Hyatts work was absolutely groundbreaking at beginning to shed some light on what was, up to that point, a fairly well obscured tradition of folk magic. I would caution you heavily, to be aware that the responses from witnesses can *not* be trusted. Some of the people were completely uneducated on the subject matter, some were very educated, some wanted to tell the truth, some outright fabricated bullshit because they didnt want to participate in telling the "secrets" of their folk tradition. None of them were vetted in any way beyond "are you black? know anything about hoodoo?" basically.

It is very important reading for understanding the roots of conjure in america, but it cant really be trusted for a lot of accuracy.

I know this response is super super late and hopefully OP will see it, but Id be happy to answer any other questions I can.

Hoodoo != Voodoo
They are different traditions entirely.
Voodoo is an initiatory religion based on the dahomey indigenous spiritual practices of africa, as they descended and changed throughout the african diaspora.

Hoodoo is a magical practice, it has many tributaries from all around the world, africa, the middle east, england, ireland, the netherlands south america and the carribean.

Hoodoo is to Voodoo as witchcraft is to Wicca.

There are practitioners of one, that don't practice the other, though many practice both and may not be able to separate them in their individual practice. They are however fundamentally different things.

If we look at this in rational way.
Lets say you died.
They buried you under ground without coffin.

This is you at the start of the game, it is a reference to ones birth seemingly out of the void.

We are the ash and we seek some sort of meaning during our lives. In the game you play as Ashen One/Champion of Ash, there is no real defined goal in DS3 and there are quite a few endings, just like in life.

In short DS3 to me was a metaphorical and condensed representation of a human life from start to finish. We are currently living the life of the ashen one and when we die we become the champion of ash as we have traversed the trials and tribulations of the mortal realm. We are the blessed accursed undead.
