Alright fa/tg/uys, have a couple stories to share. First: Murder Gent.
>Just boarded plane.
>Aisle seat. Seat across from me is empty. Mother and daughter by window.
>Look up, see Murder Gent.
>Towers over everyone. Guy's huge.
>Head is shaved bald, trimmed beard. Well dressed in a black suit.
>Fierce stare, like he's ready to choke someone out.
>Coming toward me.
>Shit shit shitshitshit no bro don't sit next to
>SHITHEHASTHEAISLESEATSHIT
>Mother looks nervous.
>Sits, closes his eyes while plane takes off.
>Asian couple in front of me points at pin on his jacket, whisper to each other.
>The fuck? Is this guy mafia? The fuck is going on?
>Sitting with eyes closed and guy's STILL making everyone uncomfortable.
>Plane takes off. Nothing happens.
>Attendants come by.
>Murder Gent has rumbling, deep voice. Extremely polite.
>Hour goes by. Waiting for something to happen.
>Finally does when he fishes something out from the coat folded on his lap.
>Monster Manual.
>Wait, what?
>Guy proceeds to read, glaring at the pages.
>Little girl sees pictures. Can't help herself.
>Asks what he's reading.
>Murder Gent shows her the page on dragons.
"I'm going to tell my friends a story. But to make a good story, I will need good monsters."
>Mother doesn't know what to do, seems torn between wanting to tell her daughter to not bother the stranger and seeing where this goes.
>Little girl is all-in now, asks about every monster and tells him what good stories have (e.g. Princesses, magic, jokes).
>Whole time Murder Gent looks just as intense, but is humoring her and explaining things patiently.
>They keep talking. I start to feel like an asshole.
>Guy's a total bro and I judged him for having stage four RBF.
>Little girl gets distracted, I start up a conversation. ("You DM?")
>That's how I met Murder Gent, one of my favorite people to talk shop with.

>Murder Gent asked to GM Iron Kingdoms (WM/H RPG)
>During character creation, EVERY PLAYER asks if he can secretly betray the party.
>Says yes, works with each to make them feel they're the only ones looking to backstab.
>Hook is that they're asked to recover tome and cypher.
>Find out tome has formula to create a devastating plague, need cypher to read it.
>Starting with masquerade where they pilfer cypher, party starts stealing from one another and creating duplicates, none of them ever roll high enough to notice.
>There are five forgeries of the cypher in play. Murder Gent actually keeps chart to track who has which.
>Fight through monsters, soldiers, slavers, cross the desert. Swear to be bros for life.
>Go through a dungeon built into cave, recover tome.
>IMMEDIATELY dick one another over, now there are four tome forgeries in play (two players allied).
>Get back to civilization, find clearing.
>Secretly blighted Legion (Elf disguise) player has forces spring out.
>Secretly Thamarite player has cultists pop out.
>Secretly Menite monk has fighters emerge.
>Secret Cygnaran watches as warcaster/detachment arrives.
>Not-so-secret Khadoran spy laughs as soldiers deploy.
>Wait.
>Dude, what? I'm the traitor.
>No, I'm the traitor.
>Uh, no, I'm the traitor. I have the cypher.
>No you don't, I do.
>Players put it together, praise Murder Gent but also call him an asshole.
>Massive bloodshed as everyone starts ripping into each other.
>Utter chaos results in Cygnaran and Menite surviving, everyone else dead or scattered.
>Cygnar warcaster elects to burn all forgeries. World is safer without the risk.
>Whole point of campaign just got destroyed. Players aren't even mad, too busy laughing about everyone betraying each other. Meticulously going over each other's actions to see if there were hints or explaining why they had done something off previously.
Final result: Menite had the cypher, Thamarite had the tome. Murder Gent had the most fun.

I actually DMed an online game Murder Gent played in. One of my house rules is that if you role play well or make a compelling argument, you get advantage on a skill check or some other bonus.

>Phandalin. Party just killed about six Rebrands.
>At tavern they hang out at, trying to get info on them.
>Murder Gent's character takes out a bloody scarf, silently puts it on the bar.
>Bartender thinks it's weird, doesn't acknowledge.
>Character takes out another bloody scarf, silently puts it on the bar.
>Bartender gets a little nervous.
>Another bloody scarf. Silence.
>Bartender starts to sweat.
>Hell, at this point I'm getting nervous. Keep in mind that Murder Gent talks in a rumbling, firm voice. He's describing this on mic.
>This isn't even THAT intimidating and I'm being a little bitch about it.
>Murder Gent takes out a stake from earlier in the adventure. Stabs it through a scarf and sticks it to the bar.
>God damn dude make an intimidate roll with advantage Christ.
Every now and then he does something like that that reminds me that the first time I met this guy I thought he was going to cut someone's throat.

