After much strife and close encounters, Makoto and his friends have finally surmounted the obsessive curse that had plagued them for their holiday. With little else in their way, they now relax on their island holiday.

In alternate gender form because, who else, Makoto wanted it.

You are Makoto Kiryoka; a teenage boy with a penchant for getting into strange situations. You bear the power of the magical girl Maiden White against the wicked souls that seek to terrorise the innocent.

> Small aside, but I have a new story up on Akun: Get Rich Quick! https://anonkun.com/stories/get-rich-quick
> It's in the same world as my previous monstergirl stories, but expanded a little and with an actual system (stripped down Storyteller). So if you're interested in that, maybe have a look. Runs irregularly, next session is possibly in two days.

"WHOOO~!" Is all that you can squeal as a huge wave carries you over the water. With a surfboard firmly under your feet, and the surprisingly natural ability to use it, you cut a clean swath through the water beneath you. Shun, Yui and Saito watch from the beach; all currently transformed into alternative gender versions of themselves (at your request). You steel your body and prepare your next move, slowly backing up the wave. You drift to the tip but maintain your balance, precariously positioning yourself in a high position.

"Surf King!" You proclaim from on high, throwing your arms up in the air. Saito grumbles, perhaps a trained surfer himself, but Shun looks just as happy as ever for you. Suddenly, you feel your feet start to wobble as a current nudges your board. You stumble, waving your arms around.

"WAUGH!" You squeak as the board starts to slip from under you. Almost as quickly as you lost control, something seems to nudge it back into position. Water sweeps over the surface, and seems to pin your feet back down. The two, watching this, expect a wipe - but you surprise them both by casually drifting back over the wave.

"Oh come ON!" Saito shouts, throwing her arms up. "He's an uncoordinated stick figure. How can he surf so well!?" She growls.

"Hey, his magical girl outfit has heels," Shun comments, shrugging, "he has to have some balance from that."

"Yes, but still..." Yui narrows his eyes and leers over the water, unable to see you past the waves.

Back in the water, you slump down onto your board.

"Whew, oh, wow I thought for sure I was going down." You sigh, wiping your wet forehead. "Nice catch, Hiroko."

A small plume of water emerges from the ocean next to you, slowly shaping itself into a small boyish face and body - a male version of your female friend, Hiroko.

"It's not," he snorts, exuding some seaweed, "ugh, easy when you stumble around so much."

"Hehe, sorry." You say, sticking your tongue out. "Ahh, I think I've annoyed Saito enough for today. We'll pick it up again tomorrow, heh~" You giggle to yourself. "Alright, let's head back."

Despite your request, Hiroko remains in place. His gaze is fixed on the shore, plastered with unease.

"Hiroko?"

"I, uh, a-are you sure we have to back right now?" He asks, slinking down further into the water. You smirk at him.

"Afraid to meet with Saito are we~?"

"...That's one of the reasons." He mumbles through bubbling water.

"Heh, just leave it to me." You say, beginning to paddle back. "I'll wave you over when it's safe."

"Um, okay?" He replies, not really understanding you. That smug grin sticks to your face all the way back to shore, where the three of them greet you.

"How was I?" You ask, squeezing some water out of your hair as you stand on relatively-dry land. Saito glares at you, with a smile.

"Unbelievable." She replies, with all honesty.

"Hehe, thanks." You say, tilting your head and smiling. "Small victories aside, there's something I want to ask of you three."

"What's that?" They ask.

In the world of Valaer, the Battle of Tirinia changed everything. That was 680 years ago.

Here lies the human Kingdom of Therindel - less a Kingdom than a confederacy of lordships, duchies, principalities, city-states, et cetera - banded together under the constant threat of attack from the mysterious Wood Elves of the eastern land of Xalfacia. For many centuries, these lords and rulers have bickered amongst each other for the right to succeed the King who fell in battle at Tirinia against the Elves.

And now the Kingdom of Therindel is a veritable hotbed of adventure, riches, and loot to be enjoyed by adventurers from all over the world. From the lost cities of the Elves, to the grand old monsters of old, to the buried treasures of those who came before. All across the region, adventurers seek fortune and glory! From the Great Frozen Patch to the Southern Plains of Vistoria, and across the ocean to foreign lands, adventurers of all shapes and sizes test their mettle here in the Kingdom of Therindel! Where heroes are made and fortune is won!

You are not one of those people.

While you enjoy the adventuring life and traveling the great distances of Therindel, things could be better. There is a town in the middle of disputed territories in Therindel, just north of Vistoria, taking a left off the main highway, west of the Great Frozen Patch, and nestled right on top of the Elder River delta (not to be confused with Delta Town of the Younger River delta). Very few know about this town, and why should they? It’s a one horse town built next to a nearly depleted Diamond mine. It is known as Ohlendorf’s Drift.

You are going there to be their first Town Adventurer in decades.

