I don't know if you're using "cancer" disparagingly or if you actually suggesting that silica gel is a carcinogen.

It is not carcinogenic. It's just silica rust.

So, I came back to my hometown for the 4th of July weekend, and caught up with some old friends, including my former tabletop group.

Last night, we got to reminiscing about old campaigns, and I was mentioning to my then-GM how some of the tips he gave me have really helped my own GMing. But then the conversation turned to a particular game we played, with a homebrew system, and I remembered a lot of the early part seemed to be randomly running around fighting monsters of the session and coming back for cash, which he always said (and I tend to agree) is a bad model, which prompted the inevitable question as to why he did it then, and his answer, with a shrug, was

>Well, we were trying Rick's system, remember? I had originally planned it to be just a short meaningless thing, get some system mastery all around, and then we'd move on to a real campaign. But you guys got attached to your characters, so I sewed it into the ideas I was tinkering with at the time.

I mean, it makes sense. Something I'd do if I was GMtesting someone's new system. But I can't help but feel annoyed and betrayed over it, even if overall it was one of the better campaigns I played in, certainly one of the most I've felt vulnerable in.

You were in a campaign that you had fun with and admit is one of the better ones you've played in, and that makes you... angry? Because the GM adjusted his campaign plans since you guys liked your characters?
>>
Take a deep breath, Anon.
This isn't worth getting angry over. You all had a fun campaign from the sounds of it and finding out that it began from a series of one-shot should not diminish that enjoyment. You sound like you and your former GM are in agreement and the situation arose naturally. Being mad at your younger selves is not something that should affect your current selves negatively.

Also, this is why they tell you not to look behind the curtain.

Hey /tg/, I was looking around for systems for running a Legend of Zelda campaign and I couldn't quite settle on anything.

The /tg/ homebrew doesn't seem finished, and I'm not really looking for a D&D/Pathfinder system, so I was hoping someone could suggest something I could work with.

I would like something that could support different races at the very least.

What does a Legend of Zelda game entail in your opinion?

Because discovering a map tile by tile and solving puzzles and fetch quests, all while avoiding enemies or devoting all attention to beating them in combat... It doesn't translate well to tabletop gaming.

So you're going to have to pick what makes it Zelda: the kawaii factor?, the fast character progression?, the well concealed railroad?, the SNES charm? What sets it apart from Adventure Time?

Then you come back here and ask for a system that delivers that.
>>
>>48110823
Well, I'm not looking for something that exactly fits the game. What I want to do is tell a story based in the Legend of Zelda universe for some friends. It's why I'm looking for some systems I could tweak and poke at to start with.

Noteworthy points:
>Drastically reined-in magic system putting casters on equal footing with non-casters
>Classes and the game as a whole designed to ensure everyone can contribute in a wide range of circumstances, even outside their primary niche
>Separate cash and Reputation economies keep mundane gear relevant and magic items special
>Custom monster and NPC design is a breeze
>Optional Campaign Qualities tweak mechanics to suit your preferred style and tone

Would Lancer or Assassin make a better base class leading up to Gallant?
>>

Depends on the character. What are you envisioning?
>>
>>48110721
I'm aiming to make a character for an intrigue campaign dealing with a succession crisis, who can handle themselves both in combat and social scenarios effectively, acting as a champion/agent for whatever faction they choose to align with. I'm aware both Lancer and Assassin are decent at this, though I'm not sure how effective some of Lancer's abilities would be outside of a battlefield/formal duel where they're able to don full armor/arms astride a horse.

Happy Fap of July, /tg/.

Here's my dilemma:
>Wanna design a city-state in a fantasy setting
>Can't decide if it should be on the water like Venice or way up in the mountains like Macchu Pichu

Now how do I put a large body of water way up in the mountains and why would anybody build a city-state there?

Howdy. I'm looking into running a game using Glorantha as a setting, but it appears as though it's now jointly supported by both RuneQuest and HeroQuest as systems.

Can anyone who has experience with both or either let me know which one they'd recommend using, or give me a rundown of the broader differences?

>"Sandbox" campaigns.
It always translates to one of two things:
A.) The GM is too lazy to actually come up with even the barest thread of plot direction or story arc
B.) The players all decide to do different things and the sandbox becomes a WTF mess of random bullshit that's worse than Skyrim with mods.

In this thread post the pros and cons of your current GM or GMs, or critique your own GM style. If that is not applicable, post the pros and cons to certain players in your group. Also, please post the games played and if the GM is strictly an online presence, or if this is at a real table.

Real Life GM (Normally running versions of D&D, GURPS, or Pathfinder)-

PROS:
He's a professional fantasy/science fiction writer
Always comps free soda and food with no questions asked
Level headed and narrative minded
Can houserule and homebrew game elements in a balanced, professional way
Has run ten player games in the past like they were nothing

CONS:
When he says "2:00" he means "3:30 and time to pick up pizza"
Almost always runs a GM character
The official rules don't mean shit to him, you end up having to memorize his notes and changes like a patch log
Does not like beer at the table

Errata:
His games have the distinct feeling of a higher fantasy "Game of Thrones"
He has no problem involving younger players at all, so sometimes we are running games with younger end teenagers at the table

PROS:
Super enthusiastic in his work
Hosts every time, without fail (also comping sodas and snacks)
Wants to make sure everybody's character feels valid, without nerfing anybody else to match them
Has awesome sound setup

CONS:
SUPER reluctant to run anything not DnD
Will NOT take criticism
Likes to include super powered DMPC's (except this time, I fucked the current one from an all powerful arch mage, capable of slaying armies, to a housewife who dotes over our child)
Doesn't understand fighting stances, techniques or general battle strategies or anything more complex than 'I swing'
If he doesn't want you to kill a character at a point he deals inconvenient to his plot, that character will fucking turbocharge his powerlevels to survive. Not kill us mind you, just survive.

I value clarity and inclusiveness, and BBEG is a perfect example of bad jargon.

Why don't you value clarity and inclusiveness? It's a problem I noticed that continually pops up, and it's only because a few people are attached to a purposely-dumb-sounding and largely outdated acronym that is absolutely unnecessary, and whatever wellspring of humor it was tapping from has long since dried up.

It's just bad jargon at this point, and there's no need to perpetuate bad jargon like it's your favorite pet term.

You don't think it's a problem because you've settled on a personal definition, and don't really care if people understand you or you understand them.

You don't really care about people new to the hobby, or people who seek clear discourse, because you are more concerned with propagating your pet term at the cost of relying that people know what you mean when it seems like you don't even know what you mean.

Bad jargon is a problem. Perhaps not the biggest problem, but it's one so easily fixed that it's silly to perpetuate it.
