I hate it that in D&D fights feel so inconsequential. They happen very often, but even if they're potentially deadly all you have to do after the fight is over is to cast a bunch of cure wounds spells and you're good to go.
Do you know systems where fighting is a big deal, something that happens rarely but is really engaging? Or maybe you've "fixed" it in D&D?

Requesting my 5e Tiefling Warlock, Orilia The Curious. Although, while drawing, probably easier to just default to thinking Rogue instead, because she looks pretty much like one, save for her magical eyes.

She looks like the lass on the bottom left, wearing classic rogue garb, and carrying a hefty and cursed-looking crossbow. It's a heavy crossbow that she can summon from the abyss, and it has an overall fleshy appearance and a hefty crank on the top or side.

The most striking thing about the crossbow is that it's front has a "mouth" out of which comes some short, red tendrils. The tendrils should crawl aside the crossbow's front.

She herself is mentally scarred, and her look and demeanor could reflect that. Especially her eyes should look odd or magical, because she has peered into eldritch abyss and gained magical sight because of it.

Pose free, as long as the creepy-crawlies on the crossbow's front can be seen.

Also requesting review.

Requesting a veteran of the early Indian wars

He wears the clothes and has the rifle of the top left, with the saber and dagger at his side. He wears a helmet like the top right, and a padded coil that conceals his face, sans eyes. He has two bags like the bottom right on his persons. His gear and clothes should be somewhat ragged, but repaired/mended to be in fully functioning condition. He could also have buckskin gloves, but that's up to you.

Thanks

I think it was Odin that was described as running around with a big hat. Tolkien took this for his wizards and then, like so many things with Tolkien, it spread to other fantasy works. I think witch hats look different because it just looks better on a girl that way.

Let's just never discuss "HFY" ever again.

I got introduced to D&D via 4e. I recall the DM hating it. After a year I eventually went over to Pathfinder, but I kind of miss something about it.

Is 4e at all redeemable, and if it is how would you play it?

I loved 4e, perhaps my favorite version. So many character options. So much minmaxing
>>
>>51132654
4e's biggest problem was enemy HP inflation. Later monster manuals corrected this which made a huge improvement, but a second minor nerf at higher levels helps as well.
>>
>>51132654
most of 4es problems were easy to work around (monster hp bloat, etc etc) but the biggest problem it had was how hard it was on DMs during epic levels. Keeping up with that much shit and playing monsters AND doing what they can to make it so some epic destinies don't destroy the game is a real challenge. The only thing you need to make 4e "redeemable" is a DM to work with you.

Anons release first version of a rehauled rulebook

Song of Swords is a a tabletop RPG centered around realistic medieval fightan' with a ludicrous variety of weapons and fighting styles, centered around a dice pool system. It's currently in beta, and can be used for both fantasy and historical games.

Call of the Void: Ballad of the Laser Whales is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.

As posted in the last thread:
Due to a level of discontent with regards to the quality of the rulebook, I and another anon undertook the task of rehauling the layout of the PDF and typesetting it in LaTeX. This has allowed us to easily make every reference to a certain mechanic, maneuver, talent or similar element actually be clickable and link to the element in question. No more Ctrl+F to find out what the "Coup de Grace" maneuver does when figuring out how bad a Weak Spot is, simply clicking the text should take you right to it.

Currently, a lot of these hotlinks are missing, but they'll be added within too long, the delay mostly being real life obligations.

Updated versions along with source code can be found on https://github.com/progamanon/latexed-SOS

You can also help us out big time by leaving comments on https://pad.riseup.net/p/Song-of-Swords
It doesn't have to be technical, style preferences or questions as to what is possible or even just words of encouragement (or discouragement since I subsist entirely on a diet of self-loathing) are greatly appreciated and requested

>>51071375
Did you mean, with the box, actual lines or simply a color for the whole row? The former is frowned upon due to making the table as a whole less legible and sort of ugly, but the latter might be a good idea, though I personally think it looks cleaner simply coloring the font.

I'm submitting some ways it could look, pic related.

As for the font of the numbers, I agree with regards to tables, I simply wasn't sure why the text figures/oldstyle numerals were there in the first place, as they came with the template I shamelessly stole (and of which there is little trace apart from the header/footer due to my customization).

I figured it out though, and have made it so all tables use lining figures, while retaining text figures for body text.
>>
>>51073705
Coloring the whole row (the first example in the image you posted) looks much better and is easier to identify while being easy to read.
>>
>>51073952
This may simply be a disagreement of aesthetics, but I don't see how the first table is better in any sense.

