I've been told many, many times that they aren't that good and only noobs find them op. Yet everytime they play protoss the black templar is their go-to unit.
Seriously, they are cheap, you get them early, stealth is super annoying to deal with, and they do an absurd amount of damage.

Regarding you wanting to emulate duke3d's shotgun behavior with the pellets not penetrating enemies, i loaded up duke with a hunch and sure enough I found something there. The lack of penetration is a function of the enemy ai and not of the weapon. Duke's baddies stay solid until the last frame of their death animation, throughout which they impede your movement and you can push them at a small cost of speed, but they also retain their shootable property at the same time which is what stops the bullets, and not just the shotgun bullets either.

The Amiga is a very interesting platform but there's really only a precious few games on it that fall into the goldilocks zone between the literal thousands of "indie"/straight-up-amateurish titles and titles that were good enough to be ported to PC and even some consoles, though in many cases the Amiga version of those games looks and sounds the best.

Action games all have a strange looseness to their physics that I can't exactly describe or speculate on the reason for but if you've played Shadow of the Beast or Risky Woods or Stormlord on Genesis you'll know what I mean.

Of the retro computers I personally find MSX to have the most interesting "console feeling" games with just the right amount of additional depth offered by disk storage and full keyboard but Amiga is my second choice. I really want a CD32. I have an A500 that has something wrong with it but I haven't motivated myself to work on it.

Not a great example, Wonder Boy 3 wasn't exactly the toppest tier with it's FM music. There are games where the FM music truly blows away the PSG but this ain't one.
