same type of teams and 6 inches within hit team
- Man packed gun teams and light/medium guns are now 3+ save
- Heavy and Immobile guns are 4+ save
- Aircraft has it's own save now - 3+ usual and shooter needs to pass FP test to kill it
- passengers in destroyed transport retain their usual save - 3+ or 4+
- Everybody get mission tactics
- Warrior save is now 3+
- Unit with 12 or more teams at the start of the shooting step need 8 hits to be pinned
- Commander morale reroll to every unit that is within 6 inches of commander and has LoS
- Flamethrowers do not run out of ammo!
- Breakthrough gun is now re-roll to save, not instant fail
>>
ARTILLERY
- Artillery - you have only 1 Observer, other units may spot depending on army
- May not fire artillery bombardment if you attempted to dig-in!
- aiming point may be on the ground, anywhere observing team can see, no need to put it on team
- No more double width template
- You only have three range in attempts for one observer team, if you range in on first, you may give the rest of range in attempts to another artillery, with penalties for second and third range in
- you hit on enemy rating
- 5 or more guns get reroll to hit
- Staff teams are gone, so everybody have all guns repeat!
- Change to Artillery FP and AT rating depending on wherever you hit infantry/gun team or tank:
on Infantry (older FP/newer FP) - 1/1;2/2;3/3;4/3;5/4;6/4
on tanks (older AT/newer AT) - 6/3;5/3;4/3;3/2;2/1;1/0
- Repeat bombardment may be with different spotting team
- Infantry and gun teams need to re-roll saves when under Repeat bombardment!
- 1 Smoke bombardment per game per artillery unit
- LoS through Smoke is blocked unless you are within 6 inches, otherwise +1 to hit

ASSAULT
- More or less like Team Yankee
- Teams on small bases got +1 to hit in assault
- Infantry choose how to hit tank - top armor against TA2/FP1+ or side armor against any AT weapon you have.
- Shurzen is now Side armor 5 against At weapon with 5 or 6 FP
>>
National rules:

Germans
- Stormtrooper: All German units can now attempt a second, different movement order after succeeding at their first one.
- Tiger Ace: +1 bonus to Last Man Standing and Remount tests; the remount bonus stacks with protected ammo; Formation Commander tank team w/ Tiger Ace rerolls all failed to hit rolls with main gun
- Protected Ammo is now just a +1 bonus to remount checks (remount 4+ becomes remount 3+, etc)
- Begleiter tank escorts now add +1 to vehicles machine gun ROF when target is within 8"; reroll missed hits in assault; get defensive fire against infantry teams sneaking up against tank.
- Stuka zu Fuss: fires like heavy rockets (has to skill test to get full salvo markers or wait a turn, etc); fires large templates
- Reich Divided and Kampfgruppe are gone.

British
- Bagpipes: designate unit in company command that is not 1iC; all units w/in 6" of bagpiper require an extra hit in the shooting step/assault step to become pinned down
- British Bulldog is just a +1 bonus to counter-attack now
- Mike Target: if you successfully range in one the first attempt, you can attempt to bring in a second battery/unit with your remaining range-in attempts; no -1 to this attempt.
- Night Attack: Can only night attack in missions where the defender has minefields; if so, "Night-fighting: Dawn" rules are in effect. Units from the CORE formation may move freely from the start of the game; units from support or secondary formations may not move beyond deployment zone until morning breaks.
- Tip & Run now gives a +1 bonus to shoot & scoot maneuver
- Tally Ho increases score needed to pass tactics test (whatever that is) by 1; tactical speed is now 12" for tank teams w/ this trait.
- Semi-indirect unchanged.

Name: Simurgh

Classification: Mover 9, Shaker 13, Brute 9, Master 12, Tinker 8, Blaster 8, Thinker 10, Trump 7, Stranger 4
Powers:

Mover 9- Can travel from orbit to her chosen target and back again with terrifying speed. While she has never used this speed to hit multiple cities, it is probably well within her capabilities.

Shaker 13- Telekinesis that can cover an entire city and her famous 'scream'. While not capable of the same level of destruction as her brothers, she has the best battlefield control.

Brute 9- Just as durable as her brothers, though without quite as much physical strength. Inter-city missiles would be authorized if she wouldn't just throw them back at us.

Master 12- Easily the most dangerous Master in the world. It is impossible to tell who has been turned into a time-bomb by her scream, so city-wide quarantine protocols are in effect. She can also create decoys out of snow and ice that are realistic enough to fool Scion.