It's eye-catching, sure, but the other word for that, when you're not looking for it, is "distracting".

It creates a similar aesthetic to boxing the whole thing in, except now it's just one row instead of the whole table, making it look ugly.

Additionally, consider the usual process of using the tables:

0: From the Hit Locations, you click onto the location in question.
1: You want to find the relevant table for your damage type as the first thing you do, as you can't do anything before having a table. Thus, you want this information to be the first thing that is spotted when glancing over the tables.
A red row competes for attention, but that could be okay if it's important, but let's move on:
2: Find the level of the wound
Here, you scan the left side of the table and then move to the right, identifying the values in question, which you'll quickly know is "Go to Graveyard. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200" when the colored font, or colored box, shows.

The red box allows you to complete 2. faster, but when you've only got the five identical elements (Level [0-5]), just about any out-standing attribute will, well, stand out. The red box seems like it's less aesthetic and less functional.

Yes, it's more eye-catching, but you don't want it to catch your eye more than the more important elements. It feels cluttered.

I'd like to hear your arguments regardless, though, since I'm not entirely opposed to using the colored row. The bright-red text is a bit gaudy, and the dark red is too subtle to be quickly scanned, so I'd change the color at least, even if I didn't go with the box, but you may have a better idea entirely.

Traveller is a classic science fiction system first released in 1976. In its original release it was a general purpose SF system, but a setting was soon developed called The Third Imperium, based on classic space opera tropes of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, with a slight noir tint.
Though it can support a wide range of game types, the classic campaign involves a group of retired veterans tooling around in a spaceship, taking whatever jobs they can find in a desperate bid to stay in business, a la Firefly or Cowboy Bebop.

We got new stuff in the Library Data Archives this week:

Challenge Magazine issues #36-78

An updated PDF of Mercator, which fixes some minor OCR problems with this ancient Mediterranean age of sail game

Plans and images for a 200 ton Yacht, the Prosperity class

An explication and structuring of Classic Traveller's task resolution, called Rule 68A

An extracted pdf of the Robots article from JTAS, which provides a rules-light alternative to CT's Book 8 Robots (with its crunchy basis in Striker)

A fanmade in-universe brochure for Mertactor Starlines, which travels the remote frontier of District 268 sector

A look at uniforms of the third imperium's various branches

And a spate of houserules for Classic Traveller:

Abstract Space Combat
Belting 101
Enhanced Chargen
Expanded Tech Tables
Ironmongery IMTU (Equipment and tech levels)
LBB2 Expanded (Space Combat)
Ship Encounter Tables
Travelling Light (Task resolution)
Vehicles: Design and Operation
+ additions for above

All can be found in the new Incoming folder, as well as filed away elsewhere.
>>
Things I'm looking for include:

High Guard v1, 1979 printing

Judges Guild books:
JG89 Starships & Spacecraft
JG360 Laser Tank
JG520 Navigator's Starcharts

Challenge Magazine issues 33, 34
Space Gamer issues 9, 10, 11, 12, 80

Houserules PDFs that archive.org didn't have:
Factor career (Sigg Oddra)
Revised Psionics Rules (Omer Golan)
>>
Of the stuff I've picked up over the past two weeks, I gotta say the Rule 68A thing is the most interesting to me.
Everybody knows Classic Traveller doesn't have a task resolution system built in, and relies on referees to devise rolls on-the-fly. Except that's not exactly true. It has a system of sorts, just not a very structured one. See this passage tucked away in The Traveller Adventure.

It reminds me a tiny little bit of the inuit golem.

In inuit forlkore a black mage can create a golem or homuculus out of dead animals and plants. He then pays the creature for his services with his semen.
The service is, in most cases, to kill someone.
The creature will then follow this order relentlessly.
However, should the target be an equally or even more powerful black mage, it can be turned against it's original creator.

Uh..
This seems like something a that guy gm would think of, but it's interesting nonetheless. I loved the lore in this movie, felt like an actual mythological creature and not just a random horror movie monster. The wendigo thread reminded me of this, but the question was too off topic for it

Maybe in someone's magical realm, but that's not a place I want to be and I would not use this thing in any of my campaigns.

It just came to mind as a supernatural creature that relentlessly follows people to kill them while also having a sexual aspect to it.
