I've had the best luck with FFG's Star Wars systems. If your campaign is going to be more adventurous, go with Edge of the Empire. If more military, go with Age of Rebellion. If more mystical and focused on the Force, go with Fate and Destiny.

I might try some existential horror where they are literally the only people in the world. Everything looks normal, but there is no other person besides the players.

Creepy things lurking around every corner... did aliens destroy humans? Are they in hell? Perhaps this is some nightmarish coma? Or maybe this is the life we all live anyway. A lonely ass fucking existence with maybe a few people we blindly have to trust or it's nothing at all as we wander around trying to make sense of shit.

Yeah it's really hard to do horror when you're a nihilist.

You could try making the world like some kind of pale shadow of the real thing, like everything has been drained from it. It's populated by near invisible monsters of fog or something. There could be implications that everyone was shaped into something else, something Other, but there aren't nearly enough of them for that. Maybe one person doesn't equal one monster?

Otherwise the place is simply empty, with the occasional attack by some shade of the world that was.

Make your first bloodline Elemental so can automatically change all damage spells to a second element.
Make your second bloodline Draconic, in a color that matches your elemental bloodline, giving you a boost to all your element-converted spells.

Blaster mages are pretty weak compared to support/debuff magic builds, unless you're spending alot of time fighting large groups of enemies. That being said, they're not awful, and there are a few ways to about this.

Sorcerers: Do what the previous poster said and mix elemental and draconic bloodlines. It's not a huge boost, but it's also not a huge penalty to take the Archetype (-2 will saves) unless you're facing alot of charm/illusion enemies.

The other option for Sorcerers is to simply take the Arcane Bloodline and spam meta-magic feats. The ones to look out for are:
>Maximize Spell: Max damage
>Empower Spell: Adds more hit dice to spells
>Quicken Spell: Cast a swift
>Dazing Spell: With area spells like fireball, this makes everything that fails it's save lose turns, making your damage incredibly supporty.


You other options are to pick a Wizard or an Arcanist, as wizards get a Specialization School and Arcanists have an Archetype and an Exploit to get a Specialization School.

It may sound contradictory, but Evocation is actually NOT what you want to specialize in here. Actually the best schools are as follows:

Conjuration (Teleportation): You get a free teleport that you can use as a swift action. With Dimensional Agility Feat, you can essentially do this with no downside. This gives you, as a swift action, a way to disengage from melee combat and grapples without provoking an attack of opportunity, and pretty much skip concentration checks. It also gives you a way to get on roofs and other highground without having to use flight.

Divination (Foresight): All the prepared rerolls, all the saves passed.

Elemental (Void): Reveal Weakness absolutely shreds your opponent's ability to make saves. Although this requires allies who can take advantage of this.

Beyond this, load up on Metamagic feats, same as sorcerer.

If all you want is truly damage, crossblooded sorcerer with the orc and draconic bloodlines and the bloodline mutation for blood havoc. That gives you 2 bonus damage per dice on every spell with one extra damage per dice when dealing damage of a chosen element. Then you take varisian tattoo and bloatmage initiate to pump your caster level, and use intensify spell whenever possible because you'll have some dead levels where you have spell slots but no spells known to use in them.

This isn't a great build, but it does a lot of damage.

What does /tg/ think to the official song of ice and fire RPG? Aside from the source material that is.

Despite the having all the problems of a license product i'm actually a big fan of the mechanics myself.

It has interesting ways of doing character house creation, ability stats, as well as social combat and mass combat.

I always liked the idea of a D6 dice pool system which doesn't need a buckets worth of them.

What makes for a bad fantasy novel?

Now that's a pretty open ended question, with so many sub genres it's difficult to say if any one genre is better or worse than another so let's narrow that down: What makes a bad fantasy novel, in it's primary sub genre?

I'm wondering this because I personally am not a fan of G.R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series, I think he doesn't understand the logistics of medieval politics and military, he thinks 7 kingdoms would be large enough to occupy a 3000 mile long continent, and he spends a lot of time writing about nothing in particular, with few meaningful events happening (especially lately, lately being subjective with a ten year gap for some books).

The problem though is, as much as I love Tolkien, the same complaints can be leveled at his own books. But I think Tolkien was an amazing writer and I don't think that's because of nostalgia or rose tinted glasses, he accomplished what he set out to do with his books. So then what's the difference?

I think it comes down to this: Martin is trying to write a series about political intrigue and war, and yet he doesn't actually know how the logistics of a war would actually work, or how medieval politics worked, he knows enough to write a story sure but not enough to write a fantastic series. On the other hand Tolkien wanted to write a mythology, he wanted a new contemporary mythology for the British, because even their Arthurian legends were ultimately french in origin, and in working towards that goal he accomplished it, creating a setting that feels mythological. So really, what makes a bad fantasy novel, is one that fails to competently write about it's subject matter, and by the same sentiment, a great novel doesn't need to be completely competent about the subjects it's not focusing on?

tl;dr: If both Tolkien and Martin were shit at making maps and kingdoms, why do we give one a pass and the other not

Tolkien actually wanted to write about his experiences in the war, WWI and possibly throwing some intrigue in about WWII. Ultimately, he wanted to write a book about war and the human condition in war, about hardship, horror, courage, and friendship in the darkest of times, much of it based on his experiences at the Battle of the Somme.

