I've actually been in a game for several months, but if I were to run one it would be Sinbad-meets-Elric in the Dreaming Sea.

A lot of people always say that D&D is shit and that there are much better alternatives out there.

And after playing it a couple of times it's really hard to disagree that it's a shit system.

But what are those much better alternatives for generic heroic fantasy? And I don't really give a shit about class balance or caster supremacy, I want a system that don't feel like a video game or a minis game that pretends to be RPG.

Reign, Warhammer fantasy, riddle of Steel, burning wheel, mouse guard.
>>
Savage Worlds is good if you want game to feel less ruley/gamey and more narrative. It's also extremely simple system that's easy to learn.

GURPS would be good choice if you want something less heroic and more "realistic" because it's simulation type of a system.

Welcome one, and I welcome you all to the tale of a world called Thespia.

Here is the odyssey of one that clings to this world with no face of their own! In a place where magic is fundamental to all of creation, from the ancient origins of Leviathan seas and behemoth lands, zephyr winds, and phoenix fires. All things in this world has a life and voice. Yet they are only heard by those that listen.

The Faceless, a being of eldritch origins, arose from the bottom of a well. Many a folk tale in Thespia says that only two things reside at the bottoms of wells, "Evil and wishes."
Since returning to the surface land wearing the face of another, The Faceless has encountered many friends and foes in their journeys as they switch faces and live the lives of others.
The question that persists? Which face is his own? And where will his adventures lead as he twists the fate of this cursed world.

Traveling now as the Eternal Dancer, Belinda the Beautiful, the Faceless's party makes its way to Celes Prance, a Namour city built upon a lake.

The wash of waves slam against the supports of the pier in the distance, the hustle and bustle of the city of Cleptess carries on. Sailor and merchant's wives go down to market to purchase fresh fish and vegetables for an evening dinner when their husbands return home. Pickpockets and Cutpurses roam between the stalls with hoods to hide their sinister Drezhar features. Their finds likely going down to the city beneath the city, Septic, where strange and unusual things are like to occur.

Sol shines down, giving everyone a brilliant day, yet a scummy overcast sheds the city in an almost befouled light as corruption and greed run all the way down to the Cleptess's roots.

As your party wandered the streets upon the back of the Dire Wolf, a man looking for your noble entourage took notice and followed after as you made your way into a tavern. The waxed sign would still bear the crust of old salt locked deep within the wood, but the text would remain clear, “The Merry Sailor's Widow.”

With a smile, you took a lone man striding for the tavern aside. A regular drunk with no doubt out to start his drinking a touch early in the day. Slipping a few topaz gems and a word that they truly must be old friends, the aspiring drunk slapped this stranger upon the back and hung an arm over his shoulder as they strode inside.

Taking up a table separated by only one other from the targets he would spy on, he relaxed into his seat and called for a round for old friends. Now and then, he'd peer his green eyes over at the Redheaded Namour, White-haired Makoh, and Bookish Stella “lad” with glasses that only one of high esteem could afford in such good condition.
>>
>>46843810

With her posture tensing he guesses well that the Makoh must have noticed him. Those zealous fighters are typically keen about their surroundings after all.. A short time later as he's joking with his “Friend,” the redhead meets his eyes with illustrious silver ones of her own. His heart stops for a moment as his eyes widen in a moment of surprise. Those eyes...

You stiffen as you make eye contact with the man from afar. Though he wears a cowl and carries himself happily despite the less than luxurious setting, the diamonds in his green eyes are unmistakable as a Hylon. Yet, what would a Hylon be doing here? And why would they follow? Your eyes shift to Victoria as she tries to drink her beverage, face going red and lips trembling from the foul taste.

Reaching out, you touch the mug and lower it from her lips with a caring grin, “Woah there, you don't need to be so eager. We can order you squeezed juice instead.”

Victoria's cheeks go red.

Odette chuckles stiffly, the stranger's presence still perturbing her, “She insisted on having what we're having.”

