I've just now started working on a new game, but I am in serious need of urban city maps, or any modern kind of map, and the site really doesn't have much on its own. I was just wondering if any of you guys had some good sources for that kind of thing. The main problem I'm having is finding them in a high enough quality that stretching them doesn't kill it. I just paid $5.99 for a damn map. That's ridiculous. There has to be another way. Help me, /tg/? (Not sure if this would be considered a request or not. New to the site. Sent here by a friend. Pic holds some relevance and is by Alexander Menet.)

You're kind of sol, OP. Short of a kindly soul sharing a hidden cache of treasure with you, it's a massive paint to find ANY maps, let alone modern ones.
You might be able to cobble together some from here.

They have some modern tiles and stuff.
Anyway, good luck

If you use roll20 you could just abstract buildings as squares and designate doors, and just describe whats inside or draw large furniture. It's infinitely more useful and easy than searching through the web for maps that aren't shitty DnD fantasy encounters or dumb looking sci-fi ships.

In other news, I am working on a Fallout Traveller homebrew that is nearly quarter way done. Looking for any suggestions for possible features or careers or even people who might want to help on the project in some manner.

How do you resolve this?

This is that Expanded Psionics Handbook race that works real well from a purely mechanical standpoint with their Burst power for speed and their natural psionic ability.
Fluffwise, I guess they are some darkskinned humanoids that run really fast.
"Ethiopians?" one of my players did comment.

No, the Xeph.

I don't really like the illustrations or the fluff for D&D 3.5, so I'm going to put together my own little booklet for my campaign with my own illustrations and fluff. It won't be good enough for publication, I think, but I'm sure my players will appreciate it.

Anyway, I'm thinking of turning the xeph for my campaign setting into a race of psionic monkey people that dwell in some frosty mountains. I think I should try to avoid detailing them too much in case the players decide not to interact with them in any way. If they do end up interacting with or playing as the xeph however, I would like to have something to work with.

So... brainstorming!
>>

Overall aesthetic is a combination of Sun Wukong and Planet of the Apes. Wuxia + post-apocalyptic.

I like to play background music during my games. If the players go to xeph villages, or to xeph neighborhoods in the big city, I'll probably play some Yat-Kha:

I'm brainstorming ideas for a D&D 4e retroclone. Ideas/goals of mine:
- drastically reduce feat bloat
- ensure every character is useful/interesting in AND out of combat (perhaps through a new category of fluffy utility powers)
- provide base classes with equally useful powers (no traps or clear picks)
- tweak the skill list (strength-based intimidate, wisdom-based religion, ???)
- minimizing the frequency of conditional +/-1 bonuses since they only ever come into play 5% of the time when activated. 5e's advantage system could work well here, too.
- limiting magic items to the interesting ones instead of boring stat changes (much like 5e claims to do but doesn't really pull off)

More adventurous changes I'm considering include
- limiting it to level 20 (since math and choices get so out of control in epic tier)
- combining strength and constitution since they are both purely combat-related (meaning melee characters are more able to invest in secondary stats for skill use). A fun side effect of this would be that the new stats could spell BASIC (Body, Agility, Senses, Intellect, and Charisma, as suggested by another anon here)
- making roles separate from classes (a fighter could have a knight/defender role, a duelist/striker role, and a warlord/leader role)

What things from 4e would you like to see changed?
What aspects should I focus on keeping or building off of?
Which classes did you find most fun and why?
Which class archetypes are kickass enough to try to make core even if they wouldn't normally be (i.e. "gunmage")

Strike! RPG.
>>
>>44012651
do what I do my own 4e retroclone, make skills and powers share the same list and limits.

basically if you can choose 2 - 3 powers at level 1, you can choose stronger power or a skill power which is shittier but convey an additional use (basically a skill).

Think like pokemon Cut and Rock Smash. By itself it is shit as a power, but it usable as skills outside of combat.

Like in battle, the power "search" help to make enemy defense weaker against you and your allies attack for a duration. Outside of combat, it is used to look for clues and other stuff.

This allow your players to decide if they want to play a skillful character or a powerhouse in combat but a flowerpot during social interaction due to no helpful powers/skills.

Of course, with this rule in place, you have to increase the number of powers they can get but I think you get the idea.

Players have full options on how they want their characters to be.

>What I made.
We were playing Scion, and I decided to go with a guy based off Porter Rockwell. Lots of bonuses to intimidate like effects and he had two pistols. I basically just wanted to play a scary as hell gunslinger who would wade through bullets.

>What the DM saw.
He couldnt get past the Mormon part, since I based the char off Porter Rockwell. He saw it as pic related or like yandere Flanders

>What I actually played.
I usually play the diplomatic chars in our group and me trying to play a different kind of char left a hole in our group. But I had no diplomacy like skills at all. So I ended up using intimidate a lot. Then the DM started giving me negatives because I shouldn't "be able to intimidate my way through everything".

To which my response was to kill every person who wouldnt take an intimidate check. The idea was that my guy didnt like fighting that much, but if an npc didnt want to play along then we could keep killing npcs until we found one that wanted to.

Anywho, post more of the same. Try to include stories of your char instead of just random pics.

>What I made
A socially retarded wizard, one of the support staff in a prestigious magical academy and the city that is built around it. Had a penchant for organization and tidiness. Despite her inability to interact with others, she enjoyed being helpful and wanted to make people happier.

>What the DM saw
The same thing he sees whenever a wizard is in his game.

>What I actually played
Things went off-track quickly. The DM basically had her advanced in position until she was essentially running the show (despite me explaining why that was a bad idea, he wanted all the party members in positions of power), which she couldn't really deal with. She was terrible at the job because she didn't understand the human element and basically just gave arbitrary orders with no explanations, expecting them to be followed to her extremely specific dimensions and timing. End result, everyone was pissed at her, she was panicking because nobody was listening to her, and she didn't know how to deal with that.

