Not-Spartan Alternative Wargames edition.

A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks. /hwg/ doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to very specific games, so this thread isn't tied to a game, or a genre, lets talk about fun wargames.

How is Bushido? The models are really nice, but I've heard mention that it's similar to Warmahordes and Malifaux in that you need to be able to build really synergistic lists, and I'm awful at that.

So for the sake of argument the setting is more akin to WWII era as far as weapons and combat doctrine tends to go. That said, you have a side of the conflict that makes use of magic creatures sort of like pic related that they let loose into a city under siege the main use of such creatures is to get as close to various enemy units and cause as much physical and psycological damage as possible utilizing a sort of illusion like ability that works so long as you don't look to terribly hard (i.e. a passing glance would have you see a woman in distress but the close and more carefully you looked at it the more of the spider features you see).
How would the deployment of such weapons shape the combat?

It's the job of the DM to be an asshole. If you've ever played with a weak-willed DM things often get out of hand quickly, and you get shitty powergamers steam rolling over the sessions.

I've got an old DnD friend from High School. Now that we're all in college and my social phobic ass couldn't ask to join a game where I am if someone put a gun to my head. So my pal says he'll make an online game for me to play and bring some friends along.
When he throws together the sheet for the rules of the setting its a ASOIF low-fantasy witch hunting style game. Humans only, no arcane or divine spellcasting. Not my style, I'm more of a "Lizardfolk Druid atop his Pet T-rex" kinda guy, but hey, he's running a campaign just so I can play, I'm just gonna go along with it.
So I suit up with a Human Bloodrager (I'm keeping my powers hidden) and get ready to do this with the two other people who managed to join. He throws us into a dungeon and says we'll fight witches.
It takes about three rounds of combat before we're making throws to stay conscious and hauling ass outta there. He says we'll try again next week and that we should have been prepared.
I flipped out. I feel bad about it because it was more complicated than I can get out, but whatever.
We try again and again, making a total of five attempts between four sessions. He's only been ramping up the challenges, because nearly dying to two burning hands wasn't enough, and I'm honestly flabbergasted.
I told him that if we don't succeed at this next game I'm done. I wanted to play some D&D, not smash my head against a brick wall and wait a week for the privilege to do it again.

Thing is though it's literally all witches and we're completely without a full spellcaster, and there's two of us. I feel like he's chopping off our legs and telling us we should be able to run away.

Hmm, yeah, that's gonna fuck up the CR calculations quite a bit, I would imagine.
Tell him he has to adjust CRs if he's gonna homebrew PF like that.
Or, as >>52371086 said, go all OSR-sneaky on your GM. Find the location of one witch and cut her throat while she's sleeping. Witches do have to sleep, you know. Refuse to go in the dungeon, if there is one. Poison the people you suspect are helping the witches. Fuck his shit up.

I chose to lure an iron golem our jackass cleric had infused with fire magic out onto a rickety pier, hoping it'd fall into the water and...I didn't know what, but hopefully be unable to swim.
The golem didn't break the thing with its weight, and so I took one swing too many before our sorcerer managed to take out the support beams. The golem was destroyed when it got submerged in the water, but my character had been pulped the turn before.

Making a setting made to fit the feel and aesthetic of Heavy, Death, and Power metal has been done, but what would a setting meant to invoke the feel of Sludge metal be like? I imagine rather greasy and covered in cheap beer and sweat.

Upon opening a chest that you believe to be filled with gold you instead find that it has a most fiendishly clever device. When you open it, your opening releases a pin which causes a springloaded mechanism to strike a steel plate with a flint crystal at speed, which ignites a set of oil soaked bags which are stuffed with about eighty kilograms of gunpowder and a bunch of lead balls. The device works as intended and the chest explodes with a spray of splinters, lead balls and fire.

Well /tg/ I'm basically making an irish revolution in a high fantasy setting, where the irish are pretty large and a bit more vikingy and the british are elves. I need a way to make the vikings less appealing to the party as I want them to be hard pressed to choose a side, any ideas?

This. You are going to have to have them have some strange behaviors that are off putting, but not so off putting you can't look past it.
Also, you need to try to justify the elvish peoples motives in some way. Preferably outside of economic reasons. Possibly something along the lines of if the Viking dudes are not subjugated they will likely raid across the land and cause more net strife then there subjugation, and culling them seems overly dickish.
