What if the "Trade Language" isn't even a spoken language at all, but rather the character is proficient at grunting, gesticulating and generally showing their interest in buying a good for so much cash.

That way a person *has* to learn the local language if they want to hold a conversation, but anyone who knows Trade can "function" in a foreign society.
>>
>>52122553
Necromancers are great, they can talk to the dead to emulate divination, they can use negative energy and cold to both blast and battlefield control, and of course they can summon hordes of the damned to emulate a conjuration summoner.

They are jacks of all trades, one of the many reasons the dread Necro was so damn good.

>his characters entire motivation is that they were bored with life or want to get filthy rich

Why do people do this? Why is it so difficult for them to get involved in the story? Can't they just get back to playing video games instead?
30 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
>>52122228
because its a reasonable motivation that can be easily supplanted by a deeper motivation once the BBEG does something

because most characters arent made with heavy involvement in the setting due to that being restrictive

because its fun&easy
>>
>>52122265
>bbeg isn't a low effort individual
>huge lore preface is given before character creation
>character could have some sort of anchor in the world that the DM could use
It's not fun&easy, it's low effort and low immersion. People who do this are incidentally also bad players, because their characters have no motivation to do anything before the BBEG literally rapes an entire village in front of them. Most often such characters are also merely stereotypes, such as the elf-hating drunkard dwarf fighter.
>>
>>52122228
>>his characters entire motivation is that they were bored with life or want to get filthy rich
It's realistic.

>High School

Me and some friends were in a campaign. The DM showed us his OC. Being nice and all, compliment the design. DM improves his art skillz. Asks if we would mind if he put the OC into the game. "Sure, why not?" we say.

With those words, magic and might were no longer the strongest powers in the land. No, they paled in comparison of this new power.

Memes

The OC is an Enderman (Yes, as in Minecraft) with the strength of 100 raging neckbeards, able to heft his 300-1000 lb weapons of encounter raping. He wears a green trenchcoat, made of creeper skins of course, and is a moron.

Just bringing the OC along basically trivializes everything. A lich? Cool, I'll just rip its head off and kill it instantly. Dracolich? Time to sever the neck in two turns, killing it instantly. Oh, is that some really old brandy? Let me just grab that, some rope, some gunpowder, and BAM. 12d12 hill leveling bomb crafted by the power of memes and minecraft lets plays.

>Today

Said GMPC has gotten redesigned, is no longer sustained by the power of "Random XD", and is more serious as a character. The GM has matured in the art of GMing. Still, it is fun to remember a time when this was a thing.

my GMPC was a walking parody of one
level 20 with epic boons, packed to the gills with artifacts, annoyingly polite to everyone

he never seemed to be able to help the PCs with their personal problems, he was always saving the world off-screen
>>
>>52122040
Did you ever encounter one of the threats he fought? Sounds like one of the better GMPCs by the way.

Mine usually kept them as background characters.
My personal favorite was just a giant cleric of winter who was basically a fucking viking, and had a barrel of kittens he carried on his back to give to the hopeless people to raise spirits.

When was the last time you came across altruism while participating in traditional games?
74 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
>>52121958

Altruism does not exist, every opt-in action has a cost and some possible gain even if they are extremely abstract.
>>
>>52122289
>Altruism does not exist
Altruism exists, because altruism is the basis for comparative morality.

Suppose there are two options, and both are "good" morality-wise. The catch is, one option is less good for you personally and more good for someone else you might or might not know, and the other option is vice versa.
No one will judge you if you pick one option over the other. Despite that, there are still people who choose the option with lesser personal gain.

my players love being good, they, only with occasional hesitation, always try to do the right thing

Hello /tg/, I have a problem I need your help with.As a massive Terry Pratchett fan I want to introduce Death as a recurring NPC in my campaigns. Go with the Disney Hades but rather than have him shoehorned into being a generic villain have him be just doing a job. Gives the impression of being a bit sleazy, a bit of a fast talking used car salesman people don't trust him but basically is an alright sort of guy with a job to do. Delegates a lot of his work, would delegate more but you can't find reliable underlings these days.

Either that or you could go full Baron Samedi. Jovial, bombastic and loves a bottle or two of whatever the local hard alcohol is. Has been known to look the other way for a time, has been known to "loose" people in the filing (near death experiences), will always have time for a joke and a laugh, fond of music, fond of dancing you can put money on that not being tobacco in that pipe of his. Always has time for his people (the dead), does not delegate but also doesn't have to be just in one place at once.
>>
>>52122662
I like the idea of a tacky Death in a cheap suit. It seems like everyone these days wants a cool, sexy Death, maybe as a hot chick or whatever. Or a """funny""" Pratchett rip-off. A sleazebag, kind of whiny, a little pathetic, always overworked, would be legitimately fun.

I think the bigger question is... Why the fuck would you stat gods?
>>
>>52120466
Nope, it's a level 9/8 spell once cast at that level. I can't remember the exact evidence for that, I just remember it being a thing.

Vulnerability has no save, as does magic missile.

Must be really powerful legendary actions, because they only need one turn (Grave cleric's turn) + one turn (Druid's turn)
The only thing is, if you have immunity to force damage you become resistant, if you have resistance you have normal damage and if you're normal you have vulnerability. So it's technically better than 2x damage, but it doesn't ignore what resistance they have.

>>52120484
This
>>
>>52120444
In my experience, entirely underwater campaigns aren't really any different. Either you ignore restrictions, and let everyone act as normal but with what amounts to a fly speed, or you heavily restrict everything and either everyone plays underwater races to ignore them, or they pick options to have ways to ignore it.

Thematically, it can be great, but mechanically, its best ignored, or done in short bursts.
