Hello, everyone.
I started playing pen and pencil rpgs last year, but I've been playing Video Games my whole life. I've never run a game, but I have a couple groups of friends who I've talked with about playing some tabletop games and they're wanting me to be the GM. I'm not opposed to this. In fact, it may be a lot of fun for me as I have a pretty imaginative mind. The only problem is, like I said, I have NEVER done this before.
I decided to start this thread in hopes that perhaps some of you who have experience could give some pointers to me (and anyone else in need of them) about running games.
In the meantime, I'll bump with reaction images.

Here is the only real (two pieces) advice you need unless you meet a truly extreme situation.
First: TALK WITH THE DAMN PLAYERS. Don't just dismiss things like most GMs, or ignore problems. Talk to them, one on one. Fix the problem, whether its something too big of a cliche (which can easily be made to be interesting) or whether its simply being a dick (tell what they're doing, why it's a dick move, and what you want-be careful to not be a dick in the process.)
Second-Learn to improvise. The players will always take you by surprise. So learn to react quickly. Learn the system inside-out while you're at it to ensure you reaction can be mechanically correct. Know your campaign/world well. Always have at least one note for all areas, so you can improvise from that.
That's all OP, hope it goes well.
Oh, and don't let videogame mentality bring you down.

What sort of traits could we give to creatures like Rocs to make them distinct apart from their large size? Part of me was thinking of making them an intelligent counterpart to Dragons and possibly natural enemies as well. Perhaps their wings have extra digits that allow them rudimentary manipulation and ability to grasp things
>>51761514
They live in the mountains, but subsist on whales.
>>51761514
They are more prone to certain magical mutations that affect their specific species. One variant of Roc is the Glacial Roc which has lost it's ability to fly in order to swim. They tend to hunt giant fish and crustacians but are also predated upon by psionic killer whales and get into fights with Remorhazz
>>51761732
>giant, killer penguins
I like it.
Can someone explain me how he was reborn beyond lolmagic and christian references? I'm sure it's better explained in the books. Also why did he become The White? Isn't Saruman the White one? I heard something about Saruman becoming multicolor. Is Gandalf now Saruman and Saruman a different thing? I love LOTR but I never understood this part.
>>51761500
>Gandalf is an angel in human form
>Dies
>Spirit goes to where spirits go
>God brings he back
Saruman is Saruman, Gandalf is Gandalf
>>51761500
Have you tried reading the books?
>>51761534
Why does he come back with Saurman's title?
>>51761550
Yes but I was 9. It did wonders to my reading skills and I became and avid reader, but I wasn't really prepared to understand the heaviest and deepest parts.
I should give it a try again, but I have so much else to read...
Post your boys
The cards that nobody else really cares about, the cards that aren't really even that good, but the cards that you still love and make room for in any deck you can.
Opal Archangel
A wizard stole all of the healthy food. How do people survive?
Cannibalism. Also they grow new food.
>>51760586
>Hard mode
He also steals all nutritional info and data.

HAMBURGLER STRIKES AGAIN!
What is /tg/'s take on Blue Rose? How is its setting and how does it compare to the other AGE games?
>>51760492
NON WHAT IS THIZ ELA ORATE NOW
System is passable but nothing special. Setting is pretty shit and is written even worse which doesn't help it's case. There are some cool things you can do in the system though (Dolphin paladins, anyone?)
The company's decision to entwine the game with IRL politics didn't help endear the system to anyone either.
>>51761362
>Dolphin paladins
But RIFTS has Dolphin paladins fighting Cthulhu
Post your collection
Mine are a bunch of random shit in bags, I ain't taking all that out for a photo op.
I don't have a good picture, but I just bought a new Chessex Pound o'dice today. Got some shitty flat coloured d20s which kinda suck, but also got some really awesome shiny blue d100 style d10s, which is really nice.
I have 4 10-piece sets of Koplow dice. They're great.
I was literally autistic enough to excel spreadsheet out like 500 rolls a piece to statistically prove they were fair.
Fresh off of my college's DnD club page.

