Sorry I've never been to /tv/ until the airing of the new Samurai Jack season which is where i started hearing this.

What does it mean and what are its origins? no, not a newfag and i've really never heard it before on any board until /tv/ and recently used occasionally on /o/.

Can rainwater get into the engine via these intakes? That would be bad
3 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>17373534
Yes it can. It could have a slight impact on performance, but if there is enough rain coming down that you need to worry the engine dying, or some crazy shit like hydraulic lock in the cylinder, the driver would have long since said 'fuck this'.

I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Sport, and the bolt appears to be broken or loose. It needs to be replaced in order to gain back the power steering. Anyone know the average price range of getting this fixed at an auto shop?

I need some advice on buying a new car/shitbox. I have been driving my cousin's unused Ford Escape Hybrid for the better part of a year now. I can't keep this up. I also want a small truck. (I will actually use this as a truck.)

To sum up my wants; extended cab, manual for that +1MPG, and reliability/easy repairs.

Here are my top picks and my perceptions of them.

Chevrolet S10
+ACDelco
-typical Chevy fuel pump whine
-all older models

Ford Ranger
+new models available
+popularity and domesticity makes parts cheap
-"disposable(?)" truck

Toyota Tacoma
+Toyota reliability (<2010 I think)
-Toyota tax

As some background I live in New England and would like 4x4. But I will really miss the 28MPG (summer) that the escape gets. My ideal setup is 4banger, 5spd 4x4, extended cab.

What do you think the best comprise is? I really cant spend more than a few grand.

>>
How many grand is "a few"?
>>
>>17373598
A few typically refers to 3 or 4...

I'd say 3500.

Can you be too old to learn to drive well?

I'm 34 now, and while I got and still have my car license from high school, I literally have not once driven a car since: too poor in high school, too poor in university, and have lived mostly abroad in big cities since. I also have my motorbike license and consider myself a pretty expert rider, but piloting a huge barge of a car/truck with shit visibility and no room for manoeuvre, where you sit OFF TO THE FUCKING SIDE, and the steering is only vaguely connected to the wheels, seems too intimidating to try at this point which is why I haven't.

Any tips on how to learn since I'm not going to drop money on classes since I'm already legal? Would a manual present any added difficulty considering I'm already well familiar with the concept from motorcycles?

are you asian?
>>
>>17373318
Nope white Canadian.

But I haven't lived in Canada in years so motorcycles made sense. But I realize not being able to drive a car is something stopping me from moving back to Canada (Canada by transit in the Winter is suffering).

Is changing of the oil really necessary? I haven't changed the oil in my new financed mustang for 30,000 miles and it's perfectly fine.

I keep on hearing that synthetic oil is bad for an old engine and can damage it, is this true?

Im just getting into cars and Im getting my first ever oil change(im talking about for me, not the car) for my car(04 corolla) with 170k miles, would synthetic harm it?

Everywhere I go online its either a yes or no, which one is true and why?
9 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>17373213
I have never heard that synthetic can be bad for your engine wtf
>>
>>17373213
it's only bad if you flip from conventional to synthetic repeatedly, and all it really does is leak more and require new seals.
>>
I've heard about this for motorbikes but not cars. The potential issue is that synthetic oils often have a lot of lubricants added, which in a wet clutch bike can make the clutch slip. Don't see why it'd be a problem in a car though.

I'm at a crossroad, guys.

I'm going to be getting myself an STI, should I go for the Sedan or Hatchback? 2007-2013

I don't care about the boy racer wing, but I also would like to have some storage space.

What do?

Get the hatchback. Both body styles have identical perfomance but you get more space with the hatch.

Need a srs redpill

So basically time for me to move on and I have a good chunk of money saved up for a truck

>I'm looking at up to 25k if it has to come to that but here's the situation

>Dodge ram
>Diesel
>4x4
>Automatic
>No subframe rust
>Year 96-98
>Year 03-10
>Year 2015

I'd like the newer one, but the older diesels are legit at 24v

What do you guys think, any truck fags here?

Get some new tires and shut the fuck up

Posted in /b/ first. Thought it'd make more sense to post here.

My car was making a ticking noise and I knew immediately that it was the timing belt(pas experiences). So I took it to the Honda dealer just to get a diagnosis, not for the repair. Literally as I popped the hood in front of one of the honda mechanics and 1/5 of the serpentine belt snapped.

Long story short, from what the diagnosis says, I'll need a new timing belt (belt didn't snap so I'm pretty sure the pistons aren't damaged, ((thank god)), a new crankshaft pulley, a new serpentine belt and a new serpentine belt tensioner, and new anti freeze. They quoted the repair at 1475. My question to all of you is this, am I better off taking it to a local (5 star according to google) repair shop? What kind of price of repair should I be looking at? I know timing belt repair runs around 600-800. 1475 is a lot of money I don't have.

My engine is in savable state from what I know, I've gone to /b/ in times of need before, for some reason when I need others opinions this is my go to. It hasn't failed me before.

If more info is needed just ask and I will give all I can.
Thanks in advance.

Pic related, just my old car vs my new one. New one is fucking broke help.

I think the obvious thing to do is get an estimate from that local repair shop to have a clear idea of what the price difference is. Dealerships will generally always charge more. That said, I just so happened to be doing a very similar job to my own car and have spent less than $100. If you have any mechanical inclination and the tools, it shouldn't be too difficult.

or it could be the serpentine belt that spontaneously snapped?

Hey /o/, I'm a fucking retard and don't know shit about working on cars past changing oil and maybe changing a tire, but I really want to learn and am trying to get a job at some small auto service place. What are things I need to know to not look like a complete dumbass there?

Things someone who works at said service place said they do there:
Oil
Brakes
Transmission
Inspection
Wheels
Alignment
Probably other stuff but I forgot.