“I don't understand why anyone drinks this foul beverage. I'd associate the words rancid from that experience. Is this what fermented tends to mean? They truly allow this to stew in barrels for months on end? Have they no clue how awful this is? Here I was upset that father never allowed me wine at the table...” Victoria carries on rambling while you look into Odette's eyes.

“Lead him to an isolated area?” She asks.

“We could confront him. He saw me look at him though.”

“Could incite a barfight and slip away in the chaos.”

“Fun, though we could also approach him directly... Or I could ask him to dance?” You smile innocently, showing your bright teeth.

===============

You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

The day is off to a good start. You're sitting on your balcony along with Olwen and Reagan, who's still in the capital. From your vantage point, you can see the bustling markets and docks that signify Aurwain's prosperity. Everything is quiet at the palace, and you've received word that your sister's assignment has been successfully completed, and that she'll be back home in a few days.

So you're not at all surprised when Myrddin storms in, panting for breath.

"Your highness," he says, "we have a problem."

"And thus the cosmos is returned to its proper order," Olwen says. "What is it this time?"

"Some merchants and destitute nobles want to meet the king to discuss ownership rights," Myrddin says. "And by 'some,' I mean over a hundred. I'm afraid things will get complicated if they're not placated."

"That does sound like a problem," you say. "So why am I only hearing about it now?"

Myrddin coughs and very deliberately avoids your gaze. "From what I can tell, they planned the specifics during regular meetings and negotiations," he says. "My agents didn't notice anything since most of it was business as usual. I came as soon as I learned about it and figured out who was involved."

"Is it really such a problem?" Reagan asks.

"Legally, only the nobles are allowed to own land and resources, and to control the production quotas of the various guilds," you explain. "In practice, there's more flexibility. Some nobles prefer a hands-off approach, while others like to become heavily involved. It's not usually a problem, but it can affect regional economies, and there's always a certain element of uncertainty involved since the nobles can seize and redistribute assets whenever they want."

"This time, it looks like the Coleran merchants have allied themselves with House Haearnty," Myrddin says. "Haearnty lost its lands, its wealth, and its seal of nobility several years ago when Prince Aled swindled them into bankruptcy to acquire some of their farmland which was suitable for growing alchemical reagents."

In other words, they're unlikely to have a positive impression of the royal family. A noble house can still recover after losing its land and its wealth, but the loss of a seal of nobility is catastrophic. Without its seal, mercantile enterprises are the only way for House Haearnty to make some kind of recovery, but even then, they'll always be dependent on another noble house.

The scent of blood and snowfall always takes you back there, to the child you once were and never would be again.

You’ve never been sure how long you’ve been out there, trying to scrape a living from the back alleys and the gutter of the capital. Time is a concept that only makes itself present with the coming of night and the changing of the seasons. You’ve lost count of how many times you’ve had to hide to avoid the nastier gangs, but you can still remember five different instances of stealing rags from clotheslines to avoid freezing to death.

Not that they’re helping you now. High above the city ramparts and beyond despondent banners of faded gold, snow falls unceasingly from the grey sky. Already, a good three inches coat the streets and buildings without showing any sign of stopping, and you’ve been unable to feel your fingertips for the last hour.

In a quiet alleyway along the main road, you lie against a stone wall. Cursing and wincing, you gently peel back the wool clothes clinging to your body. They come away sticky and red with the metallic scent of blood overriding that of the ambient winter. Along the side of your abdominal, trails of crimson liquid seep out of a small cut at least three inches across.

Dammit. It was yours. You could’ve sworn you dodged that blade.

With hands trembling from the cold, you slide your arm out from your sleeve and hold the cloth to your mouth. Your teeth make quick work of the thing, tearing through the seams and fabric to create a crude set of bandages. A technique that’s patched your sorry self more times than you’d like to admit.

