Headed out to Japan for 3 weeks (also gonna make a 4 day stop in Seoul)
As a first timer to both countries, what would yall recomend doing? I would prefer to avoid very touristy spots/cheap tips
Also got a 7 day Jrail pass to see a couple other cities...favorites? Osaka and Sapporo seem interesting from a distance
Seoul tips are welcome aswell
Thankyou for your time!

Go to Kyoto, it is touristy but it's worth your time if you like architecture. Nagoya is basically little tokyo. Akita is nice as well, not a lot to do but the scenery is fantastic.

It really depends what you want to get out of your trip. Culture? Food? Nightlife?
>>
>>1113098 Thanks! Will look into those
I really dig the urban/neon/fashion elements of the country(s)
Aka: seeing/buying some of that futuristic/iconic tokyo look

Would love to shop for some sick souvenirs at a great/best price

Hey, first time /trv/ poster, currently on vacation. I just had to post this.

German Tourist
> Gets up at 5 in the morning
> entire family uncomplainingly eats a quick breakfast
> happily chats with locals
> spends hours hiking through jungle and mountains to reach viewing area
> once there takes 5 photos and spends a good 45 minutes admiring view
> hikes back, happy with how day has gone
> buys small, local keepsake
> returns home at 11 after experiencing local nightlife

American Tourist
> Gets up at 10
> drags down family to catch last few minutes of Continental Breakfast
> 'why is all the good food gonnnnnnnne'
> avoids all foreigners except when necessary
> books expensive-ass minibus tour
> gets bussed to destination in climate, controlled box
> takes 40 photos in 5 minutes then leaves
> gets expensive as hell 'souvenir'
> spends rest of day watching cable with totally exhausted family

Japanese Tourist
> emerges from shadows
> talks in fast-forward
> takes thousands of photos in seconds
> vanishes
> you will never see him again

Prove me wrong

German tourists annoyed the hell out of me when I was backpacking in New Zealand. I keked every time I heard one of them had their campervan looted by maoris.

I always recommend Joe Goes (Badge of Shame)
https://www.youtube.com/user/BadgeofShame

He's a memer that tries (but not too hard) to make people uncomfortable. The best episodes are where the people actually go with it and some interesting bantz are had.

>>1111742
Post some of those, then.

Hes not really comedy but BennyHBK is pretty much completely unknown and makes fairly good travel videos.

If you want something more mainstream that has travel in it I would definitely check out Casey Neistat's channel (yes I know he doesn't focus on travel he just happens to travel some so he has made some good travel videos)

Also you might like the High on Life youtube channel if you don't already know about it (again not exactly comedy but they make pretty good videos even though some are hit and miss)

'Sup nerds, your resident Bulgarian here to recommend you to visit the country and answer questions you might have about it. As with the previous thread, I'll try and respond with an image I've taken myself so you can see some non-meme stuff that locals will do and are worth seeing/doing. To those that have previously visited, please share your experiences.

Country in general:
Pros:
>4 distinct seasons, activities for each one
Beaches, Ski, Mountain Tourism, Architectural tourism, ATV/Horseback riding/etc

>Cheap af
0.35EUR (0,40USD) for 500ml water bottle
0.5EUR (0.60USD) loaf of bread (1kg)
12.07EUR (13.76USD) cross-country train (bus is faster and almost the same)

>Civilized and peaceful, guaranteed
Tfw no civil war or ethnic conflicts (Serbia all the time)
Tfw no government censorship or explosions every 2 seconds (Turkey)
Tfw no refugees cuz very secure borders and the accepted refugees are only in the displacement centers anyway

>Still in Europe (and EU, so EZ mode with regards to border)
With RyanAir or WizzAir it will cost you more to travel within England than to spend a weekend in Bulgaria.

Cons:
>Shitty administration for citizens
Baggage from the soviet years

>Shitty roads for sure
The conditions of the asphalt roads aren't acceptable in 2016, especially when we pay such taxes on them

>Parking on the pedestrian sidewalks
Soviets artificially restricted the amount of cars built, so roads and parking were plentiful 20 years ago. Not now.

Cont. with some city and location reviews.

Sofia, capital city and where I live
Pros:
>Architecture
Thracian earliest recorded settlements, Roman (Byzantines), Bulgarian, Ottoman, Soviet buildings can be seen, touched and entered to this day. The city's architecture is like a ring, oldest in the middle and younger as you leave the center. Pieces of Byzantine/Bulgarian fortresses are in the middle, Tzarist architecture (1876-1944) inhabits most of the city's center stepping out to brutalist soviet living quarters in the outskirts.

