What does /tg/ think of Feng Shui? I've been thinking of running a wuxia/kung fu action campaign once the holiday season peters out, and I've heard good things about this system, but I've never really seen it mentioned on /tg/ before. Does anyone have any opinions or experience with it?

played it at gencon, it's kind of neat but I really hate the resolution mechanic (1d6 - 1d6). the numbers overall are too big (no I don't want to add +17 to my roll, that's stupid) and initiative is very very important

but it's not a BAD game, it's just not my preferred style.

One Shot did a few playthroughs with it if you want to hear how well it gels with newcomers and as a storytelling medium.

The classes are dumb. Some seem to get all the love and cool moves and others are boring with limited options.

I'm thinking of running a solo campaign of LOTW for my sis to get her into TG. My idea so far is to have her play the daughter of the recently assassinated emperor and have her on a quest for Justice/Revenge al a Kill Bill.
The antagonists of the campaign are going to be the 12 people that planned the death of the emperor, and have a motif based on the Chinese zodiac.
So far I've made
The Rat- the first on the list, entrepreneur/gang leader who took a large bribe to sneak in some assassins on the night of the emperor's birthday celebrations
The Horse- the emperor's most trusted general, honorable man that truly believed that the emperor's death would be the best thing for Shen Zhou. Wields a Guan Dao, uses the horseback martial style probably going to be one of the last bosses
The Dragon- probably just the Fire God at this point.

Can y'all help me fill out the rest of the Zodiac and give me ideas for the campaign? Also LOTW General.

I had a few others too
The Rabbit- one of the Emperor's many concubines and a a great beauty. She loved him dearly but saw Shen Zhou was dying under his rule, poisoned his drink at the party to weaken him, but did not participate in the melee that followed. Uses big-ass sleeves as her weapon, and she's a kind of a big deal in the resplendent Pheonix society

Might help if you listed off the chinese zodiac so that others don't have to go hunting. I'll help:

Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig.

If the god of fire wanted him or anyone dead, why would he need the help of mortals?

Why would you pay for three books when you could have everything in a single publication?

5th edition is practically Rules Cyclopedia, minus the THAC0, but even then THAC0 is just a bit of maths: why can't WOTC just do the decent thing and re-print what is probably the single greatest D&D publication in existence?

5th edition is merely Cyclopedia in the guise of AD&D: it was AD&D that insisted you buy three books in order to play the game. Cyclopedia merely required dice, pen and paper.

We have been robbed, and it is precisely this reason that the highwaymen of WOTC have yet to release Rules Cyclopedia as a reprint: they know that if they did no one would bother buying three books in order to play 5th edition, since they could have the original game as it was.

It may be argued that THAC0 is too mathematically difficult for the average spastic who couldn't afford a decent education, but that is neither here nor there: why should we be deprived of a great publication because of the plebs who simply don't know how to count?

Why is dexterity always the greatest stat or one of the best stats?

Humans are a dexterous race, so we focus more on the applications of dexterity.

Also game designers rarely consider whether or not their games are balanced.

---

You are a weird lizard thing, and you reckon you’re awesome.

Just a while ago, you made a really stupid decision.

It was around this evening that you caught snippets of human conversation that suggested the raids were conducted to capture people alive. You thought this was unexpected, almost unheard of, but also not something you can really dig into considering the circumstances.

Apparently Sera’s point of view differed wildly though, and a few hours ago you found her walking back in the direction of her village with purpose, newly acquired spellbook in hand. You’re almost certain she wasn’t privy to much more information than you, and you’re almost certain she isn’t capable of taking on over a dozen angry green Wild on her lonesome. Even if her people were still alive at the village, and somehow she managed to free them, you can’t imagine a scenario where they’d all be able to escape the inevitable chase from angry goblins riding equally angry wolves.

Despite all that, one sentimental, heartwarming scene later, and for whatever reason you thought it was a good idea to join her in the suicide mission.

Yeah.

You hop west along lower branches, absently watching as Sera runs her fingers across a deep cut made in the trunk of a tree as she walks past, her eyes straining forward to keep you in sight in the darkness. The twisting forest canopy shuts out the moonlight, forcing you to rely on your memory and sense of direction as you jump half blind between the trees.

You’ve made good time in spite of the conditions, still able to keep a much better pace than the humans did in the afternoon, and it takes only a little while for the distant orange glow of flame to peek into your vision.