You do your best not to scream, clenching your teeth as you wrap the cloth around your midsection. It hurts, but it could have been worse. Much worse. At least you made it out of that scrap alive. The Red Snake bastard that knifed you can’t say the same.

Not the cleanest kill you’ve had to make. Especially with a…

It is the year 579 on New Earth, the sixth century of civilization’s struggle in this unforgiving mix of wasteland and wilderness nears its end. That is not to say that the many threats of New Earth are subsiding. In fact, these threats are growing. The Order, a failing world government that has become a slave to its own bureaucracy, has instituted the Hunter Program: A government managed group of specialist soldiers to counter threats considered too dangerous for the ill equipt First Army.

Hunters are divided among Guilds, with each guild utilizing its own methodology for countering various threats, with some specializing in stopping specific threats. All guilds function under the Hunters’ Guild Majoris, a mixing pot of office workers and hunters who lack any specific skills or interests. Some guilds receive major criticism for the public for destruction of both public and private property while in combat, and others are criticised for their complete disregard for their jobs, acting closer to exclusive clubs with the rights to disregard certain laws. In its disarray, The Order fails to keep the Hunters under control, and they are often left to their own devices and missions given by the Hunters’ Guild Majoris.

The world has entered a new technological revolution, a true digital age as it is, culminating in the advancement of artificial intelligence and the creation of the ‘Null-Core’, a device able to warp space itself and manifest digital entities as physical one. The combination of these two devices has allowed for both the physical manifestation of AI, fully sentient with neon skins. Utilizing null-cores to their fullest extent, AI often act as powerful mages, shaping the world and assisting in creating cities fueled by null-cores. Additionally, AI feature a wide range of personalities, almost perfectly mimicking humans sentient organic species, adverse to the now obsolete androids.

>>
Prior to AI use, a working class composed almost entirely of androids was in effect. Cold and calculating, androids fail to produce a wide range of emotions. While they may feature some level of personality, androids are highly task based, and will almost always take the shortest and most logical route to success. Androids rarely develop relationships, and a good number of them have been discontinued. Those in effect are often highly modified, and either used as personal bodyguards or recruited as hunters.

Humans no longer stand alone as a single organic race on New Earth as well. The most prominent of emerging races are the Pranni and Agmeo, two races created through genetic experimentation prior to mankind’s return to Earth. The pranni are small, childlike humanoids, with skin tones ranging between light shades of blue and purple. They feature pointed ears that are almost diamond in shape. They age slowly and retain a childlike size throughout their entire life. Pranni are notorious for their keen intellect and regal bearings, often taking leadership roles in The Order and other local governments.

Agmeo, on the other hands, are largely viewed as brutes. Massive humanoids towering over other races by nearly two feet, they are the subject of prejudice. Also created through genetic experimentation, the Agmeo were an attempt at creating a superior being, however extensive testing showed that their temper matched their strength, and they were given a number of military roles when mankind returned to earth. Today, Agmeo make up a majority of the lower class, with many forced into the First Army as military comes close to tradition for Agmeo communities.
>>
The bureaucracy of The Order is its greatest weakness. A government so built around the approval process that little is done to forward the world. Within it, however, sits a sort of capitalist technocracy run by corporations who produce the various goods and weapons of this futuristic world. The leading company is UpLink, the inventors of the null-core. This company holds nearly total control of the technoscape, the world brought about by the use of null-cores.

This leaves us to ask about you and your decision to become a hunter. Before we begin, please answer the following questions about you and what sort of hunter you will be:

What is your gender?

What race are you?

Your son is going to be okay, and this thought fills you with immense relief. Then you recall that someone hurt your son, and your hands start to shake. The anger builds as you push yourself to your feet and you're filled with a manic sort of energy. This world is going to burn, and you're going to be the one that sets it alight. The spirit, its disciples, its minions, its servants; you'll see every last one of them turned to ash and forgotten before you forgive the harm they've caused.