Tinker 8- The Simurgh can repurpose and upgrade Tinker-tech within her range, though she has never been shown to create her own.

Blaster 8- The Simurgh can use her TK in a varsity of ways to kill the shit out of people.

Thinker 10- The Simurgh has consistently displayed the ability to avoid attacks by opponents before they have been launched, clearly indicating some level of precognition.

Trump 7- Immune to a wide variety of Trump, Stranger, Mover, and Master powers among others.

Stranger 4- Incredibly life like decoys puppeted by telekinesis and created from whatever random debris is at hand.

Notes: We're all fucked in the A.

Requesting a female volcano themed Tiefling. Her skin is ash-grey with scattered growths resembling obsidian. Atop her head, the growths form horns more resembling stalactites and her eyes burn with fire. Her hands are covered in the same obsidian coating, forming claws and natural armor that continues to just before the elbow. Her legs are digitigrade with hooves and natural armor of the same material. Cracks in the obsidian glow as if magma is just beneath the surface. She has a long tail that ends in a smoldering tip. Her clothing is loose but worn and blackened, charred by her own heat.

"Psykers are OP but they really aren't" edition.

For all your questions on Dark Heresy (1st and 2nd Editions), Rogue Trader, Deathwatch, Black Crusade, and Only War.
Not the wargame, not Chapter Master, not Space Hulk. Inquisitor is okay, but not many people know about it.

Not sure between starting Dark Heresy 1e and 2e? Pick 2e.

>Why did FFG lose the 40k RPG License?
Because they were bought by Asmodee and that caused some sort of licensing conflict.

>Will GW make their own 40k RPGs now?
Probably not. But if they do it will likely be worse than you could possibly imagine.

If you don't like D&D as a tabletop rpg, what are some of the reasons?
What tabletop rpg do you prefer, and what does it offer that D&D doesn't? What things do you dislike about D&D that your preferred tabletop resolves, and how does it resolve them? Finally, is there anything about D&D that appeals to you?
I am generally asking more about 3.5 and particularly 5e, but if you have anything to say about previous editons, feel welcome.

I hate non WotC editions for being archaic.
I hate 3.x for being broken and that it dominated the market despite this because of OGL.
I hate 4e for killing any chance D&D will ever innovate.
I hate 5e for being a throwback, and even bringing back the market domination.

I love older editions for the fun settings, and the basic ones for the simple rules.
I really liked making characters and theorycrafting in 3.x, and it pioneered a sort of gonzo high magic fantasy.
4e perfected that colorful fantasy feel that 3.x introduced, and was also a damn good game; the only D&D that was actually brave enough to be frank with the player about how everything's supposed to work. It had a hard life, and left too soon.
5e streamlined a lot, made character creation a breeze, and is a great pickup game. Although official material is sparse, it's generally pretty good quality, as far as I can tell, and not having the splat-treadmill means there's lots of unexplored space.

What's the most corrupt sector of the traditional game industry?

If I had to pick, it would either be people that promise to make a complete game but don't (ie: Kickstarter) or lazy writers being scum. When a writer for an RPG does their job, you don't notice, because that's the point of writing- inform the player on crunch and fluff in such a way that they're interested in the game and not the skill of the writer.
When the writing sucks, it takes everything else down with it. It makes you scratch your head at how the mechanics fit into the world, it makes you double-check or homebrew shitty rules, and whenever there's shitty fluff it poisons the well for the rest of the setting.

When I think of corruption, I think of systematic problems.

Kickstarter is sadly a decent platform to scam people, and it's been used this way with board games, but for this to count as "corruption" Kickstarter would have to be actively resisting attempts to make scamming on their platform harder. Are they doing that?

I've seen more and more of this on /tg/ recently, and I thought it'd be interesting to try and have a reasonable discussion about it, as well as open up an angle which I haven't really seen broached before.

Does game design matter in RPGs? How significant is the system you're using for the experience, and how big a deal are flaws the system might possess? Does the GMs ability to fix things via rule zero hold a much larger sway than design itself?

Those are the basic questions, but the new thought I wanted to add to the conversation was this- If you're one of the people who believe game design is not significant, then what do you expect of game designers? What should they aspire for when making a new system, or focus their efforts on? If ensuring all the mechanics involved in the system are fit to purpose, that the options are decently balanced and that it all generally works isn't a big deal, what else should they be doing?

I doubt there's many people who would argue that game design doesn't matter at all.

More reasonable is the position that other factors can outweigh design. Familiarity, for example. If your players can't be bothered to learn the system, then what use was it to buy the game with excellent design?

