Changing flats without pinching the innertube
Adjusting brakes and tuning dereailers
Replacing chains and using quick links
REcabeling bikes

In that order, and that should take care of a majority of the issues you'll have to deal with.

Prey tell, how did you get a job in a field you know nothing about?

In this economy?

You're either a pretty girl with big tits (fat chance on 4chan) or a spoiled little shit who got the job handed to you.

Either way, fuck off.

The US standard railroad gauge (width between the two rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That's an exceedingly odd number. Why was that gauge used? Train

Because that's the way they built them in England, and the US railroads were built by English expatriates.

Why did the English build them like that? Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who built the pre-railroad tramways, and that's the gauge they used.

Why did "they" use that gauge then? Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools that they used for building wagons which used that wheel spacing.

Okay! Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing? Well, if they tried to use any other spacing, the wagon wheels would break on some of the old, long distance roads in England, because that's the spacing of the wheel ruts.

So who built those old rutted roads? The first long distance roads in Europe (and England) were built by Imperial Rome for their legions. The roads have been used ever since. And the ruts in the roads? Roman war chariots first formed the initial ruts, which everyone else had to match for fear of destroying their wagon wheels. Since the chariots were made for (or by) Imperial Rome, they were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing.

The United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches derives from the original specification for an Imperial Roman war chariot. Specifications and bureaucracies live forever. So the next time you are handed a specification and wonder what horse's ass came up with it, you may be exactly right, because the Imperial Roman war chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the back ends of two war horses. Thus, we have the answer to the original question.

Now the twist to the story . . .

There's an interesting extension to the story about railroad gauges and horses' behinds. When we see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, there are two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokol at their factory in Utah. The engineers who designed the SRBs might have preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from the factory to the launch site. The railroad line from the factory had to run through a tunnel in the mountains. The SRBs had to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track is about as wide as two horses' behinds. So, the major design feature of what is arguably the world's most advanced transportation system was determined over two thousand years ago by the width of a Horse's Ass!

I've ridden in JP and saw more mommy-bikes with baskets than road bikes. Saw a bunch of dudes on bikes with small wheels, anything from 16"-26" but mostly 20" and a lot of folders.
So I don't get this shit, the guys making it are probably all french/italian bike enthusiasts that are way too romantic about bikes.

I bought myself a used bike and want to know if I would be taken seriously for wearing a helmet. I ride 5 miles to school and 5 miles back so a total of 10 a day. My question is should I be wearing a helmet? I don't want to come across as a tryhard but then again I want to be safe. Should I wear a helmet for such a short ride? If you saw someone on campus with a helmet what would your reaction be?

What the fuck, are you 12? You say 'campus' so I assume you're in college, but you're asking:
>will the other kids laugh at me if I wear a helmet?
For fuck's sake you're supposedly an adult now, what the hell do you care what someone else thinks?

You obviously want our 'permission' to do it, so here it is: Wear the damn helmet, it's a reasonable safety precaution. Now stop thinking like you're back in 6th grade and stop worrying about what the 'other kids' think.

So get a BIG flag. And not just any flag, but the national flag. I remember seeing a guy on a recumbent with big ass fleur-de-lys.

That way, if a motorist hit you, you can say they hate your country and FREEDOM (if you're in burgerland).

I rode my bicycle 6000 miles this summer from MA to WA (with a lot of long detours - it's less than 3000 via I-90).

100% solo and self-supported. 0 hotels/motels, paid-for campgrounds only in National Parks, off-days only for hiking.

Ask me anything.

The cast thing on the back is to stretch the tendons in my wrist which have been very tight since a (car, not bike) accident last winter.

It's a 2011 Trek 520.

Tent is a LL Bean Microlight FS2, pictured here with self-repaired pole near Cisco, UT. I won't say it's the lightest/best in the world, but they mailed a replacement pole to Vernal for me after I broke one, for free, which was nice.

I used a Trek TK II as my sleeping bag, with a dirt cheap, 3/4 length inflatable pad. A big reason I like the sleeping bag is that it unzips all the way, so it works as a blanket for hot evenings.