Casting about the swamp you find yourself in, you focus in on the enormous living temple resting across the marsh. It stretches skyward, vanishing into the colorful mist which hangs heavy in the air of this place. If the spirit has a place of power, this is it. With Zahak following closely behind you stride towards the yawning archway, fire dancing at your fingertips and the pools of stagnant water parting to allow your passage.

As you ascend the stairs you can finally see something of the interior. The walls on either side have been shaped from coral into mesmerizing, multicolored patterns. They seem to pulse and writhe as you enter, coming alive with motion. Perhaps they recognize your presence as foreign, or perhaps they're merely responding to some new stimuli. The sight of the walls around you reaching towards you, spreading their twitching tendrils in excitement, is a disturbing one nonetheless.

Zahak is startled, and a jet of flame washes over the wall on your right. The thick slime which coats the walls seems to insulate the coral from the heat of the flame, but a strange shiver runs through the entire structure. As you continue further towards what you think is a throne room, the coral on your right begins to untwist itself. An enormous figure is disgorged, clad in thick carapace armor and wielding a stained copper sword nearly as long as you are tall. He stumbles from the wall to block your path, sword crunching into the floor as he lets it fall.

(1/2)
>>
The blade of your saber hums softly in the silence that follows. Behind you, you can hear the soft clatter of chitin against the coral floor, and Zahak's thoughts inform you that the spirit's minions have blocked off the exit. Perhaps if you were a lesser man you would be afraid. Perhaps if this spirit had not harmed your son, you would be tempted to retreat. Instead you can feel your face split into a manic grin, hidden behind the featureless mask of your helm. This will be fun.

As a DM I honestly redid proficiencies for classes and put warlock in the same tier as rogues, so they have full prof in Simple and Finesse weapons by virtue of class. I might give them back longsword.

Things have settled now that you are returned home to your beloved fortress. Your advisors are hard at work, either reinforcing you military or stabilizing your economy. The newly instated police in the former Hielonite territories are doing well to keep things in order while your main forces are away, and though there are still occasional upsets, nothing substantial can begin with them on the watch.

Legion is back to his normal routine of training, and gathering souls from the land's condemned. Duncan is weaving your spy network, always diligent. Marigold leads your Hellraisers in even more intense and demanding training, turning them into a tight and deadly machine. Gilbert and Caitlyn are researching more methods to increase your meager but notable magical presence in the world. And Sophia spends her days undergoing physical therapy and managing her new diet, all while contemplating the babe growing in her belly.

Vanessa is still far and away, serving demon lords in the fourth ring, while her mother tries to find a way to free her. But in the meantime, you are searching for the location of three ancient artifacts that Caitlyn believes can grant immense power.

As you rise from slumber once more, you must decide which avenue to focus on.

And see if we can get her to take the artifact she took previously on her way out.
Me thinks we could plan a heist....

So the new Delta Green Agent's Handbook came out this week, have any of you had a chance to take a look? What do you think?
Also general Delta Green discussion, I'm looking to run a game in a few months and would like to hear tips.

Haven't had a chance to look yet.
I ran the last edition of DG at a local gaming con, people seemed to have fun but we didn't get to finish the scenario. I more blame that on the length and style of the scenario - Convergence - and con time limits than any problem with delta green as a game, though.

can someone explain ghouls in DG for me?
>>
>>46831404

They're humans.

Prolonged cannibalism induces a massive change in the body, making them incredibly strong, nocturnal corpse-eaters.

They mostly live peacefully, beneath major cities. They're isolationist - they don't want contact with the "unripened fruits". Some wield ghoulish magic, and some outcasts live on the surface and prey on humans directly.

Ghoul magic is things like "eat a brain to gain all its knowledge" or "eat flesh to take their shape".

New Orleans has or had a powerful clan of ghouls ruling a crime syndicate. They had a killsquad of zombies in tactical gear, and various nasty magics.

So hit it with a steel hammer? You do know titaniums weaker than steel right?