The thing is, he didn't want to be just one among many war memoir writers of the time, so he used the language and narratives of fantasy and mythology to cloak his war story. That's where we get the Hobbit, and later the LotR from, and potentially why they're so enduring; there's an undercurrent of real-life experience coloring these fantastical events.

I can't speak about Martin because I don't know what his process is behind writing his books. I do dislike him for not knowing what the fuck he was talking about when he shit-talked Tolkien's works, but that's ultimately beside the point of what motivated him to write his narrative.

Martin shit-talked Tolkien because Tolkien didn't portray war as "realistic." You know, without the shock and horror (and rape) and stuff. This guy says someone who fought in THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME in THE GREAT WAR doesn't know what he's talking about when he writes about war.

Point is, fuck Martin in my opinion.

Story that serves as an excuse to give opportunities for world exposition, instead of a world that serves as an excuse to progress the story. World should service story. Story should not service world.

If it doesn't need to be a novel, let it be a short story or a novella. Don't turn 50-100 pages of quality storytelling into a 500 page novel by adding 400 pages without adding any substance. A novella is a good thing. A collection of short stories all set in a unified world is a good thing. Filler is filler.

I am a fan of neither Tolkien nor Martin, however both wrote excellently overdescriptive text-books on how to turn their visions into satisfying screen media.

I need help with a heavy subject.
How do you properly roleplay a rape victim?

Short version, been playing as a female character for the past year & 1/2, and last session she got nightmare raped by Big Bad Evil Bitch and spawned a nightmare creature in the dream right afterward. This is kind of a weird situation (and not for the normal reason), because the past few months this character has just been tying up loose ends, not really having much of a reason to square off with the BBEB. Then that happened, and now she has a new motivation to kill her.

But the thing I keep asking myself is, "how would she act/what would she do after having that happen to her?" I've done a bit of research on the matter, come to some decisions on what she would do, but I'm still not sure. This is the first time in a while I've thought about the campaign outside of a session.

I have a new health system brewing, does someone care to comment?

The idea is to have three separate damage bars for Physical, Social and Mental damage, and then have one health bar.

The idea is that when someone attacks successfully, the opponent receives X damage, where X is something like 1 for small weapons, 2 for medium weapons, 3 for heavy weapons. On non-physical health types, the damage depends solely on the roll, unless they use magic.

These damage bars (I'm probably gonna just make them like pic related) are cycling, meaning they fill up again and again. When your damage bar is filled, the opponent gives you nasty status effects.
>Physical: Wound, Disarm, Trip
>Social: Anger, Confusion, Aggravation
>Mental: Depressed, Disheartened, Afraid

If you rack up wounds, you start rolling to stay conscious, and then to not die.

The design idea behind this was to make combat something where you can engage in multiple ways, such as making your opponent angry to have them make mistakes, rather than just applying a metal bar until death.

Please could you pass the following on to the design team:

A Rebalance of Power:

While I do not want Chaos Space Marines to perfectly mirror Space Marines, I do think that there is a desperate need to tweak CSM in order to claw them back to parity. What must be remembered is first and foremost is that CSM are after all Space Marines, the majority survivors from the Horus Heresy era. Therefore they should have rules and options to better reflect this.

Here are some steps that will go a long way towards achieving this goal:
Artificer Armour/Flesh Metal Armour: CSM have been fighting since the Horus Heresy, surely they would have kept all suits of Artificer Armour that they had as highly prized items similar to Terminator Armour. All Characters, including Sgt types should have access to this or Flesh metal armour as an option.

Chaos Raptors: Similar to Chaos Bikers if your warlord takes the option of a jump pack then Chaos Raptors should become troops.

Chaos Terminators: Similar to Chaos Bikers if your warlord takes the option of Terminator Armour then Chaos Terminators should become troops.

Special Weapons: the rules for special weapons in squads currently state 1 per squad, unless the squad is 10 or more when they can take a second. This should be tweaked to be 1 in 5 for all squad types. Grav Weapons should remain unique to the loyalists.

Drop Pods: I'm not 100% convinced with these as an option but they do feature in the novels as being available to CSM warbands. Surely if they where to feature then a premium must be paid, for example increase the points cost to 50 per pod. I'd envisage these being available for all units that can take a Rhino as a dedicated transport.

I'm a CSM fag and even I think this is pretty lame. He is literally asking for them to mirror SM, in addition to shit SM don't get like Assault Marine or Termie troops. Its just silly.

The way to make CSM good is to make their unique options more efficient for their points and to make getting to close combat less of a chore.

what features should a team oriented roleplaying videogame should be?

i was thinking in having the 4 basic classes: Fighter, Wizard ,Rogue and Cleric

and have 4 players clear a dungeon, but i was thinking that this is just making another diablo like game, if there are only monsters and the game is balanced around combat, it will be not different from any other games

Making more specific roles for each class, like there is a locked door that only the rogues can open, they will have to team work to complete the dungeon fast, but i can think other feature from the other classes that arent only killing things or stuff like that

could you help me /tg/?

Diablo does not have clerics, so that's one problem right there. Even if you insist on a 4 player composition, you could have only three categories, but allow 2-3 splits for each class.

For example, warriors can go barbarian or knight, thieves could go assassin or archer, wizard could go battlemage or some kind of debuffy status type caster.

Whether or not you include a support type caster like the cleric, a good way to enforce mandatory cooperation is to provide buffs from each class. Warriors can lead their party with powerful combat boosts, for example. Also require traps that take 3 or more people to solve or bypass, or enemy boss mechanics that require all players to do a job.