The meme sights would include St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Second largest orthodox cathedral on the Balkans, but the prettiest, in it's Neo-Byzantine style and gold-plated domes. Includes a museum in the Crypt. The Russian Orthodox church is meters away, colorful and beautiful. All churches are unique, so I would recommend seeing every single one. Sofia is also the place

In the same are you can view the People's Assembly, Sofia University (compared to Serbia's uni, ours is a legitimate sight). National Theater Ivan Vazov, the Tzar's palace (now a museum of art). National Palace of Culture is a concrete behemoth, some other stuff that might be apparent and I'm missing them now.

>Transportation:
Pretty well-developed metro/bus/tram/trolley system. Ticket is 0,5EUR for a single ride.
I would recommend the transport over a personal vehicle, as it's cheaper, versatile and goes faster due to dedicated bus-lanes and some tram roads are prohibited for cars.

>Pretty green city
The Borisova Gradina is a big park located off-center. Small ponds, in one you can rent a boat. Great way to relax for an hour or so.
At least 2 or 3 as-big parks layin' around.

>Near-by green/ski tourism:
Borovets, Vitosha mountain and lake Pancharevo are 30-60 minutes away by bus or 2 (for a total of 5EUR). rent ski, snowboard and boats, then go back to the city.
>>
>>1111726
>Sofia is also the place where a mosque, an orthodox church and a Jewish temple are the closest to each other (within RPG range) on the Balkans, but we're cool

>Safe
Recently I was giving a tour for a friend visiting from Argentina. We were out until 3 in the morning and coming back to my place, we saw many women just walking around, either home from bars or walking their dog at absurd hours. I do most of my shopping at 4 in the morning and walk both ways to the shops. You really have to try hard to get in trouble in Sofia.

Cons:
>Parking in the sidewalks
>Kinda trash layin' around, not inhumanely littered, but def enough to be noticable
>Costs are higher than in the rest of the country
>Can be done in 2 days

As noted, with a decent guide, you only need 2 days in this city.
Budget for said days w/o hotels and special activities 30EUR to cover your food, drinks around +souvenir.

What's the deal with languages? In terms of practicality is it
>Bulgarian
>Russian
>English

If I was having trouble with languages, how much would a guide/interpreter cost, 20 Euros a day?

Are there gypsy problems? Or did they go to western europe, and it's just a few areas of them to avoid?

Hello, guys. I'm going to europe for the first time, with my 2 uncles and doing a touristy route (paris, london, berlin, praga, budapest). If I was funding the trip, I wouldn't do this, but w/e not my choice.

HOWEVER, I have 2 extra weeks to go wherever I want to after that.
My interests are :
-people, culture
-interesting shit

I don't care much about monuments, etc, but seeing huge things or great nature might be nice.

I thought about Russia (to get to know that crazy place) or Sweden (to see if they are really as cucked as /pol/ says).

Any other ideas?

Cheers

If you had 1 - 2 weeks anywhere in Spain, where/what would you be doing? I don't know almost anything about what there is to see, but I will be on my way back to USA from Israel in early August and want to stop over somewhere I've never been in Europe.

I like history, good food and drinks, don't really care about beaches much but seeing the ocean/Mediterranean would be cool, speak Spanish fluently, want something of the hostel experience, and like rural areas/natural beauty as much as cities.

Spain General I suppose

Travelling to New York in 13 days.
I'll be living in upper east side, near the 96th street.

My friend, who's been in NYC is trying to scare me, saying it's very dangerous and shit but he's also known for bullshitting for his own enjoyment so I don't really believe him.

How is it currently?
I know Bronx is a bad area, but I don't plan on going there anyway.

Manhatten is retardedly safe dude. Literally a festering shithole of gestapo police, theres more cops in NYC than most countries have soldiers in their militaries. That being said, if you arnt white and carry contraband, it will be very unsafe for you for this same reason.

You can pretty much go anywhere in manhatten and the city in general during the day, at night manhatten is still very safe but places like the bronx and parts of brooklyn can be sketch, however even those areas are much better these days. A couple of years ago i had to walk through the puerto rican area of brooklyn (bayridge? Bay something? Idk) in the middle of the night, alone, as my white skeletor self wearing a tie dye shirt and a back pack full of valuable shit - the same night all the ricans were drunk and rowdy from the puerto rican day parade. Nothing bad happened.

Upper manhattan (harlem) can also be a little sketch at night but even then thats in the areas dozens of blocks north of you. Obviously follow common sense - dont take shortcuts down dark alleys, dont go in parks at night, anywhere dark and seedy is probably a bad idea.

Realistically NYC is probably one of the safest large cities in the world, *especially* manhatten.

Hope this helps.
>>
>>1110373

Ok, cool!
I already know that if it gets late and I'm far away I'm likely to take a cab anyway, not because of safety but because of laziness.

I've heard so many different stories about the area I'll be living in, some say it starts to get unsafe already at 80th street, some say 98th is the sweet spot, so it's good to hear that it's not as bad as some people try to make it out to be.

Not walking through dark alleys or parks as night applies to my city in Sweden as well, so I wouldn't do that anyway.

