Okay so here is the simplified version of the plot:
TLDR: Time travel, aliens, and an incredibly long and complex story about a glitchy video game that makes several universes implode
There are four kids, John, Dave, Rose and Jade. They play a game called Sburb together and find there is more going on than they thought, and the true aim of the game is to create a universe. Unfortunately, this also causes the destruction of Earth. They start talking to a group of internet trolls, who turn out to be a group of aliens who are actual trolls who contact them throughout their timeline using some futuristic IM app (???)
They go through various shenanigans such as Rose giving up command of her mind and body to eldritch abominations, Dave time travelling all over the place, John creating the baby versions of himself, Jade (who is actually his long lost twin) and Rose and Dave (who are also twins) and sends them back in time so they can become themselves. Oh, and the trolls start murdering each other because of both cultural reasons (come from a society where murder is encouraged) and a couple of them are just insane.
The four kids soon learn that their game session is unwinnable and they cannot create a new universe, so they must Scratch their world (which is like the universe undergoing a hard reset, but with different conditions the second time around), they manage to escape by entering a void between universes, and meet up with the remaining trolls (except John and Jade are both separated from the rest) and travel for three years into the newly remade universe.
Here there are another four kids, Jane, Jake, Roxy and Dirk, who are actually the ancestors (in the most stupidly roundabout way possible) of the other four kids. They are playing there own session, and have help from two cherubs in the same way that the John etc have help from the trolls.

One of the cherubs kills the other and becomes the main villain, Lord English, through various bits of time travel bullshit which are very complicated and I will not get into them here.
Once all the heroes meet up they go to fight both Lord English and Betty Crocker (as in the baked goods brand. yeah turns out she's a troll as well and is trying to take over the world. yeah) but everyone dies except John, one of the trolls and Roxy, so John finds the House Juju, which is symbolic of homestuck itself and sticks his hand into it, giving him the power to move throughout homestuck canon at will. He uses it to change the timeline so the Everyone Dies Event never happened, and in the new timeline everyone fights Lord English.
We still haven't seen this fight.
They make a new universe after finally completing Sburb and live there, except its probably the universe where the Cherubs originated from so that's probably screwed. (The comic has been updating through snapchat recently and it hasn't really given us all that much)
There is also a video game coming out this month called Hiveswap (it'll be on steam) and it's supposed to be accessible to people who haven't read the comic so if you want you could pick that up.
In hindsight this is still probably very confusing.

I am a man and unironically watch this show. It's actually pretty entertaining, especially when the characters hamster away all their stupid decisions as "adventurous" or whatnot.

seen a good amount of this show. definitely the sort of thing that was fairly "groundbreaking" tv at the time but does not hold up well today. there was definitely a specific moment where a lot of young girls watched this show and tried to use the 4 main characters to figure out aspects of themselves with regard to femininity/being a girl in "modern society"

i think that time is over and has been over for a long time tho so i'm not sure i agree that all girls are obsessed with this. there are contemporary shows that do the same thing but better/in a more present moment

it's really easy to watch the show today and laugh at the absurdity of the characters' lives because it all seems so made up
