If you were a political figure in the distant past with only modest resources at your disposal and you needed to convince people to die for you, how would you do it?
I've thought about this a great deal and here's what I'd do.
First I would claim that there was an all powerful supernatural entity that exists and that I have been given both a sign of that entity's existence and also knowledge of them. I might for example claim that I had a vision, or that I was visited in private by his messengers.
Secondly I would claim that this entity has a set of rules for men to live by which are actually rules that would benefit me if people adopted them although I wouldn't say that last bit, for example that one should be martyred before they apostate, that there is a duty in all of us to gain converts to the laws of the supernatural entity, to give unto caesar and also to turn the other cheek, and so on.
Thirdly I would claim that people who did not follow these laws would suffer eternal torment.
Fourthly I would claim that people who do follow these laws would be rewarded with eternal paradise.
Fifthly I would 'prove' my claims were true by asking my friends to verify my claims and/or point to texts or alleged supernatural events, preferably written or having allegedly occurred in the past, that can be used to justify my assertions but not disproven.
What would you do?