Hello /n/,

I did a 1x10 conversion on my Giant stance 2 and ive run into a bit of an issue.

When you pedal backwards the chain slips down several cogs. Some people have told me this is normal but id prefer it not to. The chain is really tight, like no slack at all tight. Will loosening i.e adding more chain, fix this? My RD is at a constant tension due to the chain. If this wont work will I have to shell out for the XT crankset to fix? I used the OG alivio which is spaced slightly off.

>>
This is a common issue for 1x although it's more of a thing for 1x11 rather than 1x10. There is no real solution AFAIK.
>>
Are your gears set up and indexed properly and is your rear derailleur not bent?
Check those things and maybe chain length or b tension could be issues too.
If it's none of those things, I'm stumped champ.
Best of luck anon.
>>
Check your chainline!
your single chainring should be inline with the center of your cassette

If it's sitting outboard of that centerline, sure, the chain will want to fall outwards to the smaller cogs.

hey /n/

what could i power with a hub dynamo?

i was first gonna install some indicators with a small battery, switch & relais. but people have been saying that it won't work.

i'm no electrician, but i thought like they won't be used all the time and when needed i could get the power directly from a 6v battery which will be charged all the way when not used.

would this work?

A love egg. You know you want to.
>>
A couple dynamo lights also have a USB port so you can hook up one of those rechargable lithium packs.

When there is no load on the dynamo there is less drag, so there is a benefit to not generating power.
>>
>>1036557
>Oh look it's THIS thread again
All dynamo hubs generate a MAXIMUM of 3 watts (6 volts at 500mA).
The output voltage varies with road speed therefore so does the total output power generated.
It's not enough to much of anything with other than run a single small headlight.
Most electronics won't tolerate the power going on and off when you start and stop, or how variable the voltage is.
You couldn't even charge your phone from it because of the power starting, stopping, and varying so much.
The best you could do is charge a VERY SMALL battery pack, and unless you ride for hours and hours a day you won't charge it all the way.
Really, seriously, honestly, DO THE MATH, you'll discover everything I'm saying is true and that it's not worth the trouble and expense to add this to your bike, it won't do what you want it to do, it's just meant to run a headlight and that's ALL it's meant to do.

Greetings /n/

as many of you know the Festive 500 are coming up. A group of friends and I are planning to do it in one go as others have done before. My longest ride so far was 340km but that was in summer so in addition to the distance this will be even harder. Not sure if I can do it but I will try.

Anyway: Does anyone have exprience with this kind of distance or more. What tips can you give me except the obvious things like sensible pacing and regular eating/drinking? I'm an experienced rider but have never tried this distance under these circumstances.
I will be riding in northern europe, temperatures will likey be around the freezing point so not super cold.

One thing you might want to try is a pace that puts your exertion quite a bit below what you'd normally do. Normally I ride with my HR in the 140s, but I've had several long rides where other people were bonking so my HR was high 120s at the slower pace. I rode a lower cadence and I found I didn't sweat as much or burn as much energy.

Longest I've done is 428 km in just under 24 hours elapsed time. This time of year you'll have more time riding in the dark than I did.
>>
>>1036028

that's pretty impressive.
did you train up to this or did you just go for it.
I'm working up to 120km right now. nutrition is holding me back mostly.

do you just keep eating bananas as you go in fixed intervalls ?
do you use any kind of additive to your water ?

I've been thinking, a drink high in carbs and maybe some protein would be great
>>
>>1036086
I've been doing 200 and 300 brevets for a few years before my first 400 and had a 200 and two 300s done in the weeks leading up to the 400.

For solo rides up to about 160 km I usually just bring some bottles of high calorie Ensure (355 calories in a 235 ml bottle). Drinking one after 1.5 - 2 hours then another ever hour after that. Eating smaller amounts at a shorter interval would probably be better, but I never get around figuring out what a convenient on bike food would be.

Doing brevets with a group we stop a few times at restaurants so I don't carry as much, but I like to eat something just before a restaurant stop due to the digestion lag between when you eat and when those calories kick in. I mostly just use plain water, though I might pick up a sport drink along the way to mix things up.