PnP game design is also somewhat subjective. You can say William Faulkner was objectively a more important and original writer than Danielle Steele, but that doesn't stop people from buying her paperbacks in the airport.

The most important thing a system does for me is tell me what's important in the system--what situations do the rules address? What kind of interactions emerge when these rules are in play?

For example, I appreciate a lot about the design of GURPs, but even the light/starter pack version includes rules to describe in detail exactly how much a character can lift, exactly how fast they run, which is your dominant hand, etc. This implies to a newbie that all this is important, when 99% of the time, all you need to know is a relative hierarchy. Trying to simulate reality down to which hand is dominant implies every other greebly little factor could be in play.

Despite its flaws, I think this is a strength of old school D&D. Combat is abstracted to a single roll, implications of the spell descriptions are left to the DM rather than fine tuned like a legal contract, and many situations are left to player creativity and description (what use is it to know exactly how much you can lift in pounds, when the GM decides how heavy the rock is anyways--isn't it just as arbitrary?)

I'd argue you can also quite objectively assess a system based on how well it executes its premise.

If a system claims to achieve something, or that a certain rule works a certain way, if the mechanics fail to achieve that or actively undermine it there isn't really any other conclusion.

But this keys into what you said, which I agree with- Good design means knowing what your system cares about, and focusing the bulk of the mechanics on that, rather than labouring irrelevant extras with excessive rules.

>How significant is the system you're using for the experience, and how big a deal are flaws the system might possess?

It varies dramatically, with some groups sticking as close as they possibly can to the rules, other groups being quite loose and perhaps just building around a core mechanic.

For the most part, people tend to like to argue from the RAW stance, because system arguments are mostly about exchanging complaints until everyone leaves upset but convinced that they came out on top. Often, these arguments end up being rather far removed from how anyone actually plays the games, because they revolve around assuming the only way to play is in the absolute worst ways with no possible opportunity for remedy.

Discussions on the other hand tend to lean towards highlighting how important rule zero is and exploring what can be done with the system. Often, the flaws of most popular games are well known and easily remedied, and have stopped being any significant concern. A familiar example is D&D 4e's early monsters having too much HP, which is hardly worth obsessing about since there are a few easy guidelines for adjusting that to better suit a group's tastes, allowing the discussion to move past that moot point..

>If ensuring all the mechanics involved in the system are fit to purpose, that the options are decently balanced and that it all generally works isn't a big deal, what else should they be doing?

The major job of a game designer is less about producing balanced mechanics but rather introducing interesting options. Balance is a bit of a modern concern, and even then doesn't really extend to all modern games because there's other goals that are more important. Ultimately, a group that wants to break a game can break any game, and with a GM having easy and swift abilities for hammering down any standing nails, the question of balance is always ultimately secondary.

Friendly Virtual Gaming Thread - /fvgt/
Welcome to the Friendly Virtual Gaming Thread. Here we aim to be the FLGS of /tg/, finding free resources to make it easy for /tg/ users to jump right into traditional gaming, and
forming a small community around that.
Its chiefly for people who play online instead of in person, to talk about the specifics of online ttrpg.
We also try to get various amounts of shit done, whether it's writing, homebrew, art, or whatever else deemed worthy of /tg/. Have a project? Come and pitch it to us. Don't have one? Come and shoot the shit with us anyway.

1. Check the PDF for the game
2. Post a request for a game, using the suggested resource, either here or in the Game Finder Thread
3. If there's a particular game you're looking for that we don't have a resource as of yet, let us know and we can work to expand our list.
4. Finally, hang around and chat. There's always some crazy project someone is Working on.

Summary of the setting so far:

It originally started as "What if we ran a Mad Max campaign," but once an anon suggested adding alien tech to it, it blew up into a huge post-apocalyptic setting borrowing elements from various sources, including Tri-Gun, Borderlands, and Fist of the North Star.

The planet Babylon was originally an Earth-like planet with perhaps a few settlements and cities on it. However, in a climactic battle between two major star fleets, a massive nuclear weapon was deployed, setting off a chain reaction between every other nuclear weapon and power source in the battle, causing nearly all of them to simultaneously detonate, and the ships to destabilize their orbit. The resulting crash and nuclear fallout on Babylon transformed the planet into a torrential landscape of nearly uninhabitable wastelands. A century later and the survivors of the event are struggling to survive, living off of what habitable lands survive and using whatever tech they can salvage from the crash, and from bits of space debris that finally comes crashing in from orbit.