She came to the conclusion that people would be much easier to deal with if they had no choice but to want to listen to her. That way, they would do what she wanted, which was also what was best for them.

It sort of spiralled out of control from there.

>What the DM saw.

Dr. Who. Time Wizard constantly meddling in the affairs of mortals? Must be a whovian.

>What I played.

He started out friendly, but he went very deep into Inquisitor mode very fast when he started abusing his powers for his own ends. Didn't end well for the character, and it turned out he became the BBEG for the whole campaign from the start.

A witch.jpg

What are some unconventional/entertaining characters you can pull off in pen and paper games?

I like the idea of the White Haired Witch from Pathfinder.

Normally a regular witch can get a hex called prehensile hair, that lets them grow their hair out to a length of 10 feet, and use as a limb that has a strength score equal to her intelligence, does 1d3 damage as a natural weapon and can manipulate items as finely as a hand.

An archetype you can choose for witch is based mostly around this hex, which makes it more powerful doing 1d4 of damage, and whenever the hair strikes you can attempt to grapple a foe with your hair as a free action (technically its not an action at all, and considered to be part of the main attack, but this gives the player the option to use it or not) where you use your int instead of str modified, do not provoke an attack of opportunity and do not gain the grappled condition.
Unlike a normal witch you only have 5 feet of reach at first, rather than 10, but every 4 levels the witch gains the ability to grow her hair another 5 feet until it reaches the maximum of 30 feet at level 20.

I just find the idea of a spell caster using her hair as a strong limb to wrestle people very entertaining.
16 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
If it could form multiple limbs at higher levels it would be cool.
>>
>>44012044
At higher levels you gain the ability constrict people you've grappled to do the same damage as your normal hair attack again as a swift actoin, the ability to trip people instead of grappling them with an attack, the ability to pull people closer, then at 8th level anything grappled is automatically strangled, losing the ability to speak or cast spells that require verbal components.
>>
1d4 damage is pretty garbage to rely on as your main form attack. It's an amusing idea, but it seems more like a "last resort" option than something you should be relying on as your main form of attack. Especially considering the low range required and the fact that you're one of the squishiest classes in the game with the lowest hit dice and no armor proficiencies. You REALLY don't want to be in melee range ever if you can help it.

Your name is Tam-Rek, a 45 year old veteran of the 3rd great space war. You spent the last 10 years of your life fighting in the 1138th fleet of the Uoton Army, but those days are now behind you. You have been recently chosen by the Catalog for your many years of experience to become a Stargazer, a cartographer for the unknown regions of space.

You are in your ship, a C-Grade Trading Cruiser, travelling what the Catalog has calculated to be District YC-555575. Your only mission is to gather information on any nearby planets so that it may be submitted to the Catalog for future mapmaking

Oh fuck, sorry

You look out of your ship and see nothing but black. A few stars glimmer here and there, but for the most part your eyes see nothing but the infinite spanning emptiness of space. There's not a single planet within your field of vision, but you do manage to spot some satellites if you squint hard enough. You see no purpose actually visiting any planets, your job is to locate /them not visit them after all. But you do remember that you're running low on foodstuffs and one of the satellites could be a grocery vender

It would at the very least protect you from vampires or any demons that happen to suck blood. Unless of course drinking holy water desecrates it removing it's effects.
>>
Holy waters power is from it being blessed water. If you absorb it into your body it's no longer just water and loses its power (although this could give you temporary buffs if you want to fluff it that way). I think by pfdnd it stops being holy once it leaves the fuckin bottle
>>
Drinking holy water like that would be blasphemous to a certain degree, imparting no benefit whatsoever.

Holy water is just ordinary water that's blessed, and once you stop treating it like it's holy, it loses any power it might have had.. It gets poured down the drain like all other water, and you don't see any vampire hunters ripping out Churches' plumbing in order to use the pipes as weapons.

>We must maintain the Balance Between Good And Evil, and there's currently too much Good, so we must do Evil!
Has this ever been done well, outside of a Wreck-it Ralph scenario where people are aware that their world is fictional and can't exist without someone predestined to be the villain but hate him anyway?
Keep in mind I am specifically referring to Good and Evil in a setting where such things can be measured objectively, not positive and negative energy, not a figurative "too much of a good thing" which becomes evil, not an edgy setting where there is no good side.

>>
>>44010659
No, because the idea of "I'm siding with the elves until the elves start winning then I'm siding with the orcs" is stupid.
>>
>>44010659

It works best with powerful shadowy figures manipulating things behind the scenes, lending aid to one side only for as long as it takes to restore a balance. They may work as coordinators to help unite disparate groups on one side, while sowing division and discord on the other side. Much of their work will be done through assassinations and espionage, with lots of secret agents and double agents. A motivation based on religion or mysticism works best, but you could also do it with calculating self-interested types who don't want either Good or Evil to take over and a threat to them.

Michael Moorcock's books have something similar, though it pits the Gods of Balance as trying to maintain a parity between the Gods of Law and the Gods of Chaos.

You watch as the Breton column splits away from the main force, the rows upon rows of brightly colored VTs marching off to war. In the distance, you see columns of smoke and smog billowing from the the Iron Foundry. Even from this distance, the smoke was thick enough to see, like an ominous storm cloud.

And yet the base the Tileans were attacking, Der Riese, somehow seemed far less pleasant. You were expecting to face lots of the undead, after all.

"Are you okay, Roy?" Tarin asks, looking back from her seat. "You seem rather quiet."