You slow down and climb to a better vantage point when the forest starts to thin out, and surprisingly the state of the village would not be accurately described as “everything is on fire” or “everything was on fire”. There are signs of battle, and some houses have clearly been subject to more burning than they were designed to take, but much of the place is in tact. You can see torches set up, one by the west gate and one by the north, and judging by the flickering against the various structures of the village there are more within, along with a larger flame somewhere in the center.

You think you see movement near the north gate, but you can’t make out what at this distance.

Sera’s looking up at you. If you want any chance of success (what the hell is success here, anyway?), you’re going to have to be sneaky, and you don’t think Sera has nearly your skill in that area.

Can someone explain why the made surprise as retarded as it is now

http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/rules-answers-november-2015

According to current rules surprise ends after the creature turn, meaning that if you initiate combat from stealth and it gets a decent initiative roll it could go from surprised to no longer surprised before you even land the attack that starts combat, completely negating the rogue crit on surprise attacks. It's also annoying if you want to plan an ambush, for example, say you wait concealed for a team member to circle around to start the encounter with an attack from behind. If you roll your initiative better then him you're fucked, because when you would be first to stumble into the encounter they wont be surprised.

It creates a whole bunch of retarded scenario's that would not exist if you would just resolve the attack that initiates combat first regardless of initiative roll.

Just houserule it as, in a surprise round everything happens fast enough that the creature is unable to react yet

I just do it so that if a creatures is surprised it will go last for the first turn of combat before rolling initiative for it.

Alright, Captain Impostor and her crew have graciously offered to give you and the rest of Marrius' Group a ride to the island fortress of captain Helena. She's still far from a superpower of the sea, but her ranks are growing... less than modest.

Marrius explained along the way that he's also arranged for reinforcements on wyverns to arrive from Dain (sellswords who were friends with him and Riga, calling themselves the New Flight due to several founding members having been related to or trained by the fabled and ill-fated squadron's members), though you'll undoubtedly beat them there. "This mission, I admit," Marrius says to all of you, "is... Rather personal in nature. After all that my grandfather, Durvan, did to weaken the Dories, I cannot sit idly by as their youngest undoes all of his and the rest of Ulir's people's work." After that, he turns and looks towards Une. "For the... Less idealistic of you, I need not even remind you of the substantial bounties every single one of her rank will fetch with Ulir authorities."

You're mostly hanging around by your lonesome after that, briefly being introduced to Sheena and having no particular opinion on her. At the moment, an evening before you expect to reach said island, Colleen has talked you into providing some company. She's alright, so you don't mind, and your time spent is mostly in idle small talk. Eventually, she grows tired and retires, albeit after mentioning that she and Rema are planning on helping out Marrius' Group.

While pacing around the Intelligent System's decks afterwards, you spy Yone and Leigh chatting about something, the small-framed priest leaning against his staff for support.

I turn to Lucy, her golden blonde hair blowing gently on the cold breeze blowing through the trees.

"Fine" I sigh shaking my head as I try to stick my hands into my pockets, only to realize I don't have any...need to fix that, I mean I didn't get the chance to bring a single coat into this world, and I..I don't like how cold it is "Lets get back before Sam throws a fit"

"Oh it's too late for that Krov" She chuckles as she takes a few larges steps to catch up with me "God it's still weird calling you that Katie...How do you call me Lucy so easily?"

"Because, always thought you were pretty girly" I say with an impish grin as I look back at her.

She glares at me and sighs "Oh you're lucky you're eye is already gone sister"

"I'm confused" Little green says "What's going...oh something little green shouldn't know...understood"

Lucy glares at me again "You...You actually made it a TFS reference...godammit"

"Oh like you'd do it anyways" I giggle as the campsite comes into view and I can see Sam sitting on one of the logs we dragged to it, chatting with Minor about something...I can't quite hear what they're saying, but it seems grim judging from the look on my friend's face

He turns, as if he could hear my idle thoughts. his messy black hair falling over his nearly entirely bandaged face as a grin slowly spreads across his lips.

"What, were you two doing eachother's nails or something" He laughs...stiffly "I know you guys may be enjoying the scenery, but I hate nature and the quicker we get out of it the better"

"Yeah, I mean I didn't want to say anything, but camping isn't fun when internet doesn't exist" Minor sighs, sniffling as she wipes her button nose..

Powerful monster hunt and plague the humans.
Normal people are too weak to fight against them.
Some people get through a pact with strange beings the power to fight the monsters.
These people become mad with time and mutate themselves to monsters.

Would that be too dark for an RPG setting?

There's darker.

I mean it's dark as fuck, but it still works. Sometimes a good dark setting is what you want.

What kind of monsters are you thinking? Monster Hunter, Vamps&Weres, Monster Manual?
