Why do imperial guardsmen not have capes?

Fantasy set far enough back in history that people wrote shit down on stone tablets?

The planet Nirn and Earth are now connected by a portal in Switzerland. (CERN fucked up.) The Portal leads to an area on the border of Cyrodiil and Marrowind. Assume that it is 2 years after the Events of Skyrim and Deadra can't cross the portal.

How do things go down? How does everyone on Nirn react to Earth?

BL authors got overexcited and shat the story up, turning a simple but compelling epic into a convoluted tardfest.

In non-dice-pool-based systems, do opposed rolls actually do anything other than clutter up the game with more and more rolls?

One of my players is seemingly obsessed with opposed rolls and balks at the idea of a PC vs. NPC contest being just the PC rolling against a static NPC defense (in this system, it is normally up to the GM which way to handle it for any given ), to the point of outright threatening to leave the game because I wanted to handle a certain PC vs. NPC roll as "PC rolls against static NPC defense." The player has been in this game for 20+ sessions with me having used opposed rolls only for the first few sessions before having dropped them, then brings this up only in the latest session.

Do players have some weird illusion that opposed rolls are "more random and exciting"?

Yeah, some of them do. It's irrational and dumb, but some people think they're great. I'm with you, though, they're a big waste of time.

It sounds like you've got a guy who's going to sperg about it, though. If you want to irritate him, do a coin flip and if it's heads, add +5 to the NPC's defense.
>>
It does allow for a (very rare) chance for success/failure in cases where there is a large powergap and there otherwise would not be such a chance.

For example your PC has a +4 in stealth, while this high level guard has a +15 in perception. Were you to just use a passive perception, the PC couldn't beat the guard, since the guards passive would be 25, and even if the PC nat 20'd he would fail with a 24 nat 20 auto-succeeding skill rolls is a common misconception/house rule, but not RAW in any D&D.

However, if you both rolled, the guard could roll low, and the PC could roll high, allowing the PC a chance to succeed where they otherwise could not.

>outright threatening to leave the game because I wanted to handle a certain PC vs. NPC roll as "PC rolls against static NPC defense

You're better off without them if they're this prissy, honestly.

That said I don't think a few more rolls takes up much time. They roll, you roll, you compare. Vs, They roll, you look up the stat, you compare.

You are Urist Twelfthbay, the moe personification of Dwarf Fortress, and are a short, sturdy creature fond of drink and industry. 'Course, since you're a Gamindustri native, you just look like a little beardless girl, rather than a proud bushy-bearded dwarf.

Sure, everyone ELSE who isn't an NPC also looks like a little girl, but that doesn't make you feel much better. Just the opposite, in fact; most everyone's used to being a little girl, so you just look all the weirder for refusing to succumb to the terrible fanservice shenanigans that seem to be part and parcel of the universe.

But that's the least of your concerns. Right now, you've got a goddess living in your head. Sure, she /means/ well, and you'd normally welcome being able to tap into her mind-boggling powers for a great big 'I WIN' button, but you'd like it better if it wasn't gradually eroding your personality. As if the prospect of figurative death wasn't enough, you're also trying not to /literally/ die while stuck in the endless void between dimensions.

Alright, fine. Correction: you're trying not to literally die while stuck with all the non-existent self-preservation instincts of a dwarf who's constantly bombarded with ideas as ingenious as they are messed up.

>[X] [COMBINE YOUR EXPLOSIVE ASTEROID VEHICLE WITH THRAVAR'S FLOATING ISLAND]

... yeah, it's an uphill battle.

"Run this by me again?" Tiff drawls, scratching her head beneath her Engineer's construction helmet. She's staying off to the side as you finish building the last of the Seganium floor panels. "This Thravar girl ain't coming with us since she's dead tired of fighting AND a scaredy-cat, so..."

You straighten back up, working out the kinks in your neck. If she isn't getting off this damn island, then you'll just /tow/ her along, 'cause she'll die a horrible death if she stays out here on her own. Besides, it'll kill two birds with one stone, dragging along an ungrateful adventurer AND patching up your ride- you jerk a thumb back to the hollow asteroid, which is missing a third of its mass.

You're not sure how you /forgot/ that detonating the back end to propel you all through the void would incidentally blow it the heck up, but hey, hindsight, right?

The Team Fortress scrunches up her nose, tapping her wrench against the bridge you'd made. "And connecting the asteroid with this island with a few flimsy floor panels will keep us connected as we rocket off through space?"

((Don't worry! It's made of Seganium!)) Neptune cuts in, sounding far too excited about all this. ((If there's anything that won't collapse, it's Planeptune's national ore!))

Tiff laughs. "The voice in your head's a real die-hard devotee of Purple Heart, huh?"

... ha, ha, ha. Yeah. Yeah, she has no idea.

"Better hurry," Doomgirl growls. The hardboiled and only slightly psychopathic marine's been keeping watch over the grove of trees smack-dab in the middle of the floating island; Thravar's in there, cowering in fear, and (apparently) there's a good chance that this grove is of her own making. "She might bolt if she cottons in on this plan of yours."

Right. Wouldn't surprise you if she was "tired of fighting," but not TOO tired to run like a rabbit.

>>44030764
The three of you retreat into the hollow asteroid and its uncertain protection from space debris and/or catastrophic existence failure, and prepare to blow up /another/ bunch of firearms and explosives to propel you back toward home.

Tiff licks her lips nervously, pulling out another old-fashioned detonator- the type with an unfolding antenna. "Three, two, one-"

>They instead use the time and distraction to blow up a one-of-a-kind, irreplaceable super satellite we owned
So I'm unsure of where to take it next. I've already ramped up propaganda on the enemy race to show how they're inferior to humans, but that's too obvious. Is there any way to further smear the enemy or the party?

Date: 200 ABO, Year of the Shield

Location: Narth Ranch

You are a seven foot tall Mark I stone Golem.
You are the byproduct of the Dorfs and Gnomes attempts to make the perfect artificial being.

Yesterday, you awoke from a 200 year slumber with no since of identity or purpose. After awakening, you happened to wonder onto a small Ranch, owned by a cute young elf named Holly. After scaring the shit out of her, you asked her for a name, and she dubbed you Gabriel.
To repay her for starting you on your quest for identity, you did some work around her Ranch, and afterwards had dinner with her, and learned a bit about the world around.

The next day you met her farm hands, which went poorly at first, but using your Golem charms you manged to make friendly with the one you scared.
You also discovered a compartment in your back, where you found 10 old coins, a ruby necklace, and a letter from your creators. The Dorfs and Gnomes.
The letter says that your creators saw you as a defective unit, and threw you out. They do not care about you.

After sinking into depression, and doing some more work around the Ranch, you went to town with Holly, where you sold those old coins to a friendly Drider artist for a very nice 6000 gold.
You used some of your money to buy a breast plate to cover you massive glowing core (which will be done by the end of the week), a claymore, and a few books.

You are now back at the Ranch.

Your inventory is the fallowing

5750 gold
4 Old Coins
Very fancy silk bag (gift)
Steel clay more
Imperial History Book
Good Guide to Elves
Bad Guide to Elves (Erotic book)
