A lot of the "preparations of the operator, etc" in ancient grimoires are completely unnecessary, and occasionally intended to discourage the uninitiated, for various reasons, or to completely render the process inoperable. The same holds true for the specificity/minutiae of some rituals and spells. On the other hand, some details are absolutely essential. Best way to find which are which is to experiment with what you have. You have to believe in yourself and cannot doubt for a moment that your operation will be a success. Also, no human/animal sacrifices, no blood, no bathing in rivers, no burying boxes at a crossroads should be necessary (to paraphrase a beginner's magick book). remember too that many of the grimoires were more like notebooks rather than instructions- so, just as they will include unnecessary operations, they will frequently be lacking crucial instructions, as the 'authors' of the grimoires already knew these and did not need to write them down. a grimoire is basically a magickal diary. Do it. I work in mental health institute. I have worked with 100s of patients who claim they 'could do this or that' (bend time, travel to parallel universes, communicate with demons/angels, see the future etc) but they 'never would' because it's wrong/inappropriate/something's stopping them. You know what they all have in common?
- theyre all in there for these things they 'can do'
- they all never do the things they 'can do'
- they won't be released because they claim they can do these things and as such are deemed crazy.
- occasionally one will try, fail, realise their only human and it's all ridiculous and be released within 6 months.

pretty sure the backstory on that creepypasta, like most creepypasta, is that somebody on the internet made up a creepy story.

it's known that a lot of "limits of human endurance" kind of unethical experiments were done on people during WWII by both Japan and Germany, and i'm pretty sure sleep deprivation was on the list of things they tried. i don't think any of them reported that sleep deprivation resulted in demons taking over people's bodies but i guess that probably wouldn't be in mainstream history books.

Stalin and Mao were known for a lot of later experiments in brainwashing so it wouldn't be surprising if they tried something like this, but i've never heard of it.
