I am a man and unironically watch this show. It's actually pretty entertaining, especially when the characters hamster away all their stupid decisions as "adventurous" or whatnot.

seen a good amount of this show. definitely the sort of thing that was fairly "groundbreaking" tv at the time but does not hold up well today. there was definitely a specific moment where a lot of young girls watched this show and tried to use the 4 main characters to figure out aspects of themselves with regard to femininity/being a girl in "modern society"

i think that time is over and has been over for a long time tho so i'm not sure i agree that all girls are obsessed with this. there are contemporary shows that do the same thing but better/in a more present moment

it's really easy to watch the show today and laugh at the absurdity of the characters' lives because it all seems so made up

the plot of the show is necessarily very contrived and none of the characters act like normal people because then there would be no drama and no tension
half of the time people have sex wearing some or all of their underwear

i feel like thats me (or at least traditionalism is dead and perhaps watching this will allow me to laugh while being more openminded; not that a tv show would cause me to fling myself out there but at least view sex as less sacred)?

the only characters i relate to are like.. summer roberts and mila in that 70s show (jackie) and disney princesses / others like bridge to terabithia female, but if anything those shows are keeping me the way i am in my bubble reality b/c no boys are like the boys in there. now everyone's just hooking up and dating 3 people at once and i'm like... no thanks :( so yes while i don't agree with these women (idk anything about them so who knows; i like the brunette from what i can tell? and upper ny life) i'm hoping there's a chaste one in there who struggles with it but her girlfriends encourage her. and just to laugh and live through the tales of the other girls lol !

i know i'm super late but it's actually kind of paralyzing to live a life as a super bitch nice girl/stacy who could be getting every guy (and people would be so surprised to find that she's actually keeping her values and very old fashioned) like summer in the oc but .... anyways

You know what is going on when you're hearing a voiceover? You're being lied to. You are listening to someone explain herself, because their actions don't speak for themselves. "I know what it looks like, but I'll explain my thoughts and feelings, and then you'll understand why I did what I've done". You are listening to a narcissist propping up the identity that they are trying to project, when their actions don't match that.

If you could watch this show without the voiceover and just watch their behaviour, you'd see how terrible these people are.

For instance there was one episode where one of the women found some guy who was very good at oral and liked doing it.

They gathered at lunches, giggled about it like crazy, they never mentioned his name, but rather used a nickname (Mr. Pussy), one of them complains about being stressed and the other woman goes "oh yeah, I can lend you Mr. Pussy" like he's a model of vibrator, an object and they passed him around like a peace pipe.

All of this objectification was later explained away by a voiceover where she goes something like "he is like travelling charm that teaches you about yourself" or some shit like that.

They are a terrible role models for women. They teach women to aspire to a high consumption lifestyle and material status symbols (manhattan, constant lunches, prada, etc..), how to be a Mad Men-tier narcissist and objectifier, how everything you do is OK as long as you can reframe it as some sort of learning or beneficial experience for yourself (completely amoral -> what about your effect other people).

And on the subject of love, the shy one (relatively) with the short bald boyfriend never displays anything resembling love toward him. He's like a dual purpose roommate. Someone to bang who is always around but who then transforms into a gay looking friend wearing a pastel sweater so you have someone to go out to eat brunch with. Hardly what I'd call a healthy image of what a boyfriend is.
