Hello /tg/, I have a problem I need your help with.As a massive Terry Pratchett fan I want to introduce Death as a recurring NPC in my campaigns. Unfortunately I am too much of a fucking idiot to figure out how I want to characterize him, and I don't wanna straight up steal Sir Terry's work. Can you guys give me some inspiration?

If anyone deserved immortality, it was Terry Pratchett.

Go with the Disney Hades but rather than have him shoehorned into being a generic villain have him be just doing a job. Gives the impression of being a bit sleazy, a bit of a fast talking used car salesman people don't trust him but basically is an alright sort of guy with a job to do. Delegates a lot of his work, would delegate more but you can't find reliable underlings these days.
Either that or you could go full Baron Samedi. Jovial, bombastic and loves a bottle or two of whatever the local hard alcohol is. Has been known to look the other way for a time, has been known to "loose" people in the filing (near death experiences), will always have time for a joke and a laugh, fond of music, fond of dancing you can put money on that not being tobacco in that pipe of his. Always has time for his people (the dead), does not delegate but also doesn't have to be just in one place at once.

I like the idea of a tacky Death in a cheap suit. It seems like everyone these days wants a cool, sexy Death, maybe as a hot chick or whatever. Or a """funny""" Pratchett rip-off. A sleazebag, kind of whiny, a little pathetic, always overworked, would be legitimately fun.

I like the Baron Samedi bit quite a lot, I recommend it

Whatever you do, make sure to give him a white horse called Binky.
Sir Terry Pratchett was a god amongst men.

Possibly as a guy who really fucking hates necromancy, and chips however he can when he sees it, since he views it as someone personally giving him the finger.
alternately, pic related if you want asshole death
In the game I hosted, death acted like your cool grandad that would let a 12 year old sip his beer. Mainly old af and friendly.

That depends heavily on what you want this character to DO.
What role are they gonna play in the game?

>asshole Death
This.
He's old, he's crotchety, he's seen it all, and he's done with your shit.

yes, yes he did.

I run fairly lethal games, so I want him entering stage left every time one of the PCs dies. Ideally something to look forward to, as a counterbalance to feeling bad for losing your character.

now that is a definite possibility for a later campaign, but for now I wanted a fun NPC to take the edge of character death