“So your name is Hartmut Harkin Halbschwert, yes?” You sat across the Mayor’s desk, nodding to every question he asks. You rubbed your gloves together, careful to remain stiff and orderly. First impressions are the only impressions after all. The mayor herself glances at you occasionally, looking at your accomplishments that you put down to ink on paper. Admittedly it wasn’t exactly well-prepared. In fact, you only came up with the idea of such a thing last night. And you had to spend quite a few coins asking someone to write it and dictate it for you. Reading is not exactly your strong suit after all. “You are from Solarno, across the sea.” She brushes her white hair back, grimacing a bit looking upon your list. “And… what is this?” She turns the paper over, showing off your crude drawing of you wielding your sword.

You smile, trying not to show your teeth. “Er, that is my demonstration of how I present myself in combat. You see, any thieves and right buggers that want to-“

She cuts you off, quirking her brow. “Why are you holding the sword by the blade?”

Ugh, this conversation again. “It’s an art, that my father taught me, and his father, and his father,” you explain for the hundredth time or so. “What it does-“ Wait for it. She’s going to ask it, isn’t she?

“You’ll cut your hands, won’t you?” she asks, as if talking to a baby.

You hold up your hands, showing off the specialized padded gauntlets that you wear. “I wear gloves, madam Mayor. And I have never in my life in the way that I wield my sword have cut my hands.”

You sigh. Maybe you shouldn’t have drawn that. It’s usually a dealbreaker towards people who want to hire you at all. That and your short stature and your inability to read. She leans back in her seat, nodding, not even giving you some sort of smile or frown or anything. “Listen, Mister Halbschwert. Ohlendorf’s Drift is a very poor town, and despite that, we have no problems with crime or with monsters or… well anything. The last criminal who attempted to steal a bag of gold pieces winded up getting tar and feathered by the mining community who make up the vast majority of residents here. And the miners while… eccentric, perhaps, are very reliable peacekeepers in their own right. Introducing an Adventurer will do nothing but present a new financial…”

She’s speaking very big words.

And involuntarily, you might have spaced out. This was a nice room after all, if barebones. You guess a poor town like Ohlendorf’s Drift might not have much in the way of luxury.

“And let’s see here.” You blink. “Even if we did want to hire an Adventurer, your records are not exactly impressive.” Really? You thought exterminating a nest of wild hogs was pretty impressive. Hogs are very slippery. And they eat everything, everything! “For example…”

> “Your honesty in stating that you ASSISTED in the slaying of an Elder Dragon is admirable, but it dilutes your accomplishment considering it says here you had the help of fifty other Adventurers.”
> “The extermination of an Ogre is impressive, the fact that Ogre was your size is not.”
> “Your actions at the Siege of the Goblin Hold of Terresko are admirable at first glance, but participation in the reinforcing wave after the initial Goblin line fell is not exactly flattering.”

>who cares if the fighter isn't good for much else, fighters are for killing things!

Is this what D&D players believe high-level fighters should be like nowadays?

Most of the utility is in background and proficiencies, the non-ritual utility spells are mostly shit, and ritual casting is literally one feat away from every class.
>>
>>44022554
Fighters get just as many skills as anyone else save Bards and Rogues, and all of the subclasses offer a degree of Out-of-Combat utility.

The Fighter isn't only great at damage either. They're great at combat maneuvers thanks to their large number of attacks.

In addition, they get more Feats than any other class, which offer a lot more utility and power than previous editions. Picking up great utility feats or spellcasting is easier than ever.
>>
>>44022631
Not really. Non-ritual utility spells are serious business. You have Legend Lore, Suggestion, Scrying, Teleport, and Plane Shift all in there.

I'm running a 5e D&D game, and it I've been running it since January. My players are having fun, I'm having fun... But they haven't gone through a single dungeon yet. Was the game built with dungeon exploration as the main focus? Could my games be any better with an actual dungeon or two to explore?

I'm just running it as a large-scale urban exploration/thieves campaign.

I know if everyone is having fun, that's the whole point. I realize that, I'm asking if my game can be even funner.

You don't need to throw in dungeons just for the sake of having them.

A good way to test the waters for if dungeons would improve things, is to have them hired to steal something from a noble's manor, and have their mansion and security system function as a "dungeon" with traps and monsters (fluffed as hired security).

If that ends up being more fun, include more dungeons and shit, and if it ends up being less fun, just keep running around in their normal urban game.
>>
>>44022899
That sounds like pretty solid advice. I haven't had this much fun since playing a table top RPG since 2e Dark Sun game back in '92
>>
>>44022548
>>44022899
"Dungeon" doesn't necessarily mean a literal dungeon. Any specific location with a set of traps, encounters, puzzles etc is a dungeon.

Just like how a villain doesn't necessarily have to be a literal dragon.

Also, OP, if you're having fun you're doing it right, regardless of what preconceived notions or even rules say. However, have you considered alternatives to D&D? Some are built more specifically for things like stealth and social encounters, while others are more narrativist and rules-light and thus more flexible, if you worry you're not using D&D "right". But, again, if you're having fun you're doing it right.