That person may just be pulling your leg.
>>51760205
No I've met her in person she's genuine about this stuff.
>>51760157
I made it two sentences in. Abandoning ship.
What is the mood of most of your games? I run Nobledark most of the time.
This chart is trash
>>51760093
I run nobledark, but less as the chart describes it and more 'characters can make lasting change but the world is a dark shithole' flavour.
Also
>>51760129
So I noticed people only really post "That Guy" threads. Why not talk about This Guy instead?
Just post your greentext stories for This Guy.
>>51759385
This guy stories don't have the fundamental, underlying tension and horror that That Guy stories can generate.
The land of the happy people is very nice to live in, but very boring to hear about.
>GM runs 3 other games every week.
>Still has time for our game
>Runs higher level games
>Doesn't railroad
>Is always on time and has great worldbuilding.
>>51759463
Hey, This Guy can sometimes be really awesome in terms of what he does in roleplay.
So at least that can go in.
Plus, This Guy standing up to That Guy can be interesting.
Is it true that you can build a meta Monarch deck in YGO with three Monarch structure decks?
>YGO
KYS
>>51757952
Lay off him. Yugioh is TG and he can ask. This board isn't just for M:tG and 40k you know.
>>51758993
FATAL is TG but you still can't discuss it unironically.
I'm not implying that yugioh is the FATAL of card games. I'm implying that FATAL is almost the yugioh of tabletop games.
What's the best system for running a game that features mechs but also infantry that could potentially take a mech out ?
Pic sort of related.
Silcore, in particular I'd recommend either Heavy gear or Jovian Chronicles.
Palladium's RIFTS books feature powered armour and gundam sized robots. As well as the equipment for infantry to deal reasonable damage to them.
I'm unsure how much has been moved over to the new Rifts ruleset, but it may be worth taking a look. I forget who made it though.
OVA
>Pour all my creative efforts into a campaign and worldbuilding
>One day I'm asked to run a one session for a game that I don't really care about only because I'm the only one who has played it before
>Make a hasty campaign without giving much of a shit about the details and without putting effort
>everyone saying they preferred this session to the huge campaign of the other game
I don't fucking know, does this mean I am a shitty GM?
I know what some are going to say, that I should just fuck it all and continue doing the game I'm apparently good at, but at this point I've already put too much effort and like too much the system of the other
You've learned a valuable lesson:
Players are more concerned with having fun than sucking you off while you narrate the tax policies of your novel's main characters.
>>51757181
fuck you
really fuck you, I came expecting constructive criticism instead of pretentious smugness of fucktards who know how the fuck I do my games
you could at the very fucking least pretend to ask first about how are my campaigns and what they consist of before saying that they are about tax policies, but you had to play the ultimate douchebag card
you better be proud of yourself you fucking cunt, you successfully turned my sadness and self doubt into sheer anger
>>51757239
>I came expecting constructive criticism instead of pretentious smugness of fucktards who know how the fuck I do my games
You came here of all places for that? What a fucking downie.
Still, he has a point. Generally speaking people have more fun just fooling around without a care than taking part in a narrative. Especially if they themselves didn't really have any imput in the creation of said narrative.
Now come on, drink a juicebox and calm down.
Would it bother you If dwarfs would build normal cities and not picture?
No, of course not. Though they should have their own unique architecture.
>>51755483
Define "normal"
Have both. Major cities can be imposing strongholds, but it takes more than fortified cities to make a kingdom/empire. You need agriculture and commerce to fund and feed a city. I like to have huge swathes of farmland and industry overlooked by the traditional looming mountain city.
Didn't see a thread on it, so what do you guys thing about this 40k tabletop simulator?
As someone who's always wanted to play but never had time/friends into it/money for dudes I think it looks neat.

>>51754080
Do you even VASSAL?
>>51754105
No. Not gonna lie, the the interface looks off putting and sketchy.
>flame me, I don't care ur gonna do it anyway
>>51754080
Me and a buddy do weekly kill team games on TTS. It works well enough, especially once you figure out how to easily manipulate the interface