I need help. I really wanna try some rp. I have at least two friends who have agreed to play with me. I'd rather be a player but i figure the only way its gonna happen is if I dm.
So what game would you recommend?
Is a simpler system good for beginners or will it require more from me? Will a more detailed game be better?
And we don't even know if we'll like it so we dont really want spend too much on books and stuff yet.

You can always try a lightweight system like Barbarians of Lemuria, FATE, a DnD retroclone, etc.
And most systems are available as pdfs, so cost probably won't come up. Though if you actually use and like a system, you should shell out for it.

Usually mondays at 4PM GMT, but they sometimes extend to Tuesdays if we got caught in the middle of something when the thread died and it was too late to make another one the same day.

Sure, just think of a character and have fun, you can find most info in 1d4chan albeit it's ussually a little bit out of date in comparison to where the threads are.

Not really, we've had Xeno infiltrators, Chaos infiltrators, Villains, Heroes, Normal Guardsmen, Crazed Guardsmen, Assassins, Psykers, Space Marines, Inquisitors, Squats... just think whathever and join the fun.

Yes as long as you don't use it to powerplay.

We tend to use spoilers for OOC chat, but nothing is set in stone.
We tend to use greentexts for describing a character's actions, but again nothing is set in stone.
Use d20s for combat checks and d100s for other things you want to roll, higher Is better.
It's important to know that the regiment is now no longer in the employ of a dozen+ radical Inquistors, and have instead been folded back into guard ranks of Ultima Segmentum. Yes we've been through a lot of shit.

I like injecting realism into my tabletop games. Players must specify every action they take, no matter how insignificant it seems, or it could have major repercussions.

Usually a game plays out in the scope of a couple of days and you don't tend to lose muscle that fast
Of course that could be different depending on the species you're playing but for humans thats 2 much

you wake up with a ringing in your ear, blurry headache, you open your eyes and look around you see other each other, your clothes are scorched, the area around you looks destroyed, stone is singed and crumbling around you. in the middle is some kind of statue thats been completely shattered.
you hear the sound of multiple soldiers charging up the stairs shouting "kill the heretics!"
thats what I've got for the intro, I'm going to be running a game where the players are the split powers of a single god who have to piece together what happened to them.
i haven't read much of the god bound book but I'm liking it so far so I'm working on a campaign.
your thoughts? also I'm looking for some kind of big bad type of enemy, so far i have
1 - a determined human with a vendetta and will go to any lengths to kill the gods.
hes driven, maybe charismatic or crazy, but in the end hes just a normal human that had the power to change the world and take on 6 gods, one man changed the whole world.
2 - An emperor who has declared war on the gods
less dramatic but still can be interesting, a whole nation has declared war on gods, most people dont agree with them. he also has 10 powerful people titled god killers, human with impossible levels of strength as his soldiers.
3 - the titans that were sealed away before the reign of the gods have now awoken
4 - the trickster god
finally enacted his plan to kill the other gods, but since you were assumed dead/split he didnt take you out, so its you 6 versus him, you have a chance since he only won because he had the element of surprise.

So /tg/, let me ask you. Is there an audience for a cheaper alternative to wargames? I understand that for many, building and painting an army, acquiring them over time is a good bit of the fun. And playing in long, drawn out games is the point of the genre. But do you think a new game could do well if built on a foundation away from pricey miniatures? Something expandable of course, with a good system and gameplay to hold it up, but played with plastic and cardboard pieces. Is there enough interest to make a project like that viable?

Thanks, thats a good point actually. Would it help if the game encouraged that? Maybe the webstore has even cheaper PDFs you can buy if thats your thing, or if you just wanted to try it out. But I was planning on the game having a unique dice system, so you'd have to get the base set at some point.

No company would want to do this, because they wouldn't make a profit. With advances in pre painting and modelling, more pre painted and assembled ready to go wargames might be a thing.
But cardboard? The cheap bastard gamers aren't a market. The feitishisation of production values continues because cardboard looks like shit, and often it's not that much more expensive to have minis.