"I said teach me, didn't I Rena? Don't worry about the semantics regarding Dark or Light or anything like that, it'll be a backup tool, right? No reason to worry about it." You say with a grin, giving the girl a pat on the shoulder than seems to relieve her quite a bit.

"Right!" She replies, sounding rather cheery. "So... I guess the best way to describe this sort of thing would be..." Rena trails off, evidently actually having to think about this rather than just knowing how to explain it. "You're unique Zev, you have fun in fights, your control of the Force is impressive, so for a technique like this you're already halfway there. To use the Dark side, at least, how Papa told me, you need to focus on your emotions, rather than keeping them bottled up like Jedi do."

She taps her cheek a few times, still evidently thinking about how to phrase this. "He said that most Sith use their anger, or hatred of something to drive them to use the dark side, but it's not restricted to just those sorts of things. Lots of Sith have been fueled by something else, desire for power being the most common one, you just... have to find what works best for you I suppose." Finishing with her own little shrug.

"And for the technique itself?" You ask.

"Oh that's simple! You just need to channel your emotion and The Force towards your fingertips, will it to take form, it might take a few tries, but you should be able to do it no problem! Just find an emotion to focus on and try it."

>CONT
>>
>>44022048
What emotion to focus on though, the Dark Side normally feeds off of your more aggressive emotions from what Renari said, so it'd probably be easier to do that than to try to force something else to work... but is that really you? You really don't get that angry, you just have your determination to do better, the enjoyment you get out of life, and the less 'pure' emotion of lust... that last one probably wouldn't work though, not well at least. So instead you decide to try focusing on the enjoyment you feel, how much better your life has gotten since you arrived at the Academy. Renari and Master Tikran, you enjoy spending time with them, you enjoy learning, getting the chance to finally have an education. The delicious food, the warm bed, the chance to better yourself beyond being just a street rat, all of these memories and ideals come rushing forward as you concentrate your power to the tips of your fingers.

It hasn't worked.

"Hey. Azure?" Dave asks, his eyes locking onto your screen. "I have something to ask.."
"How many questions?" You ask, obviously.
"Just one." He says. "If you could do anything, what would it be? I mean, what is it you want out of existence?"
"That was two." You grumble to him.

You've always been more interested in the mortal realm and whenever you gazed into it and saw someone do a good deed, it filled you with warmth. It was a feeling you couldn't have no matter how many you killed, tortured or brought to ruin. Eventually you stopped feeling that warmth whenever you gazed into the mortal world. So you decided that if you were ever going to feel that same feeling once more, you'd have to leave the Demonic Plane you were bound to and venture into the Mortal Realm. You are a Hellspawn of Anger; a low-ranking servant to a powerful Demon Lord that rules a Demonic Plane of his own. You feed subconsciously on the human emotion known as "anger". The warm feeling inside of you doesn't sustain you, it only makes you feel better for short amounts of time.

A gust of cold winter's night air softly caress you as it pass through the forest you find yourself in. The wind gently moves your black cloak, whipping it to the rhythm of its passing, all the while it strikes at your features. You no longer possess the body you had in the Demonic plane, yet no man, living or dead, may claim you to be human. In the midst of the night, you stand as a towering mass of darkness, the only source of light coming from one of the two eyes that you can see with. A sudden shriek pulls at the strings of your attention. Only a few meters away there stands a small figure, bearing clothes not yet fit for the cold, red cheeks and tear-filled eyes. It's a human, and from your years of gazing into the mortal realm, you gather that it's a female too. A very young one at that. Her sudden shriek has turned to silence as she stares at you, dumb-founded as to what to do next.

"M-meth fo eno uoy era?" She carefully whispers to you. The wind almost swallows her words from you, but your ears catch them. You're about to answer her, when you're reminded that you do not yet speak their tongue. For all your centuries of watching them, you've never heard them speak nor read their words written in ink. This curious little child who's freezing and has been crying for a long time is now staring up at you, her gaze meeting that of your one functioning eye that serves as the only source of light among the mass of darkness that you've become. In the distance, beyond the edge of the forest, you spot lights flickering in the wind. A village on fire, yet you hear no screams nor the sound of steel clashing with steel. You feel no anger from this child. Does she know what she's running from?

>Shake your head at her.
>Nod at her.
>Ignore her and walk towards the burning village.

>shake your head
I'm guessing she's asking if we're going to kill her or something.

Can we change shape? Assume human form?

Do we have any mind-rape powers that will let us learn the language quickly, or will we have to do it the slow way?

in general, I find someone who's willing to consciously make a mistake in the name of their character's knowledge or personality

Someone who prioritizes making a positive contribution to the immersion of the other players.

Nobody needs another sperglord who thinks he's a great role-player because he knows the sickest build in D&D, focus on making the fiction feel alive for the rest of the group.

Someone willing to buy into the story the GM is telling, and help tell it.