Thanks for the advice.

Thinking about moving to London, I have some friends there, but not the circles I'm looking for, I have a lot of artistic projects regarding anything, looking for people on the "alternative" side, the minimalistic-nihilistic-not desiring much money type, I don't have much money either rn. I don't want anything fancy
Is it a good place for people like this and to make a living out of art, or just a shitty job to get by and do my thing? What are the best boroughs to live like that (as in not caring much that its a bad neighborhood, but one where I might get killed)?
49 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Most of the art types I know are bankrolled by their bourgeois parents. Otherwise you'll need a job that pays to get by. Regardless of whether you can sell your art or not, London is one of the most expensive cities in the world
>>
>>1108592
I know it's quite expensive, but I really like the place, mainly I like cities with a good art culture where english is spoken (I'm Spanish, I could go to Barcelona, but I really like the english language and culture) though I also like the US, Sacramento, NY, LA, SF (only been in NY though) so it really comes to living in an english-spoken country/city where modern art is valued and living cheaply (or just not really struggling) is possible
>>
Honestly man, London isn't a place where you can get by working minimum with less than full time. Almost all of my friends that don't have big boy/girl jobs are just barely scraping by. I'm pretty good at making money and even I have reservations about moving there. I love the city too but it's fast paced or die

Will be heading out to Mexico City, Mexico soon.

What are some must see/do's there and anything after that.

I plan to visit historical sites and some museums

after that it's mainly nightlife but i'm also down to check out other shit.

Any mexican anons please help out first time visitor. give me a rough guide or anything to the capital city and surrounding areas.

go to the anthropology museum. it's really top 10 museums in the world and is in a dope location. might as well go to the castillo de chapultepec while you're there.

go to tlatelolco and sit on a bench and think about the government killing 500 people in that spot and its historicity. think about what 1968 meant as a year and mexico's unlikely involvment in that.

go to clubs if you want. i am the first person to say that DF is a world class city and is every bit as cosmopolitan as any other place on earth, but the night life has always bored me. it kind of sucks.

go to see murals. colegio de san ildefonso, secretaria de educacion publica, bellas artes, world trade center, the UNAM campus, frida's house, the siqueiros room in castillo chapultepec, etc. the mexican mural movement in the early 20th century is really an unparalleled outburst of creative energy.

other odds and ends: go to teotihuacan. it's a full day trip and exhausting, but climb the pyramids and know that what you see is likely less than 5% of the original city. hang out in the plaza de coyoacan. get coffee from el jarocho and eat at the comedores on calle higuera, especially the pozole. el rey de tacos is close by on the corner of hidalgo and division del norte -- its one of the best spots in the city. see a bullfight. it's fucking brutal but the plaza mexico is the largest bull arena in the world. take a boat tour through xochimilco, but don't pay more than 300 pesos/hour.

ask me about anything else. this isn't even scratching the surface.
>>
>>1114257
What are the hostels like their? What is there to eat?
>>
>>1114263
hostels are cheap. i stayed at one a few blocks south of the zocalo and it was maybe $20 for a 2 double bed room. split 4 ways and its fucking cheap and in the center of the city. i'm sure there's a lot of options like that.

eat shit on the streets. don't be a fucking pussy. ask for surtido and sesos and lengua and tripa and all the good shit you can't get back home. the cuisine is sort of a mex of everything. you might also be in season for chiles en nogada, depending on the time you go. you'll know if you are, every place in the whole city will have them

Where do I start?

Cambodia is overrun with tourists and people trying to score drugs/sex.

Go down south to the beach and give Kep a visit. Less tourists and the seafood is to die for. You can rent some scooters and explore the area and then come back to drinks and seafood by the water.
>>
>>1113549
Ditto. Head for the coast, Cambodia's in the middle of a pretty terrible drought at the moment.
And as much as I love the place, it is basically a massive shithole, and that is definitely going to be amplified at the moment.

If you have a really big book to read, take a boat to Rabbit Island and chill there a few days. If you want to get ripped and hit on backpackers, head to Sihanookville, and if you want to hate the world go to S4

S5? I can't remember. The Toeul Seong Genocide Museum.

Or go dirtbike riding. There's a bunch of different outfits that run out of Phnom Penh. I used Red Raid and they were pretty awesome

One reason for my trip there has just been trashed and that puts a kink in my plans, now I need to think of more attractions to fill the time gap and make the most of our trip. Well, the Kennedy Space Center is about an hour east of Orlando. You can see a fully intact Saturn V rocket, among other things. ...then there are the major theme parks, of course. I'll provide non-price-related park tips (all you need to know is they are officially the most expensive theme parks on Earth, but people still pay those prices in droves because they are the best theme parks on Earth) if requested.
>>
>>1112745
you can easily spend 4 days at the universal parks alone

If you have an entire day and a car, you could always check out a natural spring
