That's what I love so much about manga. A lot of good manga that will never get an anime adaptation just have such incredibly silly and unique premises, it's hard to get bored of them. Though sometimes a by the numbers battle shonen is nice too.

It's pretty silly but if I had to choose between that or HAES, I'd go for that. This might be one of the reasons why Japan is the industrialized country with the lowest obesity rates: you get the shit shamed out of your for being flabby.
>>
>>51767799

It is true, their collectivist culture allows face to influence people in some positive respects that we should look to emulate ourselves in some respects (the values, not the sociological concept of face, fuck that. fuck it right in the goddamn face) but I more attributed the lowest rates towards their the common diet which is one of the best.
>>
>>51767921
>not the sociological concept of face
You mean tatemae and honne? That's a pretty good concept to have as a society though (but it does create a lot of issues when dealing with people who don't understand it).

>but I more attributed the lowest rates towards their the common diet which is one of the best
True that. The Nip diet and the Mediterranean diet are the best bar none.
>>
>>51767932

Its a legitimization of being a surface level prat that refuse to actually embrace anything outright (cue porn where they are only either dead fish, covering their face or acting pained) even if they are facts. Apparently they do it enough that even writing formal declarations in essays and stuff are softened with heavy qualifiers.

Its a fucking institutionalization of emotional suppression, miscommunication, and outright misleading others, something that has caused me personally a lot grief over the years in my own environs.

The counter-culture reactions of this are also disruptive. When you set the pendulum to such an extreme angle, its going to rock back the other way just as hard.

There's a time and place for being tactful. Then there's time when things are more important than someone random fuck's hurt feelings.
>>
>>51768125
I can see that from an individualistic perspective, but I imagine that if you look at it from a collectivistic perspective (like that of Japanese culture itself) it mostly serves to maintain social harmony. I imagine this also caused the WW2 American image of the "ratty, treacherous jap" but at the same time it's not really lying if everyone knows you're lying.

>cue porn where they are only either dead fish, covering their face or acting pained
This is kinda weird. I'd assume something like porn would automatically be considered part of the private sphere, right?

>The counter-culture reactions of this are also disruptive. When you set the pendulum to such an extreme angle, its going to rock back the other way just as hard.
I agree, but the big difference is that over the past half century, our counter-culture has become our culture. The West is already as bad as Japan's counter-culture. Hell, shit like the gyaru subculture is entirely based around copying Western (mostly American) fashion and sensibilities.

Suicide.

Don't glorify shitty aspects of societies just because they're exotic to you.

I cannot really deem Japan as being in social harmony given their work and social struggles that have accrued from this persisting system in modern society. Its a system that assumes that everyone is already in equilibrium and it maintains that. Likely pretty good for a smaller community (probably around Dunbar's number) but breaks down in larger contexts or even slight divergences...having this talk on THIS site makes me wonder how the Japanese treat people with Actual autism.

Its ignoring of the many aspects of the human condition that will always create tension rather than adjusting to or sometimes even acknowledging them. It is belief that to be human and all its faults is a immediate handicap rather than merely the baseline.

With that said, I cannot look at my own society and believe its "da best, 'murica!" But we try to make it better. And sometimes we can make it better by bettering ourselves. A web of people will likely be much stronger if they are all realized as Individuals rather than existing as merely part of some larger whole.

>2nd line

It affects all spheres which is some of what causes the jarring effect for those of a different cultural background. Of course the puritan-based extreme separation of the public and private has its own pitfalls. Thats' changing now along with many other elements of privacy with propagation of the internet.

>3rd one
That is exactly my point, their hard line drive towards gyaru, an extremification, is the response to the stagnant culture that never allows for any disparities in behavior. US culture has evolved (for better or for worse) in waves over time, usually as a generation of people each, and will (hopefully) continue to do so. It is notable that those waves have increased in tempo to happen within a generation which may have repercussions. Time will tell.

And fuck me you responded fast each time while I linger on each of mine. Whats the source on >>51767799.
>>
>>51768519
Well, I guess you're right there actually. Those are actually some pretty good points, I guess a lot of it really does rely on denial of social issues to a certain extent.

While curt, this is a point regarding what I brought up about emotional suppression. My grief that I spoke to is exactly this. I hate it because I see some of my(former) self within it and I detest anything the that would standardize this path to self-harm.

And to now get some pathos up in this bitch by south park: https://youtu.be/dUE_Lr5IhvU?t=40

Yet again you respond fast enough that I cannot even get this extension done in time. Thank you for the discussion and src.
