Phosphorous mortar rounds.

Let's have a good history thread. From your readings in history would you say that war has been a net positive or negative for humans. Or to make it less antagonistic what are good and bad parts of war from a historical perspective.

For example it has been shown that wars in general tend to promote social equality. Especially as thearly scale of the war increases. This in part because to get the poorer people to fight you must give them things and these things come from the rich who actually have stuff.
>>
Hear me out for a second. War is awful, but I still think of it as a net positive, in the long-term at least. Nothing drives the development of science and technology as much as warfare does. World War I is a pretty good example of this. It started with cavalry and ended with tanks and aircraft.
>>
>>2463135
The question is would those advancements have taken place anyway and is it worth the cost for accelerating technological development

Is living in a post-facts society a natural out growth of living in a society that has fully embraced post modernism. I am saying since we are living in a state of constant war between opposing narratives why be concerned with objective when post-modernism undermines objective truth. With the elimination of the meta-narrative than the need to fight for your preferred truth becomes that much more necessary to understanding your place in this universe.

The whole "post-fact" idea implies a previous era of objective truth which did not exist.

The single most deadly famine in the Russian Empire, from 1891 to 1892, is estimated to have killed around 200,000 people.

The two most deadly famines in the Soviet Union, the 1921-22 famine in Povolzhye and the 1932-33 Holdomor, are estimated to have killed from 5 to 10 million people each.

Commies still defend this shit.

Why are there people in the Western world that unironically think that the Enlightenment was a mistake and want to bring back monarchism?

I would argue that the speed that decisions can be made nowadays makes consensus that much more important than decisiveness.

>Integralism
IS AND HOW IT WORKS

they're bullshit like every other non scientific ism
>>

>corporatism
society its organized politically by social class, like something akin to the guild system of the middle ages (which was an inspiration)
>Syndicalism
trade unions run the economy as an alternative to capitalism. in theory it isn't limited by the nation but is spread all over the world.
>National Syndicalism
syndicalism but within the boundaries of the nation state. over time though the original syndicalist ideas were diluted out. It found the most success in italy, where the natsyndicalists were extreme nationalists and were antidemocratic, antimarxist and antipacifist. They wanted to overthrow italy's parliamentary monarchy and replace it with a technocratic economy where all classes were accomodated and unified in their interests (i.e. it had corporatist elements). They believed Italy needed to get colonies in order to rid itself of exploitation from France and Britain. As they saw it italy was a "proletarian nation". A lot of the national syndicalists went on to become fascists.
>Integralism
provided the inspiration for national syndicalism (NS). it was founded by french radical national maurras, and it shared a lot of features with NS. Like NS it was agressively nationalist, anti-individualist, anti-liberal. It advocated statism and corporatism/class unity/guild system/ trade unionism (depending on whichever advocate you talked to in the early 20th century). I get the impression that it was more conservative than NS, in that it supported hierarchy, authoritarianism, conservatism/catholic orthodoxy (whereas NS was modernist/futurist, even atheistic and anti-clerical). I'm even sure integralism could be monarchist, and the monarch would be a figure for national unity.
>>
>corporatism
Term in social science used for the inclusion of business and labour interests into policymaking, as opposed to pluralism which is more associated with lobbyists. The prime example of corporatism is the so-called 'tripartism', which is an ongoing partnership between business, labout and state.

Some will say that corporatism is strictly a fascist idea. It is not.

I'd say I'm a smart guy, I'm in high level classes in all subjects, but history is by far and away my favorite. The problem is, I really don't know what to do with it.

If y'all could just throw out any and all careers and professions you can think of directly related to history, that'd be great. It's not like I don't know ANY (obviously you've got like anthropologist, professor, curator, etc) I just wanna get a good idea of what I can do in life with a bachelors/masters/doctorate/general interest in history.

Why are people so proud of their country or heritage?

shouldn't you be proud of things that you yourself have accomplished?

Isn't it retarded to be proud of stuff you didn't earn or work for?
16 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>2462649
There are different kinds of proud. Being proud of yourself, and being proud in others. When people say they're proud of their country, they mean that they're proud of all the people who worked to make that country great, and hope to continue contributing in the greatness of their country.
>>
>>2462658
So are you saying that people are proud to be a part of a group? And so they are proud to be a part of a country that they see as great?

I'm still having a hard time wrapping my head around this. Most people are in the country that they're in because they just happened to be born there. Even if you see that place as great, it all just goes back to it being retarded to be proud of something you didn't work for.

You don't have to work to be born in the place that you're born in. it just happens.
>>
I think that people give different meanings to what pride actually gives motion, just as any abstract word such as love, honor and good and evil. It's a social regulator for a pattern for a social being to adapt itself.

If you dont have national pride, you might be ill seen by those who take part in using that word for a behaviour that is palatable for a good life. Yet some live with the desire to love lack of commitment to the country they live in. But since you were born, you are thrown in a relation of power between everything that lives, so you might be as well join the fold of those who favor you while others do not or might help but you don't know for sure. The concept of national pride helps you go through that.

I think it is a useful artifice, but blinds people with stupid criteria for living which make the world as it is.

>Libyans and Syrians are much lighter

Somebody tell me how there can still be serious debate about what the Ancient Egyptians were? At least the southern Egyptians should have a major East African (see Somalis, Nubians, and Amhara) background.

Egyptian Dynasties changed their Kingship to various different racial profiles. While I agree that general populace might have been an admixture of phenotypes thus Brown. The Ruler elites changed.

The earlier dynasties are difficult to pinpoint but middle dynasties before unification could have been Semitic in origin and thus Middle-eastern in complexion. After Nubian conquest, it would have been black for brief time while gradually eschewing towards brown.

..."With respect to iron, and unlike copper metalurgy, ironworking was discovered just once in history of mankind somewhere in the Middle East, and spread from there all over Eurasia and Africa. Obviously, the technique didn't reach the Americas."

No, Iron Working came about independently in the Middle East, Europe, and China.
>>
No, that shit got discovered a couple different times.
>>
Iron working was introduced to Europe in the late 11th century BC,[21] probably from the Caucasus, and slowly spread northwards and westwards over the succeeding 500 years. The widespread use of the technology of iron was implemented in Europe simultaneously with Asia.
